This is a very helpful video. I don't know why Kohler doesn't include a one-page sheet with instructions like these in the operating manual. But, I'm glad you guys filled in that hole.

Do kohler stand by generators have a low oil shut off
@tedlewis79659 ай бұрын
In addition to turning the breaker off on the generator, some videos say to turn the main breaker off in the house or the transfer switch off. Does this need to be done?

What type oil is recommended?

what if power is back ON after checking the oil? Do I switch the circuit breaker ON or keep it OFF at that point now that power is restored? cannot find that answer ANYWHERE
@markgutierrez92952 ай бұрын
i would think you would always keep the circuit breaker on, that way if power goes out it automatically flows power back into the house. If power is back on, when you press the "auto" button, the generator should not start up. Also, there should be a transfer switch inside the house by the panel that senses if power is out and selects the source of power. If the circuit breaker is in the off position, if the generator starts up then when power goes out, you would have to walk out to the generator to switch the breaker on. Double check what I'm saying.

Can anyone help me with a problem with my Kholer Generator. I am getting no signal to the LP gas solenoid.. When I bypass it and apply 12 Volts to it, the generator starts up and runs great.. What is needed to solve this problem.. Thank you in advance

My problem is the dipstick. I can't tell the level. Thete is oil all over it even after wiping it off and reinserting.

You have to do it a few times, also hold it horizontal and rotate it.

@@Taras-Nabad Thank you. Did all that and still couldn't tell. Ended up overfilling it an now it won't start.

So during an outage you’re supposed to do this every 8 hours? I have been only check mine during annual maintenance.
@asuarezjd11 ай бұрын
It is common in small engines, especially 2 cycle ones. All engines consume and burn oil but your car has a bigger capacity and the engine does not overheat as much. Is a 3 minute thing, check and see if it needs a tad of oil to bring the level up. And, is good to rest it as they run and sound hysterical. No big deal, you have power and 20 minutes won't spoil the food in the fridge. I live in the north and is never as hot so it can be a bit forgiving but is good to check. No need to do it if the engine is not running of course! I do an annual maintenance which is pretty much check fluids and if the air filter is still good but running only 20 minutes a week, especially when 20 minutes is not long enough to "eat" so much oil. I hope you did not think you have to go out every 8 hours to check on normal days, LOL if the engine is not running then all the oil is there unless you unplugged it.

No@@asuarezjd I get it and makes total sense. For example, one time this year it ran for 2.5 days during ice storms.

What do you mean "1/2 hour rest time?" Are you saying when you check the oil, you are supposed to leave the generator off a full 30 minutes?

Didn't mention which oil to use...

Kohler 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil.

Having to check your oil every 8 hours defeats the purpose of having the generator. This is stupid.
@asuarezjd11 ай бұрын
Why is it stupid? your food won't spoil in the fridge for the short time you pause the power. So, you had power for 8 hours, did laundry, watched TV, your freezer and fridge keep the food cold and you can use wifi, but a PAUSE to check if the engine consumed oil (as all small engines do, especially 2 cycle ones) and replace a tad of oil to bring it back to a safe operating level defeats the purpose.....got it!
@mikejrexec24 күн бұрын
@@asuarezjdyes it is ridiculous. I'm going out in the storm every 8 hours to check on something that is running for days.

Yeah u glossed over that whole “30 min rest time” thing. assume these videos are for people who don’t work there. you may be leaving critical information out. Otherwise good video. Kohler said to turn off Genset and give it a few minutes before checking oil. You shut it off and pulled dipstick. I know it’s not real time, but these are details people are looking for.
