Meruem and Komugi's story was very similar to a shakespearean tragedy if it didn't surpass it. Growing up reading and watching Romeo and Juliet didn't affect me nearly as much as their story has. The monster who became more humane than the humanity surrounding him and the girl who never knew her own worth until said monster showed how much he valued her. Only for them both to die due to forces outside of themselves. This broke me

It’s almost like over the centuries you can write stories which surpass the old ones. That doesn’t devalue the older stories, if anything it values them higher since the newer ones wouldn’t exist without them. But yes, in a vacuum Meruem and Komugi are MUCH more engaging than Romeo and Juliet

Her role in the story was both small and greatly important. She, while completely oblivious to it, brought forth the humanity in Meruem and changed him. Their scene at the end always hits hard. @@yeehaw7362 really interesting that you say that. I didn't think I'd ever really find someone who noticed that detail or voiced it. You're right. I saw it too. He led into his own later actions as average people do with their actions in the real world. He clearly scared the eagle off and set into motion its actions to lead into attacking komugi. It's the consequence of choice. He was set out to kill her, yet, he set in motion what would lead to his heart reacting before his mind could even understand. It compelled him until the end and thus, he died happy. He and komugi exercised choice until the end.

I think the moment stands out so much because beforehand he had so much conviction to kill her, but when he see's her getting hurt all of that conviction crumbles. There was zero hesitation in saving her, that eagle got 100 to 0 in a fraction of a second, and this came from the same guy who just decided to kill her.

komugi’s treatment by her family continues to make one question what truly defines being human, when the line between “man” and “monster” is so fine - not just in hxh, but in the real world as well. komugi taught meruem what it’s like to be truly “human”, and through his own growth, he was able to reciprocate her sentiments and free her from a life lived for a family of people who would never be more than monsters. people forget that komugi and meruem’s relationship is a two-way street, in which both individuals have things to offer and receive. this video was a great reminder of how beautiful their relationship is. your analysis is insightful as usual, thank you for the wonderful video!

Without even knowing it, Komugi saved the world. Meruem changed his whole outlook on life based on her, and the time he spent with her made him more and more human so that he saw all living beings had a value. This was more a father to daughter love, or two best friends who enjoy a similar activity, but it was so powerful that he wanted to protect her at all costs and to spend his last moments of life with her, just as she looked forward to each day with him doing what she enjoyed the most. At first I did not really enjoy HxH, but the Kimera arc was soo good it raised the whole series up to another level.

@@kigonkiganoaoa9848 idk if meter would've been able to beat meruem because it would've been u likely they could properly seperate the king from the Palace. I think worst case everyone part of this would've died because pitou would've merked gon and killua, pouf probably would be in the same situation, and pitou could've joined youpi and both of them would've immediately wiped shoot and knuckle. Zeno would've probably stayed cus his job was to seperate the King I'm not sure how much help he would've been to betero but once pitou and youpi joined the fight it would've been over regardless after that the rose would've nuked them and killed everyone standing at the selection. So komugi saved everyone at the Palace essentially which for the reader might as well have been the world.

The king might have been stronger if he didn't spend so much time with Komugi, but he wouldn't have been nearly as intelligent. Netero always had his ace in his pocket, as well. Not to mention, I believe in the following arc they state outright that there are a lot of people stronger than Meruem was, and considering it took an easily mass produced bomb to kill him, many methods that could have been used to dispose of him too.

Fun fact: Komugi (小麦 )is translated as 'wheat' in English. It has a spiritual symbolism all throughout history, it means love, charity and resurrection and also means prosperity. It is a staple grain of the ancient times and a shortage of wheat could mean famine and death. Perhaps Komugi is the 'wheat' of Meruem, his prosperity and his means of growth and subtly without telling it directly to us, is his love.

I must admit that when the Chimera Ant Arc first introduced Meruem, I was not impressed. He was a good terrifying villain, the type I have loved in other shows, but this was Hunter×Hunter, and the previous villains were so interesting and layered that to me he was at first a far too simplistic villain for the likes of this show. Then, enter Komugi. OMG, when I saw her enter the room, all I could think was: "OMG. She's blind! This is it! He's powerless against her!" Now, when I saw "powerless" I don't mean that in the traditional sense. Obviously, he is far more powerful than her. He could kill her as easily and with as little effort as swatting an annoying fly. What I meant by that was that in all of Meruem's previous opponents, he terrified them. He didn't have to necessarily act threatening towards them, his clearly non human appearance was more than enough to scare them shitless and throw them off of their games. But with Komugi being blind, Meruem lost that advantage. She can't see that he is not human. All she can hear is a very intelligent and human sounding voice. So to her he is simply another human. And as time went on she humanized Meruem, and the transformation the two of them underwent thanks to each other was just incredible. I full on sobbing ugly cried when they died in each others arms. The impact Komugi had on this arc is truly what makes it so great.

