I’m half Korean trying to learn Korean. I once introduced myself to a bunch of native Koreans as 반 한국인. What i thought was “half Korean” was actually anti-Korean. It was extremely awkward afterward and it took so much time trying to fix the mistake.
@PaulCHa2 жыл бұрын
That’s hilarious. What’s the correct way to say it?
@user-rq7ky4tc3s2 жыл бұрын
@@PaulCHa well there is 혼혈 (honhyeol) which means mixed blood. But this word also may have negative connotations to mixed Koreans. So there’s no really good way to call half Koreans. I usually just say “half Korean ” in English.

5:10 For the “Caution Falling” sign, they were thinking of the verb 떨어지다 which means to fall from a high place. I always confused that verb with 넘어지다 which means to fall and stumble over. I think.

I think the “Prohibited Knock Smashing” sign was translated (relatively accurately, but not at all naturally) from Chinese, but then they translated the English “Prohibited Knock Smashing” way too semantically - the more idiomatic meaning of “smashing” as in “superb” or “fantastic”, hence the Korean “훌륭해”. Knocked me out nevertheless 😂

I'm a professional translator and we use computer programs to aid the translation process (it looks through thousands of previous translations to pull out sentences it sees as the same to help with uniformity) but sometimes it gives us such random translations, it's hilarious. Now, this is not specifically about Korean, but there actually have been cases where in place of translation was an automated out-of-office message from the translator.
