1920 Kriss Kross Stropper Razor Blade Disassemble and Restore

Just as a reference for anyone watching in the future and looking for an easier way to disassemble the wheel from the crank, use a flat bladed screwdriver in the teeth of large gear beneath the blade holder and prevent it from turning while rotating the leather piece backwards (the direction that *doesn't* give resistance through the handle). You can unthread the leather disk without needing to disassemble the cover over the gears. It makes it super easy to pull apart to service the strop.

If you’ve never sent a highly valuable one off piece across the room whilst polishing it, you’ve never polished anything! Enjoyed this as its honest and mistakes aren’t hidden and you accept that they were made. Looks lovely now!

Thanks for the video. This help me deep clean the one I just bought, now it looks as new as a 97 year old sharpener can look

I played with one of these many times at my Grandma's house (she was married in 1903). Hers was a deluxe version I have never seen since. Instead of nickel (common surface for quality metal items at that time) the outside was covered in very high quality tan saddle leather with contrasting stitching. had no idea what it was then - just liked cranking it and watching it spin and flip over.

Too bad you don't have any photos, sounds pretty intricate. Wonder if it was custom made or something.

Just got mine today and thanks for taking the time to make the video and help out. If i may, the narrative words were very hard to read kinda blended in with background but other than that really good video with good visuals

I would love to get mine serviced. The main lid you popped up yours looks slightly different than mine. Mine does not have that lip where you were grasps it with your fingernails to pull it off. Mine works will except for one simple issue. the blade holder goes up and down but it will not flip over to the other side after you make two rotations. The tension lever works on mine. Where can I have mine serviced? Is there a place I can have it shipped to for a major service repair?

so is there no way of removing the disk without having to disassemble the whole top of the sharpener? after seeing that the center crank sprocket is screwed into the plate and holding it all tohether, shouldnt you still be able to remove the disk by simply unscrewing it like how you tried the first time when you applied wd-40?

what type of leather did you use to replace the strop?

Did you glue the new leather on to the wheel? What type of leather did you use? I'd like to try to restore one stropper that I found.

No, the screw holds it together and rotates the leather around. Just need to make a small hole to fit the middle part. I was searching for garage sales and found one that had a bin of leather randomly, and took a few pieces from there. You could also try restoration oil if the leather isnt too damaged.

Just old Evapo-Rust I had from a previous project. You can reuse it a few times, pretty decent stuff. They have better cleaners but it's a good general place to start. Krud kutter is pretty good too, but more pricey.
