In today's episode I dive deep into the Tribe life of the Mentawai people on Siberut Island, located off the coast of Padang, West Sumatra. During this episode I will how you how the Mentawai tribes eat, sleep, walk, talk and how their view is of the 'world outside'. I even get a Mentawai Tattoo, the oldest tattoo art in the World. Going to meet the Mentawai tribe feels like jumping hundreds of years back in time. Hunting with poisoned arrows, eating live worms, use pigs as currency and so much more. It's fascinating! Besides all that, they speak their own language too, Bahasa Mentawai, which I try to learn.

I have been there for almost 2 weeks for my documentaries, deep in Gorottai and Madobak village (2019). I felt the same relaxing yet adventurous time in my life without any connection, using pompong, wet and muddy walks through the jungle, eating sagoo and cooked sagoo's worms, playing with bobcats, and the clear river's water is kind of a gem to have around, too bad my drone was on my body when I fell into sagoo's water to stop at the waterfall which the water was very nice to drink for. The worst yet crazy thing to remember is when I was trapped in heavy rain in the middle of nowhere, no houses, no safe place, and the only option I had was to keep going or get trapped again by the floods if I stop. Ahh I really miss all the excitement. Thank you Kris, you call back my memories.

Kristian word of advice on the Garmin Inreach Mini you have to register it on the local BASARNAS (Search and Rescue) so your PLB or ELT (Personal Locator Beacon/Emergency Locator Transmitter) SOS can get recognized

Awesome travel doc Kris! I love that you left Aman Bauna's choice to live there as raw shoot without translation. 22:14 He suddenly spoke to us in person. "Not good out there. Jakarta, Padang. Buy food. All money.. even to go pee pee. :) Here its not so. We DO want to live there but after 2-3 days.. no money - how? Our life here is rich. For food - sago, tapioca, banana, plantain.. whatever that we need its all here. If we live here with little money, we can do quite a bit. For my needs its better here in Mentawai.. Tourists come in we guide, we get money to buy rice and sugar. But if there's no tourist we will make do with less." Ribuan terima kasih for sharing your lens in this remote land. Was in Mentawai in 2013, did a similar trip/tour like this one but shorter. Even back then and moreover as a fellow Indonesian, I wasnt sure how I felt about it. Privileged and humbled of course, but also weirdly I feel like exploiting something. Perhaps the only time in Indonesia where I really felt like a tourist but a different one. I couldn't begin to imagine how you feel.

I'm from Nias Island, above the Mentawai Island. Mentawai is the closest relative of our tribe. but most of them still maintain a primitive life and live in the forest.

This was so worth the wait and definitely not tight on the sack!! LOL!! That line cracked me up. So many great moments in this video and was such a pleasure to watch. I really enjoyed seeing the life of the Mentawai people. Thank you for showing so many different aspects of life there. You had me laughing so hard watching you try and eat that worm. The pig scene, while difficult to watch, is a reminder about how far removed we are from our food source here in the West. Thanks for explaining why you wore the same shirt for 6 days. 😁 With all the adversity you faced in the process of making this video you persevered and put out some top notch content. Wow the video really can capture the beautifulness of Mentawai. It's so beautiful and magical to see the large green rainforest still exist. Jika hutan, satwa, tumbuhan yang tersedia untuk saudara2 di suku Mentawai ini adalah termasuk 'perhiasan dunia', & fasilitas untuk mereka menikmati hidup.. Dan pindah ke Padang, Bukittinggi memang menggoda, drastically comfortable facilities (roads, lights, electric, foods, etc). Tapi sangat mahal dan sulit digapai saudara2 kita.. Maka betapa pemurahnya Tuhan yg menakdirkan manusia hidup di berbagai tempat di dunia ini. Diberi fasilitas ekosistem untuk bertahan hidup (hutan berlumpur, Savana kerontang, gurun terik, pesisir berbadai, dll) lalu ternyata kita diberi kitab suci yang turun untuk memandu hidup kita, bahwa hidup yg keras ini bukan untuk menghukum kita yg dilahirkan tanpa tahu apa-apa... Tapi sebuah petualangan menaklukkan badai hujan kehidupan yg kadang dibenci maupun disukai, yang suatu saat akan berakhir... Yaitu dengan kematian. Panduan pun mengatakan bahwa kematian bukan sebuah akhir. Bahkan ternyata petualangan hidup lahir-mati kita hanya seakan sehari atau setengah hari (just like watching Kristian's video 😄). Tapi petualangan yg dilalui dengan mengerjakan perintah & waspada menjauh dari larangan dlm buku petunjuk, adalah bekal kita untuk bisa pindah ke "Padang, Bukittinggi, dll" setelah mati. A Beautiful, Free, Happy, Content, No Mess, Eternal, after life... Thank you so much brother Kristian Hansen atas pelajaran hidup ini. Tidak heran banyak orang terkesan sama video ini. Karena bikin kita mikir tentang kehidupan yang sebenarnya kita jalani masing-masing. Senang sekali baca komentar insightful lain disini, thank you guys... Hanya orang buta yang tidak tahu Mentawai. Mentawai itu adalah salah satu suku paling tua di Indonesia. Saudara suku terdekatnya adalah Dayak, Nias, Minasaha, Toraja dan ada beberapa suku lainnya.
