The best European basketball players come from the Balkan region of Europe. This was true with Toni Kukoc, Vlade Divac, and Drazen Petrovic during the Yugoslavia national basketball team and is still true today. The countries of Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina produce the top NBA talent from Europe. Some of the players include Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic, Nikola Vucevic, Bodganovic, Boban, Goran Dragic, and Nurkic. Draft bust Darko Milicic is also included.

@Obi Came Ever heard of ethnic cleansing? Serbs were expelled en masse from Kosovo and Metohija, especially after the bombing in 1999. There is NOT A SINGLE Albanian cultural and historical monument in Kosovo and Metohija, ONLY AND EXCLUSIVELY Serbian. Serbian rulers have built a large number of Orthodox churches and monasteries, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. And isn't that strange - there's a huge Muslim majority, and on the other hand, the complete legacy is Orthodox Christian. And it's not Kosovo or Kosova, it's Kosovo and Metohija. Metohija literally means monastic property. Btw, Luka Dončić's father is from Kosovo and Metohija.

Also comments like "doh, Luka played with grown mens" is so disrespecting when you put in mind that you really need alot of luck to have a coach who is whilling to risk result over development of such a young player. And coaches in Europe lose their job much quicker than in NBA. Also, when someone in US is refering on player stat in europe i never heard a comment that thoose numbers are made in 40 minute game (vs 48 in NBA)

I see many critics about geographical and political definition of the Balkans, but this video is not about that... Only addition from me would be a mention of Peja Stojakovic who was a Serb, but also at least a shout out to Lithuania, the other European basketball talent factory. The Balkans: Greece is a part of Balkan peninsula geographically, and Bulgaria as well, and piece of Romania, and even Istanbul Turkey. But when people say "Balkans" they usually mean that in political context, and in that sense the Balkans is just an easier way to say "ex-Yugoslavia". There is also a definition of "cultural Balkans" that includes ex-Yugoslavia which is geographically just a part of Balkans, but also includes pieces of Yugoslavia that are not geographically on the Balkans, together with Albania and Bulgaria. There you go, confused much? Do that for centuries and you will be where we're at now :) Welcome to the Balkans :)

You understate how great Nikola Jokic is honestly. He's the best center in basketball and it's really not particularly close right now, he's that great. Not just a great passing big man, he's one of the best passers in the game up there with LeBron and CP3, and he's a great scorer when he wants to be, and a solid defender. He's fantastic.

A nice tribute to the Yugoslavians, although there are some major mistakes in this clip. Overall, whenever you see a slavic name ending in "c", it's pronounced "ts" not "k" (e.g. it's pronounced "Petrovits" not "Petrovik") (1:27) That country in purple is not called Macedonia. The official name is the Republic of North Macedonia and it is a rather small part of the ancient Macedonian territory. (2:01) Drazen Petrovic was the definition of the modern (back then) point guard. Not a shooting a guard. Spending time on Nurkic, Bogdanovic (both), Saric, Hezonja, Bender, Zubac, Milicic, Bjelica, Marjanovic or Dragic (both), shows lack of knowledge or respect towards Stojakovic, Vrankovic, Radja, Bodiroga, Rebraca, Danilovic, Paspalj, Djordjevic and many more. Also, Romania is a Balkan country. Muresan was Romanian... The clip is about the "Best European NBA Players". Yet Europe consists of several other countries... Spain (Gasol), France (Parker), Lithuania (Sabonis), Greece (Antetokounmpo), Italy (Belinelli), Russia (Kirilenko), Germany (Nowitzki) are all part of Europe. Those come to mind without research and I just named one of each country for reference as there are literally a lot more like Marciulionis or Schrempf that are considered among the top European players. P.S.1. For a taste of how great Yugoslavian basketball used to be, check Jugoplastika (Pop 84). Probably the best European basketball team ever (this coming from a Greek). With Kukoc playing point guard up until 1991. Only war could stop that team... P.S.2. (4:37) Huge irony to say that "after 1991 Yugoslavia split up after some bloody wars"... I 'll just leave it at that as I bet U.S. history books don't even mention America's part in the disintegration of Yugoslavia.

@@MarioCindric Bulgaria is indeed a Balkan country but the level of basketball is still pretty low there, compared to the rest of the Balkans. Also I can't find any NBA player from Bulgaria, at least worth mentioning as a top player. As for Greece, I consider it a part of the Balkans but geopolitically it is not found in recent data, otherwise Nick Galis (HOFer) would be in the original post among the first. I 'm sure Greece used to be a part of the Balkans as that was what I was taught in school but lately, as in this clip's map, it is not mentioned. Probably more propaganda to further disintegrate the Balkans, if you ask me, so thank you for the correction.

Harsh climate and mountains have influenced the genentic of people there because only the toughest survived, so almost all men there are very strong and tall, much like the nordic nations, but they don’t have a basketball culture unlike the former Yugoslav countries. Altho not directly related to the topic i wanted make some corrections when it comes to the map of Yugoslav countries shown.First, Albania was not a part of Yugoslavia, nor is it really related to the other countries here which are Slavic. Second, Kosovo* is not a country, as it is not recognized by half of the world countries, nor is it a member of the UN and is listed as a south-Serbian province and a legitimate part of this country by the international resolution 1244. The full name of this province is Kosovo and Metohija, Metohija meaning "Land of Monasteries", considering that this is where some of the oldest Serbian Churches and Monasteries are, dating all the way back to 13th century. The reason why Serbs are a minority here today is because over the past centuries countless cleansing of Serbs were done in this southern region, where Albanians were collaborating with the Ottomans,Fascists and most recently the US lead NATO pact which bombed Serbia with depleted uranium in 1999. The reason why Kosovo and Metohija is so important for Serbian people is because for centuries, while 'some' where kissing the feet of every great invader that came upon this land, generations of Serbs gave their lives, to free and protect it and all it's people...from the 1389. Kosovo Battle and 500 years under Ottomans all the way to WW2...Serbs are the ones who left their blood and bones in the soil of this land. They are the ones who actually left their centuries-old heritage here including Churches,Monasteries and monuments of culture older than the discovery of the New World. This is the cradle of Serbian history, Religion, culture and therefore will always remain a part of identity of every Serbian and the heart of this nation. I wanted to share this because a lot of people are not aware of the actual history and background of this region due to the propaganda spread in the western media. Thank you for reading.

People living in Kosovo don't want to be a part of Serbia, Serbia can't reclaim it by force, and literally no one is going to help - if anything, trying to do that would effectively end Serbia. So just a fact - Kosovo is an independent state.

Whatever you say guys, but even if he didn't play in NBA, Dejan Bodiroga was the best player in Europe! And one of the best players in the world. He proved that twice.

He forgot to mention several players who are currently in the NBA, such as Alen Smailagić, Luka Šamanić, Marko Gudurić ... Until recently, Ivica Zubac was in the NBA, as was Nikola Mirotić. Cedi Osman was born in Macedonia, his mother is of Bosniak ethnicity, and his father is Turkish. Deni Avdija will probably be among the top 10 picks in the upcoming draft, and his father Zufer Avdija is a Gorani, who played for the Yugoslav national team at the 1982 World Championship. He also forgot Peja Stojaković, Nikola Peković, Gordan Giriček, Sasha Danilović, Rasho Nesterović, Sasha Pavlović, Boštjan Nachbar, etc...

I would argue Lithuaine was a big powerhouse back on the day too. Just like Spain has been dominant in the last couple of decades.
