Hi David I remember my aunty having one of these radios. This was in the fifties when I was a kid I remember how she looked after that radio she would put a soft cloth over it when not used she didnt have a TV and it was her pride and joy. I remeber how she would say it was time for the news just how much value she would put into it. Just turning it on was respectful process. Compared to today my kids and grand kids don't have value she showed. To her it was an incredible amazing piece of wonderful equipment. How things have changed. 😊

I had that exact same radio when I was a kid. I used to listen to seriels like "Dad and Dave" "Hop Harrigan" and several others. I hated it if Mum and Dad told me we were going out and I had to miss any episodes. I am 76 next March and the radio bought back many happy memories. Radio to me is much better than TV because one had to use ones imagination. Thanks for the memories.

The capacitor has become "incapacitated". That is funny. I have never heard anyone say that obvious thing before! Great.

I am retired and I have extensive but stale experience in electronics too. I really appreciate the high technical content and theory that you present when repairing these items. I have been repairing several radios, all tube models and I am inspired to continue with them even when components fail and I have to use theory and measurement to figure out what went wrong. It is encouraging to see you do this and even though handicapped by having only minimal information/specifications, you have still come up with a nice sounding old tube type radio. Hi David just an update on the Collier & Beale set I'm restoring.. I already powered the radio up with a dim bulb tester and at first it didn't give any sound at all ...and guess what, the output transformer was open. So this video is actually perfect timing! I just experienced what you experiened in this video but it took me ages to figure out what the problem was until now. Luckily, I bought another set that had a speaker with a good output transformer and used that to test my recapped radio. Now it works fine and produces great sound. Thanks for sharing this. Btw, congrats on the steady increase of subs. You deserve it! Merry Chritmas and a Happy New Year!

Great restoration David, the set cleaned up nicely too. The negative bias voltage derived via a power transformer winding for the output valve is quite a common arrangement, most of the NZ valve sets I've repaired are the same, it fooled me initially until I figured it out. I liked the way that capacitor failed with a 'crack', normally for me they short or getting stinking hot! Happy New Year and look forward to more video's in the future 👍☺

A great video David. I’m making this comment 4 years late but I think it’s worthy. The el33 and 6v6 are not really equivalent. The el33 needs about 3 volts bias and has twice the gain of the 6v6 which as you pointed out needs much higher bias. Who knows whether in the day they changed the bias resistors for the different valve's. ,!! According to radiomuseum Philips made el33 valves in Sydney up to 1944. I have an air zone 414 which is of the same vintage as this plum pudding and similar circuit. It arrived with a 6v6 output valve but luckily in my junk box I found a good el33. I was watching exeters lab where he was restoring an air zone like mine and found that the 6v6 can damage the radio. So that may be the cause of the oc output transformer in the plum pudding. And the 6v6 could be weak giving confusing results. Anyway I enjoyed this video, thank you David.

Hi David. You do nice work. Having just built a 1 RF / 1 IF home brew superhet, (6BAC, 6BE6, 6BA6, 6AT6, 6V6, 6X4) I have been thinking about the issue of isolating the tuning condenser. I think the isolation is two fold: One to allow the ground currents to be directed using wires rather than interacting with other ground currents in the chassis and two, possibly more important, the condenser is a microphone in that vibration will modulate the tuning. So vibration from the speaker can cause tuning modulation at audio frequencies, resulting in a rough sound methinks. I have mine hard mounted and am experiencing some issues that I think may stem from the above considerations.

I managed to salvage mine - the open on the secondary was on the very inner winding and I managed to hook an and out and reconnect. Cheers!

One of many nice tube type radios. Those are from the good old days. I don’t see a year, but I’m going to guess this one’s a 1946. A time in which American workers took their time and pride into these wonderful, high-quality works of art. Try to put this radio and a modern Chinese radio side by side, we both know which one ☝️ will sound better. From the steel chassis to the tuning gangs, high-quality speaker and metal knob shafts, to the dial cord to the dial light, and the glass face, this radio is like a ‘57 Chevy. All this under a very handsome Bakelite case. Painted on numbers, yes, when everything was better. This radio is worth teasing your kids or wife with. Just set it on the table and call everybody to Christmas 🎄 or Thanksgiving dinner. Yes, a little plum pudding. All the nice radios of days gone by. Bakelite or wood, they’re really the radios 📻 that should be in houses 🏡 across America. I think 🤔 they should be a living room radio. Not for the garage, bedroom, basement or shed. A basement may be fine if there’s some kind of value that I know, but don’t know how to communicate it. Simper way to say, if the basement is converted into your living room. Some unconventional houses are done in ways some people don’t think are possible. I like that little Spanish jingle, which starts at 12:47, and lasts until 12:53 on the video timing. Can you tell me who it is, or the name of the song? I’m guessing Selena. Please keep these great radio videos coming. If you come across any cardboard cased radios 📻, please don’t turn them away as some KZfaqrs do. They are probably 1940’s and 1950’s radios, which are much sturdier than Crosley record player radio stereos today, produced from 2009 to present 🎁. These 1940’s and 1950’s cardboard cased radios are still a major piece of history. These could be 1960’s. I’m a poor guesser at when cardboard cased radios, record players, and record player radio combinations came out. Great 👍 videos. Keep ‘em rollin’.

