Paddling kayaks and canoes offers the most cost effective way to get out on the water and target Kokanee. However, paddling presents its own unique set of challenges to overcome especially when targeting Kokanee at depth. In this video I target Kokanee from my ‪@OldTownCanoeKayak‬ Sportsman's Discovery 119 in late summer catch fish at 30-40' deep.

This is a really great video. I enjoy many of your videos, but I especially liked seeing a paddling while trolling video. I also find your Kokanee jigging video especially interesting. Not too many paddle trolling or Koke jigging videos to be found on the internet. Thanks for the cool content. Very informative.

My tip on 2 rod fishing in a paddle kayak- when you hook up, flip the rod with the fish the the other side before reeling it in.. That way when the kayak twists you won’t tangle the lines. That being said, you can only do this in deep lakes as your other rig will sink immediately

I have a cabelas advanced angler 120 that I put a down rigger on. It is a paddle kayak, but I’ve figured out how to still paddle while I’m taking care of business. It’s totally doable but I’m usually fishing over pretty deep water at flaming gorge and strawberry res so I just make sure I don’t have too much line out so I don’t get snagged on the bottom. Fish with two lines in the water all the time. Totally doable. Great vid! Thanks!!!

I just got my old town sportsman 120 pdl. And I love it. Took it up and got some salmon already. It's definitely an upgrade from my Lifetime tamarack angler. Paddling around for 3-7 hours makes your arms pretty sore. The worst part about paddling for kokanee is that you lose all your momentum while reeling in your fish, and then have to set up and get back up to speed. No other pole would also get tangled so I'd often have to reel in bot rods each time I caught a fish to make sure they weren't tangled.
@differentfins
@differentfins 2 жыл бұрын
I've had that exact kayak for 2 summers now and I still love it! The main reason why I got the pedal drive is so I could fish hands free and not lose momentum. We dont have Kokanee salmon where I live but I got a couple chinook salmon trolling with the Old Town in Lake Superior 3 days ago.

I use Okuma Cold Water low profile reels, and have put the clicker on and then adjust the spool tension (not the normal drag) so that it slowly release line when I'm moving at 1.5mph (on my pedal kayak, but same would work with paddle). Since the clicker is on, I can hear if it starts deploying too fast or stops, and adjust or pull line by hand, where without the clicker you're missing that audible cue. Works well when deploying droppers for me, maybe some of you too. :)
@spiltmilt

Yes I’ve done that too but I also think clickers are the voice of Satan. 👹

Using Offshore Tackle planer boards can help you fish two rods while paddling also because they hold your lines away from the boat and function like a float when you stop so your gear doesn't go to the bottom.
@spiltmilt
@spiltmilt 3 ай бұрын
To a point but you still have to let out enough line and lead to hit a target depth so it might work over extremely deep water but then you have to put up with unclipping the planer boards and you can't use as limber a rod.

That’s true, I don’t do it much because I have a boat and most of the time I have other guys fishing with me, but when I go alone I enjoy the kayak. I’ve also only done it when fish are in the top 30 ft or so, so I do have to use a lot of weight. I’ll run 20ft out to the sides and rarely farther than 60ft behind the board. It works very well under those circumstances, but getting the board off is when most fish are lost.
@ShenpaiWasTaken

I like turning on my clicker to deploy my gear! With enough weight (around 3 oz) it slowly auto deploys but also allows you to strip line out between paddle strokes as well. Those are some monster kokanee! When do they start spawning / when is the kokanee season over for you? I was talking with someone earlier who said the kokanee may be spawning earlier due to the heat; we were only catching relatively small kokanee.
@spiltmilt

Spawning time varies by lake and genetic strain. These will spawn in late Sept or October other lakes around go as early as August and as late as November.

I don't kayak in any raft because of the ski boats that give of the huge wave. I bass fish & have a bass boat & them ski boat shoot waves that go over the front end of my bass boat. So I can only imagine what it would feel in a yak! I would for maybe a smaller lake that wouldn't allow them ski boats. But I would for sure add stabilizers to my yak if I do purchase one.

Yeah the speed boats and wave runners can be annoying if not dangerous. Fortunately where I live in Canada we have more lakes than people so I am used to having a lake all to myself. I went out on Lake Superior 3 days ago and I fished 7 hours and didnt see another watercraft on the water the whole day! Cheers

I was planning to outfit my Old Town Stillwater 12 for Kokanee trolling when I found a screaming deal on a PDL kayak. I think a downrigger with weighted stacker rigs would be pretty doable while paddling. Downrigger could be deployed while paddling intermittently to stay on course, get some ground speed to establish your setback, then clip into the dropper rig and get back to trolling.
@spiltmilt
@spiltmilt 2 жыл бұрын
I bet you would lose a lot of fish on the downrigger line itself.
@adamsnyder9347
@adamsnyder9347 2 жыл бұрын
I thought about how to drop the gear, but not how to bring the fish back lol. Maybe initiate a turn toward the downrigger side so that hopefully you end up bringing the fish back over the other end of the boat.

Have you ever tried Dipsy Divers? They would work for trolling deep. Not sure how deep you fish for salmon but those divers pull down 30 feet or more and then release after a fish hits so there is no resistance.

Have you ever tried snagging kokanee, not sure if it's legal in Washington? A couple more weeks here in northwest Montana and the season opens, 20 limit. They are spawned out so it's just another way to utilize a resource. Great for smoking and canning and great fun, it's harder than it sounds to get them.
