Kodi's RECENT Vet Visit

Kodi was SUCH a GOOD BOY at his most recent vet visit for a check-up and vaccines. (A fun drinking game is you have to take a shot every time I say, "good boy" haha.) The only problem that arose was that he needs a tooth removed and a dental cleaning. The bill for that was quoted at over $2,000! Does that seem a bit high to you? It seems a bit high to me. I mean, of course, my fur babies are worth every penny, but I think I'm going to get a second opinion and quote before I move forward with this current vet. And of course, cats going under general anesthesia are at greater risk so I'm still tentative unless it's absolutely necessary. What do you think?
They gave me some sedatives to give Shorty before I bring her in next. She turns into Satan at the vet and last time I brought her in they had to strap her in this terrible contraption in the back room and they still couldn't even complete the oral exam. My partner says because she's healthy that we shouldn't even bother bringing her into the vet because the stress really seems too much for her. And we've heard stories of cats literally dying from the stress so while I want to give her the best care, I'm really worried about bringing her in for a check-up. What do you think? Do you have any similar stories you could share?

full physical including sedation (wild, the second he sees the scrubs), urinalysis and blood tests, nail trim, tooth extraction, and dental cleaning: $450 USD, and this was at a norfolk, va feline specialty clinic. shop around--$2k is outrageous.

We had a Kitty like Shorty, the solution? Have the vet come to your home. Much less stress! Of course for some procedures you do have to go in, then a sedative is necessary. Yes, do get a second opinion for Kodi. Do they have pet health insurance in America? As cats get older it starts to be worth it. Lots of love to you and Sho+Ko!!

I would definitely get a second opinion for the dental work. My last cat had to have teeth cleanings twice, and even with three teeth removed, it never cost me over $300. They do have to sedate, and my vet always said, only do the cleanings if necessary; she showed me how to clean his teeth at home, and I would do that every couple of weeks. I’d always give him a special dinner afterward, so he knew if he was good, he’d get a treat. I had to put him down almost 9 years ago. Now I have two special needs cats that I rescued last year, and since I got them before they turned a year, I’ve been doing daily brushings and weekly teeth cleanings with them, just to get them used to it. The earlier you start it, the easier it is to get them used to the process.

I live in east Tennessee. $2000 is what a board certified dentist would probably charge here. A regular vet would probably run you $400-800 depending on blood work and dental radiographs.

It is good to have your cat get checked by a vet regulary because they are masters at hiding any sign of being sick, but if your cat gets really stressed out by going to the vet it's hard to put your furbaby through that. maybe trying the meds you got to see if they help. If it doesn't do as your partner suggested, and only let Shorty see the vet when she seems under the weather.

I had a gorgeous tuxedo kitty that Kodi reminds me of so much - same "everybody's my friend" temperament. Dillon (my tuxedo) required dental cleanings at least annually, as he was prone to gingivitus. Consider he's at the Rainbow Bridge NOW - but in 2004-2005 I paid $200-$250 for a thorough tooth cleaning (no extractions), so would say $2000 is EXTREMELY HIGH! Get a second opinion - Also, when a cat gets anesthesia for dental work, they get put under FAR deeper than even for a spay. Dillon didn't fully wake up for 3 entire days - Was frightening to watch my normally super agile cat stumbling around & falling down while trying to WALK for 3 full days after having his teeth cleaned. A Vet Tech friend of mine gave me an inside tip that I will now pass along to you. When he goes to have his teeth cleaned, TELL THEM that you would like him to have a "flush" when his cleaning is over. They don't have this on the menu of options, but will gladly do it, if you specifically ask for it. A "flush" is when they push a large quantity of pure saline thru the cat's IV, which pushes a LOT of the residual anesthesia out of his body. This gives Kodi less to recover from, see? It worked like magic for Dillon - he was back to his normal self by nighttime on the day he had a cleaning, once I started asking for the "flush". They will charge you extra for the flush, usually around $20, but it's well worth it!

