Man, idk how I missed this. I went to school with Ken and was good friends with him and his family. I was at Ken’s very first live show he ever played. Him and his cousin started a band called Bloodwork and he was great even in his first show. I watched him progress from his first show ever to now. It’s pretty awesome. It’s so badass seeing where he’s at now and the love that fellow drummers have for him.

Ken is in the top 3 extreme drummers right now. That's not opinion, but fact.

It is so interesting to see drummers who have a very different approach on drumming - I always liked to do a lot of systematic practise with metronome etc and it helped me a lot. But at some point I realised that I don't become a good drummer with this kind of practise only. Since I started practising more songs I became much more confident on stage and now I always do a good mix of both kinds of practise. What surprised me most in this interview is the fact that Ken doesn't practise that much. I also had a time where I was practising only 1-2 times a week and it was enough to keep my level but I didn't feel confident and I didn't progress in any way - on the other hand I am not so much on tour playing every day a really brutal set of songs. Being on tour is probably the best practise you can get.

What Kerim spoked about the "climax" of the song, and the blastbeat should smack the listener's face, I totally agree. Also about the 'listen to your body'-talk was useful. I noticed that i've doing right things. I'm glad. Thanks Drumtalk for sharing this!

I think Ken is the best extreme metal drummer to exist so far, his technique's, style, tightness especially pretty hair are all one of a kind.

What a great interview. I think it’s so important, specially for young drummers, to listen to two accomplished drummers say: don’t worry about the name of the technique, listen to your body. Or “I never liked practicing to a metronome, I much rather practice to songs or the set I’ve go play live.” This resonates deeply within myself, being a 42 year old drummer who only in the last… eight months as come to terms to listening to my own learning process, and let me tell you, you will make so much more progress practicing two hours while in harmony to whatever your ears and body are saying back, than eight forceful hours a day with no self awareness.

Ken and Krimh are STUNNING, AWESOME! With this video, thanks Drumtalk for your GOLDEN work, I start to watch and listen more death metal drummer and music. Definitely. I can understand the part about groove, where they talk about that their hands are bound and they are at some point, but I think it has more to do with the definition most people have of groove. They almost always point to like funkdrummers or something and yes they groove big time, but to me groove can be in blastbeats and whatnot. Just on a different level. It's such an abstract concept that it really is up to the listener to determine what groove is. I hear tons of groove in players like Longstreth and Laureano, it's just not your stereotype "off the shell type of grooving" everyone thinks of when talking about it. To me people who say metaldrummers don't groove perse just aren't listening or listen to it with a biased opinion and when they don't hear the ghostnotes and "funky" hihat stuff they say it doesn't groove. In the end it's just all about time, feel and sound.

I thinhkn what is finally starting to be said in interviews with extreme metal drummers is how important things like "listen to your body" and "realize that everyone is different" are. That and how method and technique becomes fluid over the spectrum of speed. I think a lot of newer drummers try to apply the same technique across the board in their drumming and the result is a lot of frustration and a lot of wasted time.

“Can’t have groove in metal, there’s too much sound to push through, you’ll end up sounding like limp bizkit” Chris Adler and Mario duplantier have shown this is not the case, you can have amazing groove and still be heavy as fuck. Not shitting on these guys they’re both phenomenal drummers and Aborted is one of my favourite bands…But you can definitely have groove in metal🤘

Respectfully, we are missing out on the fact that Tomas Hake plays ghost notes, not in a funk style, but in a unique, groovy style that very much fits into metal, moreso on The Violent Sleep of Reason than any other Meshuggah album.

Some people are just born or better "equiped" to play instruments and they know what they do.

Ken Bedene is fucking crazy. One of the tightest and fastest drummers i've seen in extrememetal.

Around 15:00 and on, of what Krimh's saying about blasts and changing it up, of what I'm listening to now, Napalm Death and Belphegor mix up their songs and albums really well this way...plenty of blasts, but rounded-out songs with other beats and some tempo changes. The blast always comes back in between. Or as a rule: sometimes, the band is just a band that blasts. Nothing wrong with that!

Great Drummers

One band that I think has been able to add some interesting space and a little funk on the drums while keeping it metal is Whitechapel. Get Ben Harclerode on the show! And to echo another comment or two; it would be cool to see Mario Duplantier and Francesco Paoli.

Krimh's comments about dynamics and blast beats at the 15 minute mark are really accurate, IMO. This is why I get bored by bands like Krisiun really fast, because all you get is nothing but blast beats all the time, with little to no variation or dynamics or groove. The occasions that Krisiun do slow down are really effective, but I find those to be few and far between (just using them as an example, there's lots of bands out there who are guilty of that very thing). These guys are both amazing players and came off as really modest and down to earth, and I enjoyed listening to them talk.
