Kohler K301 Fuel Pump Restoration

The diaphragm in this fuel pump for the Kohler I am restoring is kinda hard to find new, so I tried to save it. Here is how I did it. I think it came out great.

Years ago there was a chap in pietermaritzburg that rebuilt diaphragms. Around 1980. He rubberised thin canvas and cooked it in a hot press. Vulcanised

That is definitely the thing to rebuild because of the age of the engine that fuel pump is so important to keep the classic Kohler k series engine up and running again

You were able to save this. The amount of corrosion in the fittings and you cleaned it up to working as it should. Great job.

I was worried for a moment that I would not be able to save it, the corrosion looked quite bad.

Evaporust works very good in an ultrasonic cleaner... I see Blackbeard use it often... Good video...

I like glass beads on rubber components. Your repair should last a good long while with the plating.

Nice restoration, though I have a few questions. 1 why bother with the pliers if you are getting it with your hands without gloves? And 2 no protection for the housing?

I tried the pliers first and with a few failed attempts I just used my hands. The solution did not affect the housing, I did a small test before I dunked it in.

I’m a bit ignorant on how this pump is actuated (as well as many other things). Is the pump lever pushed by the camshaft or something geared to the cam/crank shaft?

Always off the camshaft.

I know I've seen it but I couldn't say off the top of my head right now what it's called, but, there's some kinda goop you can buy to basically restore old, hardened rubber like in O-Rings and diaphragms, I'm sure I could find it if I kept searching but I wanna make this comment before I get distracted and forget lmao

Nothing restores rubber.

Its probably some kind of special silicone. But I have never seen something that can save rubber on the shelves.
