"High Hopes" is one of these latter-day Pink Floyd songs that, without Roger Waters or Syd Barrett, Gilmour could carry the mantle with pride.

@@Meine.Postma that is an odd way of describing their divorce. Do you subscribe to leaving children with only one of their parents as well? It should be noted that it was Waters who left, it was Waters who fired Richard, it was Waters who wished to stay in the past, as evident by the horrible creations Waters has embarked on since his departure, to include bigotry. I think it is universally acknowledged that Division Bell & Momentary Lapse of Reason are far greater than Final Cut & Ummagumma, the last Waters & Syd albums. The support of what Steven Sorrell stated is simply the success that can be seen, especially in comparison to Waters.

this band would have been lost without David gilmour from the start they haven't needed anybody else for the last 25 or 30 years this guy's vocals and instrumentals are vital Roger basically created the band but this guy has kept his craft at the forefront of his concentration and it shows... anytime Roger is there they kind of diminishes from everything cuz he's so dramatic David gilmour always sings the songs to perfection...

These guys were highly educated and intelligent. They were all studying architecture when they met up. If I recall, Syd and the others formed the band to help pay schooling costs. Also note: Gilmour and Barrett were childhood friends. Gilmour taught Syd how to play guitar. It was one of the reasons they brought Gilmour into the band when Syd began to slip away.

Hi Kristin. Thank you for reacting to this. Glad you liked it. This is one of my favorite versions of this song. He visited Pompeii with the Pink Floyd in 1971 and played in that same ancient amphitheater, but without any spectators other than their crew. It was very surreal, they played "Echoes" (another of my favorites) along with other songs. He returned to the same amphitheater with the band in the video we just saw in 2016(45 years later). They played to some 3,000 people over two nights I believe. They are all phenomenal musicians in their own right. I've heard that was the first live performance to a crowd of any kind since the year 45 AD. Hence they were not allowed to sit in the seating area. They were all on the floor of the arena. David Gilmore was 70 years old at the time. The video on the screen was the original video released with the song by Pink Floyd(minus Roger Waters) in 1994. I believe Mr Gilmore doesn't play notes on his guitars......he plays emotions on the strings.

About min 7:38 David Gilmour is just an unmatched musician in so many words that I can't even be able to find accuracy to describe, those dynamics he just produces out of thin air, but how they just hit real Sutil in the soul fibers. This man was indeed blessed with a gift of music, if I can go further, before Pink Floyd, he was just a busker, playing music for coins, now he is a living legend, but he deserves it for sure. God bless David Gilmour!!

Love your inspired requests and reactions !! DG is a living god and to sound that good at 70 years young is testament too fine wine ageing beautifully . This version loses ground due to not having other Pink Floyd members around it ,so pulse live version is better. The last time DG played here was recording Live at Pompeii in 1971 with no audience,so epic too go back there in 2016.

Knowing the bands history and the lyrics of this song, it chronicles the bands climb to super stardom and he's now looking back on such. Basically says how they all desired to reach the top of their mountain but when they did, they still felt the need to reach for more. Also looking back on what they had to go thru to get there...aka the burning bridges, etc.

The version from LIVE in GDansk with an orchestra even better on lap steel slide solo and outro with acoustic classical guitar is simply sublime. As the producer of 'The Wall ' Bob Ezrin said, "David has the best hands in the business. You could give him a ukulele and he'll make it sing like a Stradivarius" Yes, indeed. I couldn't agree more.

Great choice! If I had to choose a favorite PF song (and there are SO many) it would be this one - as we grow older, songs like this take on a deeper meaning - the loss of our childhood dreams as we become adults. i agree with one of the other comments that the Pulse Live version (or the studio version) is even more so.
@jessrodriguez9160

I agree with you Charleston. It is one of my PF faves as well. Could've been better if more of them(Original Pink Floyd) were there with him. However what makes this so special to me is #1: the quality of his performance at the age of 70, #2: His return to Pompeii after 45 years and playing to a crowd in the same arena and last but not least the closing of the song with the acoustic guitar after he finished playing on the slide guitar. He did not do this so beautifully on the Pulse version nor the studio version.

As amazing as this concert was, I still feel it's missing something, which Pulse in 1994 had. There's an extra layer of warmth and soul that this concert just doesn't have. 1994 was peak, the high water mark before the tide rolled back. They had a perfect collection of musicians, vocalists and stage designers, and I suspect it will never be equalled.
