Hi. We are Kris and Mike. We have a KZfaq channel / @krisandmike about our life in Ecuador(we moved from Canada 1.5 yrs ago). We met Byron when he was doing construction on our house and eventually met his whole family and we have become great friends.
Unfortunately, Byron tore the ligaments in his right knee and will not be able to work in construction and support his family. We are trying to raise money for the surgery(in Ecuador), recovery time and support for his family while he is not working.
ALL money collected by Kris and Mike will be transferred to Byron in his Ecuador bank account.

Hi i am Ecuadorian, so i Will Tell you in Guayaquil there áre hospitals make surgery free, these hospitals áre from the goberment, one of them Is Abel Gilbert Ponton Hospital . The address Is 29 and oriente street. Byron should go this goberment hospital and they Will do the surgery free...there área another hospital what make surgery free as hospital universitario. Byron should get information...about it....there área free goberment hospitals that make surgeries free un Guayaquil...he do not have to pay money in those Places....and it does not matter Byron does not live in Guayaquil, they Will go the surgery anyway

He is waiting for appt with government now to see what government support will do. Plus even if he can get it there is a long waiting list for surgeries. Any money we collect will go to his family during this waiting time. I do appreciate your detailed information. Thanks 🙏

Ok I spoke with them and they are contacting those hospitals. If the surgery can be done there quickly we will adjust goal accordingly. Thanks very much.

What about stem cell therapy? It is much cheaper and can regrow the ligaments or joint ( before surgery, or it won't work).

Did you guys check with NGO hospitals? My guess is that you did. But there are some hospitals from people like the Lions or Rotary. FYI.

How wonderful to help this deserving family. I wish him a speedy recovery. Has Byron had an MRI to see the extent of the tear? My friend Sue has seen an amazing ortho specialist in Manta regarding her knee. She said the care she has received has been far superior than her care in Calgary and her knee is so much better. Thanks Debra very much. Yes got it. He has seen doctors and has had some tests. With the money we are collecting he will be able to get better care. The private system here is better than Canada. 🙏

Hi Sam and Linda here, we just donated to help support the family. We trust Mike and Kris and watch them every week. Excellent content on their journey in Ecuador. I hope all goes well for Byron, I can tell he has a lovely family and I trust that their faith in God will get him thru this difficult time. On another note, Mike can you research if a US citizen came to live in Ecuador would there be a dual tax situation, and what would I need to know about assets, etc. You always do excellent research so that may be a good topic for you. Keep up the good work.

Y'all are the best no matter if it's free are not to get the surgery the family has to survive and without our help they will struggle and if we as humans can donate just a dollar it will make a big difference thank you for helping them

Hi Kris and Mike. Ecuador and the people are close to my heart. I lived there a year in 2015. Although I probably won't get back since my last visit in 2018, it is like my second home. Hi there Is a public hospital in Santa Elena it's name Is Liborio Panchana hospital...in this place can make the surgery free to Byron.

Don't ever stop being good people and trying to help. I agree with the other poster that he should be getting this surgery for free, according to my Ecuadorian family. Some Ecuadorians do not want the free medical care as it has it's fair share of "horror stories".

He has gotten so much run around trying to get the free surgery. The free system on the coast now is broken. No urgency and he gets told different things. He is heading to Guayaquil on Monday to try again showing up in emergency and hopefully won't be turned away.

@@KrisandMike yeah. There are different levels of socialized medicine in this world. Which you know, being Canadian. Even the NHS in the UK is having issues with an 8 million procedure waiting list. Plus, I love Ecuador... but you have that "criollle livelihood" that often slows things down even more.

I'm very surprised to hear that he will no longer be able to work in construction. I've had my share of knee problems, and he could get the tendons fixed, and, worst case scenario, he could also get a knee replacement if his arthirits is too bad. One of my knees moved just like his. The tendon got repaired. Granted, I don't know the extent of his injury, but I'm shocked to hear that it can't be fixed to the point that he could go back to his field of work.

Yes that's what two doctors told him. Construction jobs here are very physically intense.

Stupid question - doesn’t Ecuador have universal health care coverage for citizens and residents?

A great question. I thought so as well. So I have been told you still need to pay a small amount each month to get that coverage. Many poor families don't pay that amount so no coverage. They have an appointment next week to see if they can pay for 3 months which is the wait time for pre existing conditions. Then a number of months wait time for surgery then recovery time. We are following every lead for options.
