Really cute and clever song and performance. We don't see this kind of pure and simple creativity today.

What a bittersweet video... Looking back, life seemed a little simpler then and people, in general, more "connected" no matter how cheesy it might have appeared.

I love how through "rose-colored" glasses people always get nostalgic about the "good ol' days" and life "seemed a little simpler." The facts - the reality is during this TV special, Karen Carpenter was miserable, secretly dealing with a horrible eating disorder (and be dead within 5 years at the age of only 32) and in a few years Kristy McNichol would have a breakdown dealing with having to stay closeted and lie abut her sexuality. All of these things have existed since people have been around, but so many lies and secrets were forced on people. Openness and being truthful would save many lives. Karen Carpenter was SO talented but had such a sad tragic life and no one was openly discussing anorexia nervosa at the time.

Many thanks for posting this. There sure were a lot of wonderful Christmas specials in those days. I have one of Donny & Marie, and this one reminds me of it. Here's to the good old days.

I love this cheesey 70's variey show banter. Karen had such charisma. They don't make tv like this anymore.

I miss variety shows like this too. It was where family could come together and enjoy something innocent & high spirited

With everything going on right now in the world all the lies hysteria I long for these times again corny and wholesome but for the most part Authentic how lucky Kristy and all of them were to have these experiences and memories

@Gwenster11 Probably devastated- Karen does seem like the "big sister" type here. In fact, according to "Little Girl Blue," if Karen had a daughter one day, she had wanted to name her "Kristi." Richard ended up naming one of his daughters that.

you know i wonder how kristy felt when karen died, sometimes you just winder becuase she was on both christmas specials, and idk, i've just always wondered. hmmmmm.....

Hopefully, you are still active on the youtube scene, but I think she was at Karen's funeral. It's very possible that Kristy would've been there, considering that Kristy and Karen are buddies in these Carpenters Christmas specials.

Wow, Kristy hit Karen pretty good across the face with that snow ball throw. Karen starts looks too skinny then (1978).

What a horrible song.....and I'm a HUGE Karen C. fan!! I was working in Century City in the late 70's, and I saw Karen going into the EMMYS one nite...and she was SO VERY THIN....I never forgot it....She died way too early...with a voice that few will ever match.....

Anyone notice when Karen sings these novelty songs, she almost sounds like an ordinary anybody singing? Her rich voice isn't there for this one.

I was thinking that Kristy was holding her own with Karen. Lol

I think that's what she wanted it to be. I notice that Karen's normal speaking voice is in a sort of normal, upper register. I've only heard her once speak in a lower tone, and then you'll recognize that "basement voice" that we all know. For these variety shows and TV specials she just wants to blend in her singing with others at a level that the song calls for. No trying to show off or upstage anyone. ;)

Karen Carpenter is good, you'd have to be pretty awful to sing a song with her and have it come out bad :)