We're American expats living here now in Singapore. We rescued two kittens from the street in 2006 , but when they took two days to recover from the anesthesia after being spayed, we stopped taking the cats for regular check-ups. The surviving cat is now ten years old. Another street cat adopted us, and we kept food and water bowls and a sleeping basket outside out house since she's not used to living indoors. She was only taken to the vet once when she had a tooth problem and it cost us only US$200. We cared for her for ten years, and she got run over by a car when she was 12 since she was already moving too slowly by that time. We had rescued a total of seven cats, and except for the neutering and spaying, we don't take them for regular vaccinations. Our eldest cat has kidney problems, and except for the daily subdermal infusions, she doesn't eat special food, and it's been almost two years now since her treatment started. I hope that you'll find a solution. I love your cats. FYI: I found vet fees here are much lower than in the US, even human medical fees. Quality of service is not lower either.

$2000 sounds very high to me. My cat had a cleaning and 2 molars removed about 5 years ago and it cost me just under $500 CAD, including the medication he needed to take for awhile afterwards. I remember reading on your blog awhile ago that you're in the GTA; I am, as well, and if you don't mind a bit of a drive I could PM you my vet's contact info for a second opinion :)

Yes, that dental cleaning plus extraction quote is outrageous. Definitely get a second opinion. As far as getting Shorty's checkup, I would look into a vet that makes house visits. It will cost more for the house call, but if she hasn't been examined in a long time, it may be worth it so that she can be comfortable in her own surroundings and you can avoid having to sedate her. Big hugs and kisses to Kodi and Shorty!!

Awww, Kodi is such a good boy. My cat was nicknamed Demon Kitty for a very good reason, lol. When she went the the vet they had to use protective gloves to handle her, & she was so loud when they took her in the back of the office that she could be heard outside!! I miss her so much, it has been about 18 months since I had to say goodbye to her at the age of almost 23. She was a beautiful blue point Siamese & we had had her since she was 6 weeks old.

My cat has gingivitis as well, her quote for teeth cleaning and tooth removal was over 5,000, in fact that vet wanted to remove most of her teeth! So I got a second opinion at another vet. Free yearly teeth cleaning at this vet I went too and I told them that if they absolutely needed to remove teeth to call me beforehand. They wound up not needing to remove any teeth and if I remember correctly a tooth removal would have been like 100-250 with them. I not only love the price of this vet but I love the care, I make monthly payments with them for vet services like "pet insurance". I would definitely get a second opinion. Shorty will be fine with a sedative, never miss an appointment when your cat seems healthy. Cats hide illnesses very well and my cat even went in to the vet one time for a regular checkup, seemed fine but she had huge crystals in her urine (like kidney stones for cats) and almost had to have surgery. They gave her painkillers to help with the pain and told me to watch her when she went to the bathroom to check for her passing stones. The vet probably gave you something like xanax or klonopine to calm shorty down and trust me it works for cats. The most it'll do to shorty is make her seem a little "drunk" and sleepy, possibly more affectionate as well. As for kodi being put under for the teeth cleaning, hell be a little groggy for a day or two after the cleaning but will return to normal. Nothing to worry about. Best of luck!

