@@MikeRP3147 I feel ya.. but there's simply no market. You can pick these up super-cheap, all day long, on most auction site. The average 4-track CASSETTE recorder goes for 2-3x the price of an 8-track DIGITAL recorder.

Mixer issue not producer. A lot of instruments that aren’t bass have bass. Synths, pianos, acoustic guitars…a lot of non bass instruments have bass. Bass itself has treble information as well. So while it’s important to separate instruments for dynamics and tone control, it’s more important to cut frequencies from those instruments so they don’t clash with other instruments’ frequencies. Kick and bass should be neighbors but never sharing the same low end frequency. Bass is the hardest to do. That and true mastering. Mastering is harder 😊

I remember these Korg D1600s back in the day. A buddy of mine had one and had his friends would come over to his house and we'd have a studio session. Aftee a while, the machine became unreliable. I remember one night I was there and we were recording a song and all of a sudden, the D1600 would freeze up or shut down (I don't remember which one it was) before he could save anything and everything that was record was lost just like that! BTW, I love that "Mint Condition" joke. It's funny as heck!

I STILL have this one (i bought it when it came out).. its sitting in storage.. can't move on from it because it has a ton of old demos on it. Afterwards i upgraded to Korg's 32XD Digital Recorder, which was a monster back then. Way better build. The D1600 did the damn thang for me for a minute.. but it started wearing down after a few years. The transport buttons started giving me issues, and the LCD would fade sometimes (i think the bulb inside was trying to die out). After this and the Korg D32XD track i moved to FL Studio (at i think around version 7) when it was Fruity Lol. fuhk'd with that until version 11, and then got on Native Instruments Maschine, where i still am today.. i loved Korg's devices.. which was a big upgrade from where i started with the Tascam cassette 4 track.. But if you want to be portable those big dudes ain't going to do that. & i got tired of connecting Hardware to Hardware and more Hardware.. it takes of tons of space, and the cost adds up. AND YESSSSS, the sound quality gave me fits. i would do a beat, add vocals, sh!t sound nice playing through the headphones.. BUT, the recorded sound quality was lacking in a lot of areas. & when i would do a Mixdown to tape to carry it around with me the tempo of the recording would always get crazy. i love working with VSTs, and Expansions (even apps on my iPad, slay what was being used back in the day. & it's crazy cheaper). i can set up my laptop and controllers anywhere. and the Sound Quality is light years better. you can export as a Wav, MP3 anything.. and it's tight. What you hear when recording, is what you get when exporting.. But those Cassette, and Digital Recorders are where i came from.

7:20 All these things with DSUB outs… That’s this awesome Tascam DB25 standard where you get EIGHT balanced outputs (four stereo) and you just need the DB25-to-whatever adapter, but it’s the type of thing you could solder yourself. And there’s audio interfaces with it, and the PlayDifferently Model 1 has them. It’s legit nice, like a DJ can use a good analog mixer and just plug it in with one plug. And it’s balanced, so you can have noisy power supplies around it. But the big thing is that balanced lets you mix with a ton of headroom and lets you connect to crazy rack stuff like gates and compressors where you really need it. I think there’s a $50 Hosa cable that you could plug into the DSUB on one end and it has eight 1/4 TRS cables on the other end.

I’m just saying if you need it that DSUB connector is like 8 free DI boxes.

It’s so crazy to see the same multitrack problem on this machine also be the same main problem on the Korg Kronos/nautilus. No multi track option to send it to a daw but it can sort of make multi tracks onto a cd like described here. It’s crazy how little Korg evolved.

Yep, but the price of a PC that had enough performance for reliable audio recording was ridiculous for several years afterwards (at least it was here in Canada). Multi-channel audio interfaces cost a heap too. I just threw out a bunch of old music magazines and looking at those adverts we've truly never had it as good as we do now.

@@oldunclemick I was running a 1500 dollar gaming PC back then with an excellent 150 dollar 24/96 audio card. Basically an enthusiast consumer system very capable of audio recording (although not multichannel). Unless you were a live music band there was already little reason to invest in gear like a Korg D1600. Heck, you could even make an argument that MPCs were already obsolete for what they had to offer.

As a hardware freak, i have to say, for sampling going over 16 bits aint interesting, and for recording our styles of electronically/digitally generated sound, a good quality late 90's HD recorder that goes up to 24/96., i'm good, these units that you can get for cool prices if you dig da bay a bit are equiped with greaty converters compared to most sound card a homestudio "prosumer" can usually afford. and some of dem have great feartures and options. Personally i own a pair of d 824 (fostex, i'm A TASCAM/FOSTEX GUY), these can record midi, play loops, bounce, etc, etc... okay i wouldnt use these if i was in intrumental asccoustic/electro acoustic recording that you'l;l want to edit. But for using drum machines, synths, and samplers, all working in our usual midi, these are perfect out of the board... OH THESE HAVE ADAT TOO, AND WITH THE P[ROPER CARD YOU CAN USE THEM AS A MULTI OUT SOUND CARD FOR THE computer..

@@DyReckProductions those d824, d1616, d2424 are really top notch bro, these things go up to 24bits/96khz, they are perfect, tascam and fostex are ythe kings for those things because they dont do anything else but home studio recording gear since prehistoric times. and these are the latest in time, just like the S6000 they have detachable faceplatyes, you need tyo by a special cable to do that but that's usefull too. and really they have that snappy sound good converters for that era used to have, very "in your face and precise imo" you need to get them when you find a cool bargain or makwe an offer because i'm not shure these sell that much, but for a producer tha't's a hardware freak; this is really a nice unit to get, with the hd's you have in them yuou can record 11 hours in 24/96. These are the perfect pal to the producer using samplers and synths, and if you are used to akai stuff, you will be at ho,mme, these are real easy to use if you're not after editing, but as we go in midi, we dont have instrument players fucking up and having tyo be edited... of course there are a bunch of units out there, but with those fostex rack series, you cant be disapointed, and cool deal occur every once anmd a while, these dont have the mixer though, personally, in nowadayu you find crazy vintage mixers for very low prices (compared to synth having way less work in them, from the same periods of time...). teac/tascam m series (m3!) are great for thast but these are sold for quite a bit these days, SOUNDTRACS mixers are magical for a producer, they go fluorescent with the eq and are hard to find depending on what you need and whre you are, and the old allen and heath "system 8" are somewhere between the two others i have one, they are noisy if you go hard on preamp though (but that's pretty usual for those type of units), a whole lkot of reggae, digital dancehall, dub, hiphop, electro was produced with a system 8 arounds, these were really nice and have a sound... my opinion though, these are the decision i took regarding recording my prods, and for dubwise too. but a fostex model 2016 can be great if you are not after getting a hudge mixer lol, very practical with those fostex hd recorders, same era, in rack aswell; perfect...
