From what I can see, KoFi is newer and smaller than Patreon. The $4.50 a month is 100% a growth strategy thing, meant to on board as many people as they can even if its at a lost at first. Then once they achieve market viability or a critical mass, they'll either jack the price up or change it completely. Uber and Doordash have done this before.

uh, 6mil creators on patreon....1mil on kofi. Patreon has been around since 2013. Ko-fi has been around since 2016. ...........
@noitibmar6 ай бұрын
I'd actually wager that since Ko-fi isn't funded by Venture Capital, they have no real reason to continually drive a profit for those huge investors. They're growing slowly and sustainably, whereas Patreon has a fiduciary responsibility to always have a greater profit. If they're not getting enough new creators and subs, they're forced to take more of the slice
@@noitibmar Ko-Fi had pre-seed funding, and may very well move to the VC route eventually. It also does charge 5% platform fees if you're not on gold, and gold costs $6-8 AFAIK from the info on their site. They avoid transaction costs by letting creators and consumers deal directly with the payment platforms, who then charge their own fees. Basically, pick your poison: be at the mercy of PayPal, Stripe, or Patreon. Many creators would prefer dealing with just Patreon and their terms of service rather than PayPal or Stripe's. With gold, I'm not certain that $8 will eventually be enough to sustain the cost of hosting their biggest creators on the platform as they grow. In some sense, the smaller gold creators and non-gold creators are subsidising the hosting costs for the biggest creators, which is kind of messed up. Overall though, another competitor in the space with a slightly different model is definitely good.

8% is about on par. The problem is credit cards compete for offering cashback rewards, which they charge directly to anyone who accepts them. It is super expensive to handle credit cards even if you assume 0 charge backs. If KoFi only charges $4.50 (per user? or per creator?) Than that is either over 5ish percent or they don't accept most credit cards. End of story, it is very common to see a 10% rate for handling the payment processing for you, depending on how much risk and work you want to do yourself you might half that you might even bring that down to about 2.5% if you don't get many high reward cards being used.

Transaction fees for credit cards are 3% for stripe, and similar for PayPal I believe. So it’s more like 8% vs 3% + $4.50 I think? I might be wrong about that though. Also Patreon has a name brand, so people might be more comfortable using it to support creators, and it might reduce friction for signups if they already have an account.
@Halosty456 ай бұрын
Patreon also uses stripe on top of their % cut so with currency conversion fees so this month I made about 87% of my actual number with the grandfathered in 5% base cut.
@compasscrafting11472 ай бұрын
You're correct to the best of my understanding (I work at a payments provider). Patreon wraps the costs, where it's PayPal's flat rate versus Stripe's fee (whether it's IC++ or blended rate). It appears Ko-Fi provides the platform for $4.50/month and you pay the processing fees of something like 3.5% + $0.30 per transaction. All in, Patreon is still a more expensive service. But when examining services for which you conduct business, you gotta look at any of the value adds included (tax services, reporting, external API integrations, whatever it may be).

I have a very small Patreon and I only get about 10-20$ a month. If I paid 4.50 a month that would be 25-50% rather than 8%
@someoldpersona9616 ай бұрын
The 5 dollar a month thing is only for some neat features, otherwise its 5 percent

Credit card companies and payment processors take 2-3% of every transaction… so sorry to say but Kofi’s model is not sustainable. And it’s ironic because a flat fee means that Kofi loses more money the more successful a creator is
@0oShwavyo06 ай бұрын
Is it really actually more expensive for KoFi to handle more transactions in a meaningful way? I imagine they are just passing the payment portion over to the Stripe API or something of this nature, so is there truly a sizeable marginal cost to each transaction or is it more just “money left on the table” compared to other pricing models?
@choilive6 ай бұрын
KoFi actually uses Stripe Connect, so its the creator pays the Stripe processing fees - KoFi Gold instead has a flat "platform" fee instead of a %. So Kofi doesnt get screwed by popular creator. Although I always thought patreon's 8% was quite reasonable, after transaction fees its only about 5%.
@5omebody6 ай бұрын
yeah... i highly doubt ko-fi hasn't thought about this. i know others have said "oh this is a trick to undercut everyone else to get a monopoly"... but you'd think they'd go completely fee-less if they wanted to _really_ attract everyone...

except kofi also takes like 5% each payment and isn't supported by some sites . and its practically certain that kofi will jack up their prices as soon as they get large enough

Patreon is just that much more popular. When someone hears Patreon they immediately think "subscription." When someone hears "Ko-Fi" they think "what's that?"

You know, it's a narcissistic trait common in psychopaths to believe they're above other people. Good job claiming the average person is too dumb to read for themselves, Dahmer.

At some point Ko-fi will increase that flat rate, go to a percentage or create a tiered system once they have a major customer base

Thank you so much for the recommendation. For a small content creator with a niche audience, this website is perfect for building up support for your channel as you grow. Your #shorts are killer by the way. I watch almost all of them. You give really good advice to young men. Appreciate you.