Our cat had the same teeth illness and he couldn’t handle the anesthesia, his heart was probably a bit weak, and we heard from another vet that if you get your cats / dogs anesthesia over and over again they just get weaker and weaker especially if they have some hidden illness too or are seniors, but all in all they will all get weaker from it at some point. It was obvious for both me and my husband that after every vet visit, he was just weaker and weaker. I tried to make my vet find another solution but they insisted that he had to have the teeth removed one by one. He also had to get surgery a couple of times because another cat attacked him, and he got some smaller infections from those attack and the anesthesia from those vet visits also took a piece of his strength. All in all he passed away about 1½ year after the first vet visit and it was not because of the dental disease. So my after thoughts of this long horrible process with our old cat is that I think it would have been wiser to let most of his teeth fall out on their own even though it hurts, but he suffered so long after every vet visit that I think that it was much worse than the suffering from the tooth disease. I know that there are plant medicine for animals and homeopathical medicine for animals that can help with many mental and physical ailments and I if I get a cat again with that disease I will try and find something homeopathic to take the top of the pain and rub it on the tooth that is falling out. We spend an enormous amount of money and our cat just got worse it was very sad. I am not sharing this experience to frighten anyone I just hope that someone can use all of this to avoid all the stress and pain that our cat and we his parents went through!! Also as long as your other cat is healthy I think that the stress is too much for her, if she starts to give small signs of being sick then take her. But all in all both your cats are indoor cats and frequent vet visits should not be necessary!

Yes, I also heard a cat could die from stress, especially if they have an underlying condition. With that in mind, I had a male cat that was FIV+ and had a bad eye that needed meds to regulate the pressure in it due to an old injury. He was an older feral cat I adopted and had him neutered and vaccinated After that, he became so stressed during the car ride going to the vet he would pant and get so worked up he then collapsed at the vet. They had to give him oxygen, I was hysterical, so....the only time I ever took him back to the vet was when he was dying and needed to be put to sleep. He was suffering and had trouble breathing....they gave him oxygen and he relaxed before he was euthanized. It was one of the worst things I have ever been thru in my life and I'm 70 years old. Having a pet you truly love be so scared and upset is heartbreaking. There are vets that will come to your house, maybe you could look into that. Best of luck.❤

I'd recommend getting a second opinion if you're worried about the price, but what the vet is saying about teeth is what I've heard from multiple other vets. He'll have healthier teeth longer if you keep his teeth in good shape, but I'd suggest trying to see if he'll tolerate a kitty toothbrush for longer-term care. Animal dental is very expensive, it does seem surprising because of how small teeth are. My cat Pepper has Diabetes and a heart murmur, so most vets are hesitant to knock him out for dental. He lost 2 of his canines over the years since we adopted him. One just fell out and the other broke. They opted to let the remaining part of the tooth undergo the resorption process in the end. He wasn't in obvious pain or discomfort but cats and dogs can suffer from the same dental problems as humans. If you think anything going on in the cat's mouth might be uncomfortable or painful for you if you had the same issue, then the cat is likely feeling the same. If cost is an issue then monitor the cat's behavior, and ask other vets about cost. Also check online with this vet for any reviews, if nothing negative and the quoted cost is average for your area, then I'd stick with this vet if you're otherwise comfortable there. As for regular checks, they recommend it but I've had cats live for 18 years growing up that almost never saw a vet. If you still want to keep the cat's vaccines up to date, then look up various ways to get the cat more comfortable in carriers/used to the carrier, and/or maybe find out how often the vaccines actually are needed and take the cat in then for checkups and vaccines

I’m a veterinary technician, been in the field 3.5 years as of now. In my experience, the price of dental cleanings and general surgeries are dependent on multiple factors, including the area you live, the size of the hospital, and the cost of pharmaceuticals. A big bulk of surgical costs are the drugs involved (anesthetics and analgesics are very pricey, as majority of them are controlled substances). Factor in dental x-rays and preanesthetic bloodwork (which are also expensive due to cost of equipment, but at most clinics these services are optional). About 1/4-1/3 the cost (at least at the clinics I’ve worked for) is the actual surgery/dental cleaning, and that cost is mostly covering the equipment used (Panasonic cleaners and polishers). Only some of it goes toward labor (ie pays the technician that does the job). If extractions are involved, the cost is greater due to equipment needed for the extraction and labor (pulling teeth is not easy - often teeth [especially premolars and molars, which have three roots] need to be sawed in half or in thirds before the gum will give up the root without causing too much trauma. As for Shorty needing sedation for vet visits, we often see fractious and feral cats at our clinic, and sedation DOES make things easier for everyone involved, including the cat. Anti-anxiety medication such as amitriptyline can greatly help Shorty to relax. I’ve used it for my own cats (at low dosage) for long car rides, especially when I was moving cross-country. It made things a lot easier and safer for them. As cats get older, regardless as to whether they’re fractious or not, we always recommend a physical exam a minimum of once a year. Annual bloodwork is also recommended, as this can help to catch early warning signs of underlying illnesses, such as kidney or liver disease, which become more prevalent as cats age. Catching these problems early allow for greater chance of effective treatment. The doctor can also do an abdominal palpation exam to check for tumors (although if Shorty truly is Satan spawn, as you mentioned, it may be worth it to completely anesthetize her with gas anesthesia). In my own opinion, which you can take or leave, I believe an hour or two of stress once or twice a year is worth several more years of life with your cherished pet.