Great video as usual. Although you indicated that there was a difference between yourself, fellow Australians and New Zealanders, I really couldn't discern a difference. Though those that live in the northern US states say they have a hard time understanding we southerners, I have a hard time understanding those from the New England states. Oh well. 32:30 The broadcast range starts about 5 Khz short of the bottom end of the band(535 Khz for the band, 540 Khz) for this radio, but at the other end(top of the band) goes 35 Khz into the Narrowcast range above 1605 Khz(this set tunes up to 1650 Khz).

A suggestion, instead of mangling those threads with pliers. Try threading on another nut. Then you can turn the nuts against each other to turn the screw body. Tighten the top nut against the lower nut to adjust clockwise and turn the bottom nut out into the top nut for anti-clockwise. Hope that makes sense. :) Really enjoying the content!

Fascinating, I've never seen a Receiver with abbreviated State names for bands. I finally figured that out. U S. broadcasters, hammers. radio types transmit licensed call signs not abbreviated, state letters.

As always David , a masterful piece of restoration.. The Kriesler is the same age as I am.. Perhaps if I pop over to you in Oz, you can do a restoration & make-over on me to give us a new lease of life ? My better half say's I need at least an alignment job so I can receive her instructions clearly.. Personally, I think I'd prefer to stay slightly 'off' frequency !

Radio New Zealand International are still broadcasting, unlike Radio Australia. I still listen to them on my FRG-7. They started broadcasting DRM digital regularly a few years ago.

I have a couple of those plum pudding radios I picked up cheap at the HWS auction in Brisbane. Haven’t looked at them yet. Your video gives me the confidence to tackle them! Only problem which I don’t think you encountered was both mine have cracked or missing Bakelite strips on the speaker opening. I’m not sure how to handle something like this. I’m sure there are restorers who can make substitutes pieces and glues them in so as you’d never know, it I think it’s beyond my skills. I bought the second radio for spares to fix the first, but looking at them they are so beautiful I can bring myself to rat one of them to fix the other…

good to see u put a mains fuse in, definitely could save the trani . you can peak the short wave bands in the same way as MF. ps 6x5 rect tubes with flat plates are known to short :)

Love your videos. RNZ could have been 9700kHz to the Solomons/PNG or 9765kHz to the Pacific. I can get their broadcast targeted to the Pacific in Southern California in the afternoons, but it's weak. The Asian station could have been China Radio International on 19m band; CRI took over some of the shortwave frequencies Radio Australia used when they shut down their SW transmitters.

Great job David. Shame about the broken adjusting screw, and the open circuit output transformer, but you can’t win them all! Case polished up a treat to complement all the hard work you did inside. Spreadsheets for transformer specifications? I vowed I would never even look at another spreadsheet when I retired lol. Cheers Lynton

I just discovered from the Hallicrafters Groups site, if you are cleaning plastic covers (side with no lettering) try dilute toothpaste with a cosmetic wipe. Not fancy toothpaste, ordinary toothpaste. Did a great job on my s meter.

Very good David! I've enjoyed the restoration. The only thing I've noticed is that you didn't mention if you care about the new Capacitor's outer foil connection... Old (Wax) cap's had a black line at one end and even stated "ground" or "outer foil", new cap's don't (maybe nowadays this is no longer needed as the components are placed on printed circuit boards) But in old radios, the outer foil can be an excellent hum antenna if connected backwards.... Whit the help of an oscilloscope and your own hand, you can easily find the outer foil in new capacitors so you can mark it in order to respect the original connection. Thank you for sharing!!! @46:13 David I have to point out that even though the peak is correct you could have the situation where some of the IF coils have drifted up from the 455kc and some have drifted down. This would give the peak correctly but you cannot know if that peak could be higher unless you trimmed each coil. This could also affect the selectivity particularly on SW.

35:08 If you turn the schematic representation of valve 6X5GT, you get a "sad face"!

Re the dial pointer, keep in mind that station separation was changed from 10Khz to 9Khz in 1978 so the pre-1978 dials are now out of whack to that extent.

The rubber grommets under the tuning cap are for RF isolation, you can't have any connection between the tuning cap and the chassis.

The analog meter you were using to measure the bias may have been loading the circuit, giving you the lower reading. The digital meter is probably a 10 or 11 meg per volt where the analog is probably 20 to 50k per volt. Nice work! 👍👍

You should watch the Mr Electricity guy on youtube. I seen him rewind a transformer like this, quite interesting. Good vid BTW.

Consider rewinding the primary. I started rewinding transformers at 15 yrs old and once you do one the fear goes away. Also your radio is more genuine.

An odd looking radio, but working well after you set it up. Is it a hard early plastic case? Strange colour they chose for the case, but then I was not around to see what the trend was back then.
