Water is warming up, we start feeding, you probably need a skimmer and it's the protein in the water which makes that orangy colour. Good video as always Andy.

Yup definitely need a skimmer. Liquid out of the food and fish waste I guess and treatments. I've angled my inlet so that there is movement on top of the water. That then makes the top of the water circulate straight in the skimmer.

Well you learn something new every day John who has a pond was on his way to work I asked how his pond was doing, fine he said just put some bacteria in, I said I purchased some last year I don’t think it’s worth the money, don’t buy it make it he said. I said how, from soil dig a hole in the garden 8” or so down then take the next 6” out and put in a bucket stair it up and leave when the soil has settled to the bottom take the top scum off and put that in your filter that’s natures bacteria and free. Downside he said for a week or two with air filters on you will get some scum on the pond this is the bacteria but it will disperse as the bacteria builds up in the filters.

I agree, could be pollen. It's that time of year here in the states, and from what I hear it's not unheard of for the bee's in the UK to bring pollen in as early as boxing day. You lucky folks

Some people seem to have the wrong idea of a pond skimmer it does not clean the water but takes rubbish off the top of the pond. To clean the water you need one that takes the water from the skimmer to your filter system or one where you can install filter wool in the skimmer the water going back into your pond. You can build a simple one a small square black pond plant basket cut 32mm hole in the base a kitchen sink waste pushed through the basket onto 32mm flexi pipe which runs down to small 1000 lph pond pump filter wool in the basket the pump will suck the water through the basket and back into the pond the filter wool will clean the water the basket collecting rubbish the basket can be fixed in any part of the pond.

I never cover my pond I just leave it natural I never have any problems and my pond has been getting foamy of a morning but it doesn’t seem to bother my fish I just use a fine net and remove it. like your channel always good to have a bit of comedy and learn something thumbs up 👍

The orange scum stuff is likely to be organic loading possibly from their food before and after it being ingested. Take care matey 👍🏼

Another bit of thinking on skimmers if you get a skimmer with holes in the ring these can be 3 to 5 depending on model they can bob out of the water due to air going through the holes to solve this try covering the holes one by one with a good sticky tape till it stays just under the water where it should be you then can take the tape off cut a black plastic bottle into little patches and solvent weld them over the holes or inner tube anything black that will stick 5am 1 hour left of my shift.

Mate the weather is crazy... been on the edge since I started my pond back up 2 weeks ago... just kept the feeding low once a day... until the weather heats up... apparently its supposed to be hot next week. no idea about the water film on top.. but you DEFFO need a skimmer... is there ANY WAY you can fit it into your wall ( drop the water level and cut the brick work )... ONLY have a floating skimmer as a last resort.. the plumbing/cabling will look nasty in your NICE clean finish pond. I think Oase do a free floating surface skimmer check it out. Hi. I treated my pond with PP about a week ago and I had the similar brown orange scum. Guess it's something that the PP distroyed. Anyway the home made skimmer got rid of it. In your previous video you treated the pond may be? Anyway love your humor😂 Cheers

look at your food and see if any of it has any red or orange colored bits in it also read the label look for artificial color or dyes

Skimmers are a good idea but think first some can cost almost £6 a week to run.

K1 washed and soaked in yeast for a week then dropped into your filter bay. I myself like watercress soaked in yeast and then put on top of fleece on the top of the first filter bay this seems to keep my pond in good condition with PH and ammonia. I could see no benefit in the Aqua stuff which I used last year.

Hint on adding bacteria: Check the expiration date. Also, green water can be your best friend. You as pond owner hate it but the fish love it (as long as it not too thick and taking away the oxygen). Green water indicates too many fish, overfeeding, insufficient filtration, and/or some other intervention such as over cleaning, medication treatment, etc. Taking away your obvious indicator can lead to more severe problems. I would limit food for a few days, add nitrifying bacteria, and add a dozen or so food supplement tablets of Folic Acid, 800 mg each tablet, every day until green water clears up. Faster bacteria growth, healthier bacteria, and longer lasting into the cold months, and faster bacteria growth coming out of winter. Just my humble opinion and 25 year experience.

Took my covers off today but its still cold over night even with the nice sunny days the ramp up of the filters is a bad time of the year for every Koi pond rush it and the water go's to pot and its never the same each year in the same pond just two things take it slow and water test twice a week it can go south real fast

Andy wat boards have you used around your filter frame I've done my frame now but not sure wat to use to cover it was thinking composit boards but think that could work out very expensive let me know wat you used m8 and was it expensive cheers