I recommend getting the dental work done. I have the Banfield “wellness plan” for my cat. I get the second or third tier one. It includes the dental cleaning. It does cover extra dental stuff but everything extra is 20% off. The removing of the “absorption tooth” is probably the most costly part because they need to do x-rays as well with that. Anyways, I highly suggest you do the suggested dental work, maybe not at that place though if you can find a better local price. After that expensive visit, a yearly basic cleaning will maintain Kodi’s teeth. As you probably know, cats are notorious for not showing any signs or weakness or pain. He could very well be in a sizable amount of pain.

If you are concerned about Kodi being stressed at the vet, I’d totally recommend having a house call vet for general checkups! I recently started working for a house call veterinarian, and most of the kitties (some don’t love strangers lol) run right up to us and are much happier being at home. They can do vaccines and other general things in your home and it’s a lot less stress on both you and Kodi!

Aww what a good boy! I understand your dilemma regarding Shorty... I wonder what other people do bc even though she is healthy, it's always better to be safe than sorry :/ You never want to find out when it's too late, right?

My shih tzu had to have several teeth pulled and all cleaned and was less than $1,000 in NC. As far as stress, there are times when they need to go to the vet's, or you can have a mobile vet come to your home. Check that out. Either way, there are sedatives in pill form - by prescription or non-prescription - that you can get for her. My dog flips out going to the groomer. So you might check to see what the vet will recommend.

Honestly $2000 doesn't seem excessive for a dental cleaning and tooth extraction (I'm in southern California). I don't take my cats to the vet unless it's necessary - they are pretty calm like Kodi but I know it stresses them out. I have found that one of my cats' prescription kidney diet food is cheaper to buy online, plus it gets delivered to my house versus me having to go to the vet's office to pick it up. So glad both of your furry babies are happy and healthy.

My cat looks and behaves exactly like Kodi! Even the same black patch on their nose! He has dental problems too- plaque build up, gingivitis, and resorption. I've been told it's actually pretty common in cats and unless they show extreme discomfort and are salivating a lot there really isn't any point in doing dental work. I try to rub my cats teeth with a bit of gauze pads and that can help with the plaque but other than that he's had several teeth go through tooth resorption, stuck mostly to wet food for a bit, then when it stopped hurting he was back to treats and dry food with less wet food through out the day. Never had any dental work recommended unless we as the owners wanted it done.

My Heart fell to my feet when I seen 'last visit', UGGG!!! SO glad that's not the case and he's ok ♡ He did fantastic at the Vet visit, and your right he was a very good boy! Personally I respect Vet's and the schooling & training that they have gone through, but I think you should get a second opinion. That quote seemed very high. Trust I'm not being cheap, like you my Furbabies are Everything ♡ I've spent $$$ on chemotherapy for 2 of my dogs and one of my rescued feral cats. It's just being responsible guardians for our Furbabies. But definitely get the teeth addressed, because dental decay can lead to serious health problems. You want to make sure their healthy and taken care of but the stress from a Vet visit can really wreck havoc on everyone! To bad you couldn't get a home visit from a Vet, to help elevate the stress level. Wish your kitties and you the best of luck. Blessings ♡

