Damn, brother! I'm shocked you even took on that project. Flex tape just comes off to me as glorified jumbo-sized electric tape, basically something that can be used as a pretty covering for something, but not as something that can improve structural integrity. Have you tried using carbon fiber or Kevlar for the backing and something like PVC decking for the body? I think a combo like that might yield some very pleasant results.
@chucklearnslithics3751
@chucklearnslithics3751 2 жыл бұрын
The elastic properties of flex tape are in one direction only. Since it does not recompress itself it is only a matter of time till it is stretched out from normal use of the bow. Arguably it will never get past tillering to it's full draw and it will already be spent. As a safety material it will work and likely stop a dangerous explosion, but it won't ever provide performance either.

My thought is that Kramer uses small overlapping layers of the tape like 6 inch sections.

You just made me wonder if the elastic bands use for slingshots might be an option. The wide ones used for physical therapy are pretty much the same and come in varying amounts of tension to stretch.

Adhesion, longevity and susceptibility to heat/cold and determining "pre stretch" are only some of the issues and variables, the best backings have little stretch and high tensile strength.

Apply the flex tape perpendicular to the way it was applied in this video. If it is mostly flexible one way, it may add the strength and flexibility of need to be a good backer. It will just take much longer to apply, with it being multiple small pieces layered in just right.
@murphymmc
@murphymmc 2 жыл бұрын
Flex Tape, a marginal product at a premium price. It stretches, then does not spring back, rendering it useless for a backer and probably most applications where strength is needed. A Gaffers tape would work better (heavy duty duct tape). Not a lot of stretch, therefore better to assist the wood. Fiberglass packing tape has about a 1200 lb rating for strength, that would be nearly ideal. As it's not UV resistant, it'll need some shielding. FYI, anything from Flex company or from Gorilla company are more hype than results. Lots of tests by KZfaqrs show that. Project Farm being one of the most extensive testing sites.

Cactus Jack: Watching you tiller a bow on your tillering rig I wondered how you judge the flex of each arm. It looks like it is somewhat subjective as in ‘by eye’. Do you think a series of horizontal lines drawn on the wall out past the tips of the bows would give you a better measure of the relative flex of one arm compared to the other?

There's a flex tape type product that is essentially fiberglass strip impregnated with a water activated resin compound. You have to soak it in water for a few minutes to get it activated and then apply it to what you intend to repair. It is market as a quick "permanent" repair for tool handles and plumbing. It only has like a 5 or 10 minute working time once fully activated so you'd have to put it on the unfinished stave pretty soon in the process, but I imagine it would still be done in roughly the same time frame that you applied the flex tape in this video. When I saw the title for this video I thought that was what you would be using, as I, myself, have often theorized that stuff would probably make a great bow backing material. I have used it to make the very types of plumbing repairs it is advertised for. In the adds they would show it being used to repair an 8 or 10 pound sledge hammer handle and then using the hammer, or an axe handle and then cutting wood with axe. It's strong stuff! The obstacle I always feared with it, would be that perhaps that strength would make it too stiff to make a proper bow backing. It's made by the same company as the stuff you use in this video but I can't for the life of me remember the exact name of the product. Maybe they don't make it anymore and what you used here is the new version of the product I am talking about. I don't know. If you see this comment, and if you can find the stuff I am referring to, perhaps you could try again with something less stretchy.

Rayon/nylon or similar fibers pulled from the back side weave of scrap carpet remnants found at some curb. Pull that straight and glue it in line with the length of the bow, and then flex tape over that. Flex tape may have some property nice as a covering or wrap, but too much stretch on its own.

I know you've done fiberglass before but what about the fiberglass landscape edging? I tried it on a small bow (first bow attempt after watching one of your videos) out of a 2x4 but my epoxy didn't hold and it delaminated. Probably because I epoxied the side I didn't sand. Haven't had the chance to make a second attempt. I have a feeling it would work pretty well if it's not too thick.

hello, yes, i was wondering if its possible to take a branch from an "acceptable for bows" tree shaped like a capital Y and make a 3 armed bow? im new here so i thought i would just drop an idea and see if it gets any traction. it would still have a handle because of the singular downward branch ( you would grab it just below where it splits into two branches), but also a naturally centered bowstring beacuse of the y shaped bowstring. it would be like some kind of bow/slingshot hybrid where all three arms flex and shoot arrows. how would you even tiller it?. idk. what do you think?

Every video about bow making was the same but yours were different, you used some other materials and you were not afraid to try something different, something new and unusual. And I admire you for that. And i have an idea, or rather i have something new for you to try, a material that i think will work as a bow backing...maybe 😄 The material is pertinax or fr3 or fr4, its a material used for circuit board. Its a material made from resin and glas fibers just like fiberglass. So maybe for your next will it bow, you can try this one. I wish you all the best and just keep going frend. 😉

Sneaky hidden cut at 0:30? When he moves across the camera frame he divides the frame with his body vertically, then moves his body across the entire frame right to left. This would be a very easy cut to transition from the shot he took and the final successful trick shot where he hits the ring. There even appears to be some artifacting left of the target that may be left over from this process. This is a technique often used in film. I could be wrong and he legitimately did that shot in one take bit I doubt it.

6:10 Because it deforms plastically so easily, I bet it's probably not going to do much to help the bow.

Maybe it's a possibility to pre-stretch the flextape, so that it will pull stronger as a backing!?

its a shame it broke but it was informative, you probably should have bound it in tap like u would with sinew, maybe try gluing a fibreglass or PVc strip on first to reinforce limb then wrap it in the fibre glass impregnated flex tape(for hot surfaces like mufflers) from middle out and overlap it 50/50 or more for stress areas on lams? it will probably need to be lacquered with glue also like sinew