Komugi also seems like a weak little girl at first, but she's got icewater in her veins and tempered steel in her soul from facing death every time she played Gungi, while also being almost the polar opposite of Meruem: Humble and self effacing to his prideful and arrogant nature. It's truly a case of Opposites Attract, and arguably also a very subtle retelling of Beauty and the Beast.

05:17 keeping this in mind, if we take a look at the ED from chimera arc (Hyourri Ittai/ED 5), you notice that both Killua and Komugi are shown on the white side of the Gungi piece, while Gon and Meruem are on the black side. May just be overanalysing it though.

The Chimera Ant arc is just so layered and nuanced. She grew up in an environment that told her repeatedly that her life was worth nothing. Meruem, on the other hand, was constantly reminded that he was the pinnacle of existence, the most valuable being. Her nen awakens and it is only good for Gungi, nothing else. Meruem realises that. Her nen overwhelms her with all those greatest moves she could never have imagined before, not without having Meruem pushing her towards such high levels. He doesn't know what to make of all that. He can never beat her. Should he care? Brute force is stronger. Kill her then? No. Protect her. She is a worthy human being, more than she realises. He wants her by his side. In fact, for him she is the most valuable human being, because she is the only one who wants to know his name. She does not expect strength from him. He is worse than her at the game, and she does not look down on him. On the contrary, she appreciates him. She loved him more than anyone else, because he made her the best Gungi player that ever lived, he made her be her best self, he made her worthy, he valued her life. And he loved more than anyone else because she made him human. He realises how privileged humans are. They can be weak and still be loved beyond measure by those close to them.

I dunno, I both agree and disagree. I think at first she might have had some nen involved just because of the inherent relationship it has with any genius in the world of HxH, but I don't think she was actually using nen as a means of getting better at gungi until the moment Meruem sensed it awakening in her, and thus her ability up until that point wouldn't have been effected by a restriction. But that's just my take, haha.

Each human is capable of unique mastery in an infinite number of skills. That was something Merurem realized from Komugi. On the other hand, your own life is priceless and what you choose to do with that life should be of your own purpose and devotion. That was what Komugi realized from Meruem.

Komugi is a character that I underestimated in the beginning, but have grown so deeply fond of over the course of the arc. Thank you for this video and bringing me to the verge of tears with so many beautiful emotions. With all your HxH videos you really created a space of beauty on KZfaq that I find myself visiting again and again. There is a detail from the ending sequence I would like to touch upon briefly, in light of a quote by Hemingway. "The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry." As Meruem comes into the world he faces broken people, if not corrupt scared and fearful, broken if nothing else by the presence of a monster and the understanding that he outstrips them in every possible respect. In Komugi he finds someone who despite her obliviousness to her worth, and perhaps also because of the natural purity that underlies that kind of humility, is not broken in many other ways. She's the first person, being even, he encounters that is complete in something. Her purity bests him once in the matter of completely honest and humble resolve which he acknowledges in the scene where he rips off his own arm. The sense that there exists something that is better than him even if just in its small domain is pivotal to his development and sense of wonder and admiration for anything but himself in the world. Komugi embodies this in her small ways first there and then by beating him at Gungi. In the ending sequence, Meruem notes with a tone of loving admiration and almost relief that he never beat her, not even once. The first time I passed this scene I remember some people lamenting that he never won. But I think it's a beautiful detail, because it consummates that aspect of the relationship they had and just reaffirms the sense of wonder and admiration he developed for her. He started out thinking there was no one who could show him anything greater than himself, but the feeling that there is is sparked by Komugi and I think the humble relief in his tone reflects a kind of final happiness in knowing he was right in every way.

Maybe from people who basically watch Anime for power level fights, but she's essentially the biggest reasons the Humans plan worked. Pitou's En being cut off to heal the King, so Knov can place his ability. Komugi's presence in the palace puts Meruem at a disadvantage combat wise, since he does not want to hurt Komugi, playing into Netero's and the other Hunter's hope to spare any loss of life from the millions outside the palace. And the biggest difference in how she is the sole catalyst for emotional and mental growth for Meruem. As far as the Anime, I think they do an amazing job of not overstating her, to kind of match her own perspective and adjust and match her importance more as it grows for her and the Anime. The literal mention of her name is the final nail in the conflict.

I just wanted to tell you that I really appreciate your analysis, thinking about the philosophy of the characters is edifying, even if they are a fictional work they always reflect the psyche of the author, and since the author is human... they reflect a little of all of us, I am a great admirer of Togashi's works so I happened to write in the right video, anyway I have been following your videos for some time; I don't know if you do it just for fun or for other reasons, but analyzing characters is equivalent to analyzing ourselves, because this is what they are, a part of us. Not for nothing did the ancient Greeks frequent the theater, it was a form of catharsis, and the various characters in manga or cinema are the sublimation of the author's psyche. I guess I got bored with this string of words, I just wanted to point out that it is important to analyze these "parts of us sublimated on paper". Thank you (and sorry for the bad english) _Greetings_