A few weeks ago my moms cat in my care when my mom was on vacation started going nuts I got worried and took him to the vet and his teeth were in bad shape to the point he was in pain it was horrible I feared taking theme out but it needed to be done and a few days later being tube feed etc he started eating his normal food his normal water it was such a relief I was happy that he was gonna be ok

I would get a second opinion, for sure. When I took my cat in, she had tartar build up as well but the vet scraped it off from both sides during the check-up exam (for less than $100). As for the other dentistry, it'd be a good idea to get a second opinion before considering it. As for your issues with Shorty, I can relate. My previous cat (she passed away at the age of 19 back in 2014) hated vet visits. The last check-up I brought her in for went well until they tried to clip her nails. She freaked out so bad, she collapsed and had to be put on oxygen. (This was several years prior to her death.) I never took her back to the vet after that (as I no longer trusted the vet and didn't want to put her through a similar experience again). She was a complete indoor cat and never went outside so it really wasn't an issue especially given her age. Essentially, the older the cat, the more dangerous it is (don't let the vet take your cat away from you).

@JRBlatt 5 жыл бұрын
But if you noticed something not quite right with her, would you at least have a vet come to your house to check her out? There are mobile vets everywhere (maybe a little more expensive but she probably wouldn’t freak out if she was in her own familiar surroundings at home) Many health problems can surface as cats age. Please don’t ignore them because you think you’re doing her a favor by not ever taking her to the vet again. Most likely she can be treated at home with numerous geriatric health issues. Just because she’s older doesn’t mean you should ignore her health. Just avoid vaccines if she stays indoor.

Definitely shop around for Kodi's dental. I got my cat's cleaning/tooth pull done recently for about $400 (and that was the high end of the estimate range). Obviously you want a good exam to verify whether it's worth the risk of anesthesia, but their teeth do need care to avoid later risk of infection.

I just took my two cats to Banfield pet hospital (I am in Salt Lake City, Utah). They are attached to PetSmart and are everywhere in US so I changed to them as it would be easier to keep track of vet records when I move. They also have this really cool wellness plans so I put my 10~ yo KitKat (she's a rescue so her age is not exact) on the advanced care plan which costs me $31/ month (~$400 annual) and includes all her checkups, vaccinations, blood tests, urinalysis and even dental cleaning under anesthesia. I will suggest you this plan and $2000 is ridiculous (the highest quote I have heard is $500). Also, Nationwide has an insurance plan that includes dental cleaning and wellness. BTW, my KitKat is a black/white shorthair like Cody and was as peaceful as him at the vet while she's usually a 😈 at home! My other cat who's always a sweetheart with everyone turns into a a 😈 at vets. Hahaha! Cats are hilarious and you should definitely take Shorty to vet just to make sure she's alright. Cats are very good at hiding their pain and illness so even though Shorty might look healthy she might be hiding illness.

replying to your description. We had to take my 17 year old kitty at the vet to check up on a tumor that she had on her paw. She NEVER liked the vet and would turn into a wild lion that was tied up so that day, she bit me on my hand with all her strength (I knew she was just stressed so I didn't blame her of course) and a few days later she passed away at home (2017). So after reading your description, maybe the stress was just too much for her little old heart.

Definitely get a second opinion on the tooth thing, and I think with Shorty keep tranquilizers handy for any emergency visits, but if she seems healthy and eats okay, then, if 'it ain't broke, don't fix it' adage seems best! Good luck, your babies are so 'dorbs!

Dental health is so important for kitties and can help them live longer. Tooth resorption is very painful, but they're so good at hiding pain we never know about it! Does he drop dry food on the floor after picking it up to eat? That was the only sign I had of a bad tooth that needed extracting.
