Škoda Octavia Ignition Lock Replacement

Today we replace the lock on this Škoda Octavia! This was a first for me and sadly one crucial part of the job which is removing the lock from the steering lock mechanism was corrupted. You can achieve removing the lock by using a piece of stiff piano wire or similar and if you can get the key to the second position then there is a small hole you need to push the wire through in order to release the clip to let the lock slide out! Hopefully the rest of the information shown is useful! If you buy a lock from the dealer which is relatively inexpensive then you can use the old key and no programming needs to be done!

Huge thank you for sharing your knowledge on this. I changed over the steering lock mechanism on my partners Octavia for a new Febi one. Managed to get everything back together without any broken plastics! I simply couldn't have done this job without your help ! Cheers!

Thanks for your video, I've managed to save £600+ from the local Skoda Garage. I've struggled to find anybody to do the job so decided to tackle it myself. I discovered on my 2011 Skoda Octavia that I could access the bolts without removing the steering wheel which was a great help.

I mean I’d you’re already that far into stripping it down to steal it they aren’t really much of a deterrent anyway! 😂

This is a very common issue on Mk5/Mk6 Golf. I had one in where the key was stiff to turn, & would sometimes get stuck & couldn't be removed. Went & got a steering lock from a scrap yard & it was sticky too. Found some very helpful videos on KZfaq. Managed to undo the security bolts with a sharp punch & hammer. Fortunately didn't have to take steeing wheel off. A paper clip is handy to release the key barrel from the steering lock. There is a great video which shows you how to strip the steering lock down. What causes it to stick is a tiny piece of broken metal. Remove the little piece & build it back up. It works perfect. No stickiness, no new parts.

That’s a fantastic comment maybe you could put the link to the video of stripping down the column lock so others can find it easily! The issue with mine was the lock itself had broken and with the return spring and the plastic variably tab the lock wouldn’t have worked properly hence the need for a new lock

Hi Max and thanks for your time.I have the same trouble with my K11 .I cannot remove the Key from the lock.I am trying to get parts because the steering lock does not work either,I have seen people file the inside of the barrel with a needle file .Seems a bit risky since if it breaks in the lock!Have you known any one whose had this problem with a K11? I’ve had good luck spraying some dry ptfe lubricant into them and it seems to work a treat for me but saying that k11s are known for faulty ignition switches

Thanks for a great vid - about to start on the same job on my partners Octavia. Did you buy a breakers yard barrel, new OE, or dealer and why that choice thanks. Also because you only changed the barrel, the Immo is not affected and you can just swap new key into existing fob right?

Yea only the barrel, unless you change the RFID chip in the key everything will work as normal. I purchased one from main dealer because it works with the original key!
