One of my students recently went on a trip to Korea and had an opportunity to observe a taekwondo class. He took this video to share with the rest of the class.

True. But, It's a different way of training. They were doing those push-ups to warm-up, not to increase upper body strength. There is a difference.

jet0577 A practitioner of any martial art benefits from doing proper pushups. Pushups must be important or they wouldn't even be in a Taekwondo workout or warm up in the first place. The very fact that they are doing pushups is good enough reason to do them correctly instead of in a manner that does not even benefit you worth the time you spent doing them.

I'm just curious, if the people posting derogatory comments here are teachers of this art or just students? it doesn't seem to speak very highly of a teacher or master to speak that way to anyone. If you're right then you know you are and don't have to wright silly comments, good luck to all :D

As a legitimate TKD 5th dan and someone who has done extensive research on the roots, early development, and kwans that formed TKD I can can tell you with 100% certainty that the only thing unique about TKD is Olympic style fighting. The early kwan leaders where all Karate black belts. A few had done some cross training in Chuan Fa and Jidokwan was influenced greatly by boxing's methods (emphasis on fighting, NOT pretend fighting/poomsae). Watch a Shotokan kata and you will see.

we are using poomsae, self defense, one step sparring and board breaking techniques for grading. On top of that we learn Korean words (lower belt levels) and write essays senior belts) Tests are intense and solid. Grandmaster is Korean. There IS a difference.

@MarcusLow
@MarcusLow 11 жыл бұрын
No it is actually "trigger-response" training, or maybe you could call it "small range action-reaction" training. It trains the internal "flick" timer in your body and builds the "cold start to super fast" reaction that is fundamental to most asian martial arts. Western martial arts do not have this due to a focus on "winding up" or "draw back" before a strike. You should try doing it. The smaller the bounce range and the faster the tempo, the harder it will be.

This is exactly the point: the Poomsae (or the ITF Tuls) are the connection of Taekwondo with their past and history. Doesn't matter if it came from Karate or Taekkyon, or even some Kung Fu style (as i've heard - doesn't ask, i can't remember where). Wich means, that Poomsae are not for softies, but, for those who appreciate this Martial connection. Olympic Fight Style isn't a fight style. It's a game about touch the oponent with feet.

They are pretty. But look at Judo and Jiu Jitsu. Judo only does kata for dan grades and it is with a partner using movements found in competitive Judo. Jiu Jitsu is EXTREMELY deep and technical and there is no kata. My problem with poomsae is that some school use this is the sole method of grading people. Then you see black belts that can't do proper back kick, have no foot work/understanding of distance, cannot take a kick, and don't know how to truly hit someone.

A lot of these comments I'm reading is disgraceful. If any of you are martial artist then you would not be speaking about anyone else in the martial arts community like this. If you see something that is wrong with what is being done then say it with respect and be humble about it. There is absolutely no damn need to be talking about other martial artist in such a way. Yes the push ups were not the best but you don't tear them down because of it which I noticed is the most popular and just about the only thing that is being ridiculed. A lot of you in these comments need to work on your mental and spiritual development.

that's actually not true, breathing is necessary for more strength and power in technique. while yelling (kiai) is also beneficial it does about the same as normal breathing. so it's not as pertinent to what they are doing.

Sir, i guess you are misunderstanding me. I'm not saying that Poomsae or Hyung are effective at a real fight! (Gzuz! They are effective like dancing!) I'm sorry if you understood that. (I also guess that you can see my poor english.) But that your argument about that they are for "softies", this are invalid. I agree with that they are for promotion tests and show. But i have to say that they give more "depth" to a Martial Art/Sport that uses only one, or two, kicks.

I would have to disagree that patterns, breaking and one step are useless. I am from ITF. There is no Martial art without techniques...its all well and good to practice various techniques in a standing position...but then you can only perform techniques in a standing position..patterns are about developing muscles, techniques, body shifting etc etc etc. Nothing in training is useless. Even observing a class for an hour should be taken as good training time.

Punching from your hip, standing straight on, reaching to block strikes, etc are not applicable to a sport or street context. After 21 years of practice and usage in the ring and street, I am 100% confident in saying that poomsae are good only for show and acquiring a new dan grade.

Come on man.., try to do their push up and feel it...this kind of push up is different than a common push up. like RockeeterCody said. To be honest, if a tkd guy have a mindset of using tkd as a self defense, this kind of training is ineffective. I dont understand why ppl keep arguing about the weakness, and the strength of TKD. I personally see current TKD as a sport, just like soccer, basketball etc. U dont want to see ppl die in a pool of blood during Olympic Games, Do u?

A lot of these people do not know how to hold pads properly. The way they are holding them causes people to hurt their foot on the spine of the kicking paddle. Also a lot of these people have kind of sucky technique, but then they have really cool 720 spin kicks. I find that interesting. Also, their jab punches were utterly pathetic. but there were a few very good kicks I saw and that was nice.
@proconsulaugustus
@proconsulaugustus 9 жыл бұрын
lolz..these are the korean tigers...they aren't even trying. the guy doing the poomse in the middle was just memorizing, wasn't doing full power. The 540s, not 720s are not even being done with total commitment, it's relaxed target practice...and yes they are holding the pads right (stitches out)...and you shouldn't be able to hurt your heel on the spine of a kicking paddle because it's stitched leather. Only if you hit it straight on with roundhouse kick full power with the top of your foot, it hurts a little. Their technique is not sucky, it's technically extremely good and they're going 50%...sorry but you're basically wrong all around and don't have an eye for taekwondo. I take it by your profile picture that you're ATA or something because you have a black uniform, so no offense but I don't expect you to really know about WTF techiniques
@MaharlikaAWA
@MaharlikaAWA 9 жыл бұрын
proconsulaugustus No, they are not the Korean Tigers. And no they are not holding the pads correctly, and if you believe it is a matter of opinion, then okay, they are not holding them the most effective way for such kicking. You should never once hurt your heel on stitched leather when they hold them right. And even when I do my poomsae half speed or memorizing I have way better technique than that guy. He sucks. And you are an idiot if you think my picture is a black uniform or that I am ATA. I am Kukkiwon jackass. And proud of it. Don't you EVER associate me with the ATA!!! How dare you! Flying kicks mean nothing anyway! I know more about WTF techniques than you and your entire dojang probably do buy the way you are talking.
@MaharlikaAWA
