Thanks Kiril for this video. Since about 2 month, my Z-Stick 7 doesn't work anymore with HA. I downgraded, I bought a new stick and posted informations in different Github Issues, but they where all closed now (stale/autoclose) because nobody works on the issues. I am wondering know ... do you have any issues with your Z-Stick 7 and the newest Z-Wave JS or Z-Wave JS UI and the newest HA Version?

I have a Vera Plus controller integrated with both node-red and Home Assistant. My z-wave devices (mainly Dome branded motion sensors) have been the most consistently reliable. I did have a cheapie z-wave power plug however that would end up with random disconnects, but I don't know if I could attribute that to the Vera hub. Looks like the z-stick 7 AU frequency version isn't available yet, but would like to convert once it is.

Hey Kiril! Thanks for the video! I have recently purchased a RazBerry Z-Wave HAT and was looking for a tutorial to incorporate it into Home Assistant. The problem is that my HA instance is running in a VMWare cluster so I cannot add it directly and was intending on having it on a remote Raspberry Pi that would communicate with Home Assistant via the network. I am guessing Zwave2MQTT is my only choice. Any advice (or tutorial) on this kind of setup would be much appreciated! Thanks again and see you in the next one!

Just an FYI, since this video, there is now an AU and international version of the firmware. As an Australian, I went to download the AU version but there seemed to be an error - 0x50 I ended up downloading the international version and it seems to be working. This is for Any Australian viewers or non US/EU viewers. IF it comes in handy great. If not... oh well.

Hey Kirill! I have some questions about Z-Stick 7: 1.This Z-Stick 7 has a frequency 908.4 MHz or 868.4 MHz? 2.Can it be upgraded from US frequency to EU frequency and it will work in EU?

1. Both are available. It all depends what you order 2. I think - no! But you better ask the Aeotec support to be sure.

Wow, they made that update process difficult.... There is no reason for them to make customers go through all that just to update firmware... 0 points to Aeotec for that... I think this is the best stick going but now I just don't like their policies... Buy a device with bad firmware, submit all kinds of information, jump through hoops, etc... Bad trend... Great video though as always!!!

The update process is not coming from Aeotec, but from Silicon Labs. Silicon Labs are the Z-Wave owners at the moment and all Gen7 devices have their chips inside. So if there is someone to blame for the update process that is Silicon Labs. Thanks for commenting and for the good words about the video 👍

@@KPeyanski Hopefully Aeotec will flash the 'fixed' firmware in newer units... I wonder now if the linux update process is any more straight forward... I am using zigbee stuff so far but there are some great z-wave pieces out there! 😁👍

Yes, most probably all brands that are selling Gen7 Z-Wave sticks will pre-update the firmware on their newer units, but that is not the case for now. As my unit was brand new, but with old FW. The Linux FWupdate process is with a lot more steps and it is generally harder than the Windows one, but if you have some experience with Linux it shouldn't be a problem.

I used the Linux method to update the stick. If you already have a running Linux computer all the first steps are already done. Adding your user to the dialout group is maybe also already done if you are used to running USB serial devices. The rest is installing minicom (one command) and follow the simple steps. It is not really that hard. The Windows installation is an insult. All the registration and installation of hundreds of megabytes of garbage just to upload a small firmware file with xmodem is total madness. Silicon labs could create a small firmware upload exe in a few hours instead of pushing end users through this shit. And so could Aeotec.

Totally agree with you. Hope that this will be streamlined in the future, but for now it is what it is.

Silicon companies just don't know how to make software. They are run by h/w dudes who think they are gods because they create chips and that is hard. Once they finish a new chip, they expect "s/w dudes to just throw some s/w on it real quick" and then they start selling it. That approach includes the firmware running inside the chip. I bought a new Lenovo laptop and it was consuming 30% CPU. I cleaned it from Lenovo s/w and it started working properly. The hard part for Windows exe is to determine which serial port is the right one. Windows doesn't make that easy. You've got to know Windows API, call a bunch of cryptic functions and get it right. Why bother if you can just throw them the bloatware that miraculously already got it right - the feat that is unlikely to be repeated again, not by a silicone company.
