The writers thought that they had "invented" Latvian Ortodox (to not "PO" any real religion) - then they got thank you notes from Latvian Ortodox Churches across the USA thanking them that Seinfeld has brought their religion to public attention.

Animals use large pheromones' to attract mates among other things so by covering his scent in a way makes sense. The old remedy wasn't that far off from actual science.
