California's Prison Isolation Units: Necessary or Inhumane? | KQED News

In Sacramento, California lawmakers are delving into a growing national controversy over special security units that are used to isolate thousands of inmates from the regular prison population. Civil rights groups say long-term isolation amounts to torture while state corrections officials say the units are necessary and the conditions are humane.
Around the state there are four of these facilities, which are known as Security Housing Units. The most controversial is at Pelican Bay State Prison in Crescent City.
At the heart of the debate: conditions in the units (many inmates are held in windowless cells and have been denied everything from calendars and sweatpants to phone calls); criteria that determine which prisoners are placed there and how they get out; and the lengthy terms some inmates spend in the facilities.
More than 500 California prisoners have been locked in the special units for 10 years or longer, according to state data. Of those people, 78 prisoners have been held inside for more than 20 years.
Over the years, authorities have allowed media into Pelican Bay's Security Housing Unit, but access has been limited and the inmates carefully selected by staff.
However, top corrections officials granted unusual access to a team of reporters and videographers from the Center for Investigative Reporting and KQED. We visited all areas of Pelican Bay's Security Housing Unit except for a section housing leaders of a 2011 hunger strike.
Using a small camera mounted to a wall, our team was able to record Beasley exercising with a rubber handball in the small concrete pen (prison staff only began allowing the balls last year). At all other times-day and night-he is held in his cell alone. While skylights allow filtered sunlight into the units, there are no windows.

It shouldn’t be ignored when convicted murders have learned to master the skill. The short story to solitary confinement is that it fine tunes criminals or even innocent people making them crazy (crazier) and deadly (deadlier) . That’s the governments idea of rehabilitation (well it’s what they want you to believe is them trying to rehabilitate) what it really is...the government making their citizens more criminal then they started out in hopes that when they are released they will come right back and the prisons for profit (private prisons) will seem necessary and will continue to make billions (because they all have stock in them) off of the incarceration of the citizens it’s sworn to protect.

Also just in general its about the conditions of isolation if there is only one toy concrete walls and no sunlight any person sane or insane would only have their mental state further damaged. Im not saying it should be a fucking vacation just that these are human beings aswell. I spent one night in a small jail cell for something that In did not do when I was 16 years old, (My mother had to wait till my dad was not able to see me come in the house). When my mother picked me up, I was soooo incredibly relieved that she got me out, that i never got in trouble ever because of the fear of that cell. The feeling in that cell was sooo lonely and hopeless, that I can not imagine being in that box for months. it would make me a totally different person.

NCG I think it only works on those that needed to be there. In my opinion I feel some people need to die. And some need to be put in jail. Example ones that murder more then 4 people depending on there reasons. Should die. Child rape same deal no reason just dead. Child molesters that never actually did anything jail while taking lessons to uncover why this urge hits then ship them off the bangkok and give them about $350 every 2 weeks for 3 months and forget all about them.

The prison system punishes those who have committed a crime. However, the incarcerated time should include compulsory rehabilitative processes. This doesn't mean behavorial tuition but rather work and classrooms that teach and distract the prisoners from destructive thinking and add to their skillset and make their minds better from the lowly depths they may have been in before. Simple examples include carpentry / religious teachings/ languages etc. High risk individuals can be instructed online and distanced from actual tools or equipment.

That degree of solitude can drive someone crazy, and possibly make them even worse than when they came in, which is be detrimental to the society if all these people go mad and are released.

The whole prison system doesn't work efficiently. In the US after coming out of prison people are very likely to commit another crime, because they have no other choice. Nobody wants these people to work for them etc. I think prison should show the people what they did wrong and make them realise the consequences, not just put them in a box for many many years.

Do you have a positive environment in your home? Embrace it. 90 minutes of isolation felt like years inside this prison for him.

please give these people the help they need. this guy OPENLY ADMITTED to having anger issues. how about he spends these 90 minutes seeing a phycologist and not in a concrete room, which is causing him to lose his mind more than he already has.

Ricky Munoz i'm not entirely sure but i feel i though private prisons already make more then enough money to make this the norm as they basically use inmates as free labor. god prisons need reform so bad

brooke wright you think these dr.s are free? He'll some have taken a life , some have raped babies, some have tortured and mutilated their victims . Really I just watched a utube of a guy on death row for 36 yrs for raping a 6 month old and I don't mean molested I mean vaginally and anally raped a 6 month old. The child did not die but has gone thru multiple operations to reconstruct their onsides.S o all you ppl feeling his treatment is inhumane this area isn't for the ppl that have stolen a car or sold drugs it's for the worse of the worse.Maybe if you feel so bad for them you should let him move in with your family when and if they ever beat the system
