Thanks for the videos. I have been changing my 20RESA engine oil all along, but thought it might be a good idea to change the spark plugs. I checked the gap and went change them and they are in very tight spots, especially the plug toward the back. Could you do a video on how to change the spark plugs? Thanks

How do you reset the weekly exercise function? I changed the oil for my in-laws and figured out how to reset the maintenance date and weekly exercise run. Father-in-law said it didn't run the test on the date and time I set it for.

I did not see your post till just now. Depending on the model of Kohler, its really easy or a pain in the neck changing the maintenance time/date. Look at the operation manual the dealer should have given you when you bought the generator and it will explain. One model has a button to press that "sets" the date/time by initiating a new test for the date and time you press the button. The other generators have to be accessed through the controller panel and if you are unable to work it out from the operation manual, you will be best served by having a dealer come out and change your oil for you and show you how to change the date and time.

how much oil does this generator hold how does the side cover come off you should have gotten a close up of the panel when you were doing the reset

When you change the oil, don't just dump the oil in. You cannot be sure how much oil is drained. If you overfill--you HAVE to remove the excess. I try to leave about a sixteenth to an eighth of an inch of the hash marks of the dipstick uncovered. Add one quart oil. Wait a minute, check the dip stick, add 3 or 4 more ounces. Run the engine for a minute. Let oil drain down a few minutes and then check dip stick again. Add a couple ounces at a time until you get close to full. I have another video on the capnbobretired channel that shows a close up of removing the end panel.

Anyone know how to check and change the spark plugs on this Kohler 20KV generator. Also how to reset the maintenance with video showing the steps. Thank you

Can you suggest an oil pump system like is shown in the video? Where do I buy one, and what hose adapter is needed to connect to the oil drain hose on this generator?
@capnbobretired2 жыл бұрын
Grainger used to sell them. If you do not have a Grainger store near you, they sell Grainger online. You could check Amazon also--they seem to have everything. They usually have a two directional pump, but as long as it sucks the oil from the crank case, its all you need if its just and on/off switch. It should come with the hose connectors you need for the job and a smaller hose stuck into it. If you are looking to use it ONLY for the generator, you might want to get a short piece of hose that fits OVER the hose not into it. If your hose is a little small for the drain hose, shove about a foot of it inside drain hose and it will be fine for sucking out and not leaking. The old Generacs had a fitting on the end of their hose. Kohlers do not. if there is no brass fitting on the end of the Generac drain hose, just find a hose that will insert in or over the pump drain hose, and insert in or over the drain hose from the generator. If you have a foot each of different hoses you can make up whatever connection size you need.

I change oil on generators all week long, so the fancy pants pump saves me a lot of time. Our friend gravity does allow us a chance to go inside get a cup of coffee and see what's posted on Facebook while we wait for it to drain the generator oil. Gravity works for free, but it does take a few minutes. If I do another video on other servicing for that compartment, I'll show removing the two phillips screws and lifting the panel off. It usually comes out ok. Most folks find a small challenge is slotting it correctly to align the screw holes for closing the compartment.

Hi Capnbobretired. I have a 20RESC, our electrician recently changed the oil. Cannot reset the Maintenance timer, either the method used in this video or the owners manual that suggesting holding the OFF and AUTO buttons together until "Time reset" is displayed. Release the 2 buttons and the timer is reset. Doesn't work, can't seem to figure this out.
@capnbobretired3 жыл бұрын
@@eleanorsnedden8944 On page 59 of your Kohler 20RESC operation manual it says-To reset the maintenance timer: 1) Press and hold OFF and AUTO buttons together until Maintenance Timer Reset is displayed. 2) Release OFF and Auto buttons. If this is not resetting check your engine plate to verify you have a 20RESC. Try again, releasing buttons at same time. If this does not change your settings, then call a dealer and ask to speak wiht someone in their service department.

Hi Capnbobretired. Definitely have the 20RESC generator per the metal plate inside the hood. I have an Error message now reading "Maintenance overdue" I cannot reset this with the OFF and AUTO buttons, that simply cycles the generator through the time, network, etc. components. No Reset Maintenance timer. I'll wait for Kohler to respond tomorrow

@@eleanorsnedden8944 From the overview menu, step down to the Genset Run Time menu. Prese the Select button and then step down to the Next Maintenance screen. Press Select button Press the up arrow button so that the “Reset Maint Timer? Yes” is displayed. Press the Select button. AFTER ABOUT TWO MINUTES, the new maintenance interval and date are displayed.

Do you know the part # for the oil and air filter? I am unable to find it in isolation, only a full maintenace kit.
@capnbobretired5 жыл бұрын
I buy OEM filters from a military surplus store that carries all sort of surplus parts. Since I change these all the times, I take spares with me and make sure the size and the threaded section are the same as the Kohler filters. Kohler maintains Distributors who sell parts, and support training for their dealers. Find the Kohler distributor in your area and buy a number of the oil filters so the shipping costs are less than buying the filters one at a time. Tell the distributor which model generator you have and he will know or look up the part number of the filter you need. You do not change the air filter on your car every 200 hours, so I would not recommend changing the air filter very often unless the air near your generator is dusty from frequent agricultural or industrial applications. Inspect it when you do maintenance and replace it if it starts to look dirty.

3600 rpm. 1 quart of oil. Electronic controls. 20 ~ 30 year lifespan?? I realize it's not designed for prime power, but with those design parameters, that would seem to be an extraordinarily optimistic lifespan prediction. I suppose it helps that the typical load presented by a house is 1/2 ~ 2 kW, if the A/C isn't running, and never reaches anywhere near 20 kW, even with multiple A/C units. I sure wish they'd build good 1800 rpm, liquid cooled, cast iron, four cylinder sets, that hold at least a gallon of oil, and with relay controls that are virtually impervious to the spikes caused by lighting strikes. My 1965 Kohler is built just so.

Not accurate for RESAL/RESCL model with DC2 controller. Also, oil filler cap is different for my RESAL 20.
@capnbobretired4 жыл бұрын
Yes. That is quite correct. The young lady is demonstrating how to change oil on a RES 20 like the title says. If you cannot figure out what oil filter and the differences between the units, I recommend you contact your dealer.

no, that's 5' from the house.

OK, you dont need a fancy pants pump to pull the oil out. Gravity is your friend. Wish that they showed how to get the battery compartment cover off and get at the oil line. That took a couple of head scratches because the first time its never easy as it looks..

TORNADO ALLEY TACTICAL Many people like to be prepared for power outages. One of the better solutions to power outages is a Kohler Automatic standby generator. All internal combustion engines require maintenance. You just watched an overview, that with the maintenance manual included with the generator, would show you how to do an oil change for a Kohler 20 RES, 20 RESA, or 20 RESL generator.
