From 1950 to 1953, after the Korean War, Korea was the poorest country in the world. At that time, food ingredients were very scarce, so many dishes using ingredients from foreign countries were created, and Budae jjigae (Army base stew) is one of them. Budae jjigae, a stew dish made by boiling sausages, ham, cheese, baked beans, etc., leaked from the US military base stationed in Korea at the time, remains Korea's representative stew dish to this day due to its unexpectedly great flavor combination.
Budae jjigae tastes better when it is boiled easily and simply. You can add whatever sausages, ham, etc. you like, as well as instant ramyun, kimchi, and vegetables, to make it taste great. The basic sauce is very simple to make, but adding instant ramyun soup to it creates the perfect Budae jjigae.
These ingredients are used, but does it taste like this? It might be hard to believe, but give it a try. You will be truly amazed.
Budae jjigae should be eaten with rice and is best served with soju.
[Main ingredients: You can freely adjust the amount according to your taste]
150-200g Canned ham
2-3 regular Sausages, thinly sliced
2-3 Homemade sausages
200g Baked beans
1 Instant ramyun noodle
100g Rice cake
1/2 Tofu
[Vegetable ingredients: Please add vegetables of your choice]
Cabbage, approximately 100 g
1 Onion
Mushrooms
Appropriate amount of Enoki mushrooms
Green onion
[Budae jjigae seasoning]
1 Tbsp red pepper paste (Gochujang)
1 Tbsp red pepper powder (Gochugaru)
1 Tbsp soy sauce
2 Tbsp minced garlic
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp fish sauce
Ramyun soup base
1L of water
[how to make]
1. Arrange the main ingredients and vegetable ingredients in a large pot.
2. Make the Budae jjigae seasoning and add it.
3. Pour water and boil for about 10-15 minutes, then add ramyun.
4. Once the ramyun is fully cooked, you can eat it.
5. Enjoy!
[Cooking Tips]
1. Add your favorite sausage. The taste changes depending on the type of sausage or ham.
2. If you do not like spicy taste, it is better to add non-spicy ramyun.
3. If you like spicy food, add kimchi. It tastes better.
4. If the soup is salty or too spicy, add more water.
5. Budae jjigae is delicious even if it is roughly boiled. Enjoy the cooking process.
