Yeah I find that the movies with relatable tasks to be the scariest. It's why I have a hard time watching The Grudge. Something crawling up through the covers to get me makes it hard for me to sleep at night.

The thing is it's based on a true story and according to Andrea Perron, one of the kids of Carolyn and Roger Perron, it's 10 times scarier to the real events. She wrote a book about her experience and she said that the movie was good but she also understood that they need to tone down the movie events because it was too terrifying.

I think psychological horror is scarier than fantasy horror. Like in regular horror movies, the moments before the reveal are the scariest. Once you know what the monster is it loses the ominous feeling at least for me.

the conjuring series is one of my favorite horror movies. all of them are based on true stories by famous demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. in the first conjuring movie they show pictures of the actual real life family that experienced the haunting. one of the daughter Andrea actually wrote a book about what happened in their house. she has stated that the movies were barely able to use any real experiences from the real haunting because it was way too graphic and way too dark.

During the second Conjuring movie, the one about the Enfield poltergeist, during the scene where the girls were in bed but one saw something in the corner by the door where it was all shadowy before the beds started going nuts, my freaking power went out right when it cut to the darkness and this glow in the dark skeleton piggy bank I had by my monitor was my only source of light. It scared me more than the movie, and yes, I screamed. Only time that has ever happened to me during a horror movie. Scared by a glow in the dark piggy bank. The shame. 😂

The only western horror movie that scares the crap out of me was the conjuring. Hereditary was okay. Disgustingly weird but not that scary. Asian horror movies are on a different in a different level. The makeup, the creepy sounds they do, the facial expression and having contortionists whenever someone gets possessed or died or whatever. Asian horror movies specially japanese, korean, thai and vietnamese top tier for me. 👌🏻

Out of all Asian horror Shutter was unforgettable for me, It’s been 15 years since I’ve watched it and I still vividly remember the freaking woman on his shoulder, that still haunts me to this day, every time my shoulder hurts I don’t want to look at the mirror. American horror never really phases me unless It’s “based on true story” especially Demonic ones. I’m a religious person and I do believe in God, angels and demons, had multiple stories about possession too. I literally can’t take watching horror movies about “demons” I can literally feel the heaviness spiritually wise. The Conjuring is memorable and unforgettable for me because me and my cousins encountered tons of paranormal while watching that in the middle of the day, take note, IN.THE.MIDDLE.OF.THE.DAY. Someone counting along the hide and clap scene (definitely not me and my cousins) 3 heavy knocks on my door but no one is there besides my grandma in the living room (you had to go past the living room to get to my room and you’ll see who’s going in) who doesn’t even stood up while watching tv in the living room (our sofa is just across my bedroom door) My grandma don’t do pranks, she’s too serious and too religious.

It's definitely something that's lost in a cultural divide. Western horror can scare me sometimes, eastern horror just doesn't for some reason. I don't find eastern portrayals of ghosts and spirits to be at all scary. That isn't to say I don't enjoy them in fact I like a lot of eastern horror films much more than the majority of western schlock, many of them build up the pressure masterfully. But I'm never really scared, vaguely creeped out sometimes but never left with that feeling of unseen fingers reaching out for me etc. that I get after a good scare from a western horror movie. It must come down to what we're taught to be afraid of and scared by through media.

See I prefer Korean horror films. I hate American horror. Oh I’m American. However I will admit this. I have 3 fears and 2 of those fears are from watching the original IT. It came out in 1990 and was on TV!! Not the theater. I’m ridiculously afraid of clowns and spiders and for the longest time didn’t know why. And I finally realized when the new ITs came out it was from watching the first one at the age of 10. It was not my first scary movie Friday the 13th was and to this day I never sleep in the center of the bed (IYKYK). But as an adult, all our movies have become the same. Demons, jumps scares, and Jigsaw. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’d give credit to the Grudge but that’s really a Japanese film.

Sorry... East horror movies are slow, predictable, and formulaic. No real subtext to the horror. Western horror has scarier 'monsters' because they tend to make them a bit more human or give them some distinctly human quality that sits in the back of your mind. We don't have 1 footed jumping vampires with hollow heads filled with swamp water. Or demon/ghost woman that pull their bodies in half to fly through the air dripping blood causing women to have still-born babies. Really weird stuff.
@jinyoungmysteria193
@jinyoungmysteria193 8 ай бұрын
I do agree with you about Eastern horror movies being slow, predictable, and formulaic, but the same can be said about western horror movies. However, Eastern horror movies has more to do with psychological horror, as it pertains to the spiritual beliefs and cultures of the East, rather than trying to jumpscare people, as what western horror movies generally tend to do (I'm looking at you, Hollywood).
