I know you don't mean any disrespect but in case you haven't noticed by now, Korean people do not appreciate you keep using Japanese words to describe things. There is bitter history between Korea and Japan. Also, it is proper etiquette to try to use language of the country you are currently at rather than using other language to describe things..... much like you are naming things in German while in Israel.
@Steve-Owens

Thank you for your thoughts, here are mine. You are the second person to accuse me of disrespect for using "English words" in my content, so I guess I should address it and pin the comment. Firstly, I'm not sure that I would have the same problem using the German word Noodle or Lager in Israel, which are both German words which are commonly integrated into the English Language. A word such as Pizza (Italian) has been adopted into the English Language, as are the words Sushi, Ninja and Futon, they are no longer considered exclusively Japanese in the English Speaking world, we just Don't have other words, in English to describe such Items. Italy was companioned with Germany in the second world war, so try to imagine if when I travelled I couldn't use the word Pizza, or Pasta. Please remember, that there is bad history between the west and and Japan also but food nor language should not be a constant running sore in society, do you not agree? So Japanese words such as, Head Honcho, Futon, Ninja, Sudoko, Anime, Origami, Emoji and Sushi, how would you suggest I use them as they are now considered English words and we have no alternate names in our Language. I am considering using the suggested word "Master" which is a rubbish English alternative to describe a man wielding a knife wearing a bandana but I have to be honest and say I find it disturbing that a generation want to force the next younger generation to bear grudge against words, I do hope Kimchi or K-pop is not taboo in the neighbouring country. Lastly. Our governments are constantly committing atrocities the world over under the thin veil of patriotism and then forcing it's citizens to take responsibility for their wickedness, isn't it time we realised that and stopped persecuting good people for the crimes of the one percent..

@@Steve-Owens Steve, I'm going to take an alternative view here. You are a chef in your own right, no? Out of respect for the Koreans, it is incumbent upon you to know the names of their food..... if possible.
@Steve-Owens
@Steve-Owens 10 ай бұрын
What would you call Kimchi if you saw it in Europe? Also if you used a word from your own language to describe fermented vegetables, do you think a French, German or Danish person would be offended? As a Chef, I instinctively understand the process of most food making and can compare it to similar foods from around the world.. My knowledge is more likely to make me refer to food in Korea, to similar foods from my experience. If I knew nothing of food, I would more likely have no way to describe a food, does that make sense?

Since you enjoy hotteok so much, see if you can buy "hotteok mix" in any of the Korean supermarkets. They should be quite readily available. The box usually comes with yeast, hotteok flour, and the sugar cinnamon mix so that you can make them at home. Sometimes the supermarkets also sell the hotteuk press as well. If you can't find any, I found that I can use a pre-made pizza dough as an alternative, and make my own filling (sugar, cinnamon, nuts, seeds). The only downside is that the pizza dough is a bit saltier than the hotteok mix, but it's a very handy alternative.
@Steve-Owens

Great info, I'd probably prefer to make the dough as it's a lot better that pizza dough and can really effect the texture. Yes I have seen the box mix, they are all over but we don't have a place to bake here, unfortunately 😕 thank you 👍

I forgot you're a chef@@Steve-Owens! Yeah it's not so difficult to make at home. My mom used maggeolli instead of yeast to raise the dough -- this was fairly common back in the day. : )

If you a big fan of traditional markets in Korea, you should visit Cheongju-si where you can find one of the biggest traditional market in Korea called Cheongju Yukgeori Market. Cheongju-si is located in Chungcheongbuk-do and is not so far from Davegu si. 😊

@@Steve-OwensThere is a history of ninjas entering Korea, killing our queen. But we also understand you. It's just a common word in the world and You had no idea.

Ninja a word we use in English, like many foreign words adopted into our English Language such as Pizza, Karaoke, Ramen, Futon, Tycoon, these are words that are now 100% English with origins in other countries. Fruit Ninja, and Australian Game is meant to be fun, Fishcake Ninja is similarly referencing the technique. I stand by the Title, the world is so full of division and resentment, it's time hate wasn't the default setting.. See people and who they are today and judge them on their actions.. Just my thoughts. I will address your edited comment. If "a person" killed a Queens, he might have been a Ninja, Perhaps Japanese, from Fukuoka or Osaka, they might be a Royal, a pheasant, a fisherman an only child an eldest son. What are we to blame? All the Latter or that one bad person. Recent terrors have been committed in the name of religions, should we hate all from that group, or accept that there is rot in all groups but that does not mean all are bad.. I could talk of this in great depth but I haven't the will, if you can't see it, maybe you never will..

@@Steve-OwensI'm sorry we are being picky. But It's true that ninja and samurai make a negative impression in Korea. It was the samurai ninjas who actually killed the queen, not the regular army, they raided the palace at night. Even after taking away the country, they wore knives and threatened ordinary people. In addition to the early 20th century they invaded Korea in 1600 and cut off people's noses and ears to make mountains and commemorate them in Japan. They were warriors or pirates, and Korea was a country that revered philosophy literary history.. Now, Korea and Japan are doing well, but there are emotions that we can't forget on one side..😢

Japan was a political system dominated by warriors and they accepted Western culture early. Korea was a country that selected officials through the literature, history, and philosophy test, and tended to ignore the West, science, and the military. I'm sorry for saying this for too long. .
