A friend and I are doing Sarah’s botanical Watercolor Workbook together via Zoom. We do a page every week. My friend, who was never into art and painting, is loving it! And she was the one who suggested painting together online.

The biggest problem I have with sketchbooks is every 'sketchbook tour' on KZfaq/Insta/TikTok are works of art: final drawings/paintings on every single page, not a single rough sketch or failed sketch in sight. So when I'm sitting there with my sketchbook, filling pages with weird hands and awkward cats.... I just feel worse and worse and worse because my subconscious has become convinced that sketchbooks need to be as pretty as final artworks

@@KristyRice You are so very right! If only I didn't love seeing the art itself lol. Maybe someday they'll just name them for what they are: art book tours. (And also, I wish more artists would show sketchbooks! I like seeing the mistakes, the practice, the discovery)

I bought Sara’s book #2 last month and I use book #1 for warming up. I used a fine point micron pen to trace out most of the pictures first so I have the ability to work through the book out of order. I love the muscle memory of the tracing. I have developed more confidence and have tried my own color choices. These workbooks are fantastic.

There are a lot of good thoughts and great ideas about approaching a drawing. I will watch this several times to catch more of them. There are many tips that can free us of our own stumbling blocks and tips to help improve our work. I love the approach about keeping all the lines until you are satisfied and erase then, rather than draw erase draw erase. I mostly do that, but sometimes, when something doesn't seem to be working, I can get into the draw erase cycle. That is usually a sign to step back or pause. Take a breath to start again. I sometimes tell myself to stop. I'm done, so I don't keep going until it's a true mess. Since we are our own worst critics, we aren't satisfied with them, probably because our works don't match our minds eye. Practice and muscle memory will help. I just need to remind myself. Thank you for the collaboration. I take it as permission to play and enjoy and not make it a chore.

Yes, yes, and yes!!! This was such an eye opening expression in words of things I have been feeding and going through as a beyond beginner. I love all the tips and encouragement and the remainder of its normal to have all the different phases throughout this art journey along with the freedom to "practice" and learn in what ever way helps it click in your brain! As a visual learner, I need to see someone do it then it clicks, but also tracing also helps me learn the twist and bends of objects as a child I always felt like tracing was cheating and not ture art, but as an adult over the last few years; I find tracing to be the most invaluable tool and resource available! You ladies are wonderful and I'm so thankful to you both for sharing all your tips, tricks and knowledge of art with us on social media because for us visual learners it truly makes learning art possible, accessible and affordable!!! PS you'll be happy to know after 2 years of playing around with watercolor; I joined our small towns Christmas pop-up shop as a vendor and sold some of my painting. It's was scary, exciting and so much fun to see people's reactions to my work. Thank you for all your inspiration and encouragement to become an artist!

Extremely helpful and so interesting! I can truly benefit from painting more layers and not worrying so much about ruining the first good layer. That sketching doesn't need to be perfect is good to hear, since I am not good at sketching, at all. That we are allowed to trace - something that I started recently and it helps me so much! So true, that which isn't perfect, has something more in it sometimes. Re-drawing the lines is something I absolutely need to try. Thank you both so much!

I will definitely be looking for that workbook after christmas. I am a photo realistic animal artist with colored pencil and what I call colored pencil when I involve a solvent that allows it to flow like paint. However I am new to this watercolor journey and I would like to know how you do a glaze or second layer without pulling up too much of your first layer? I live in Phoenix Arizona where it's very dry and so paint dries very quickly. The climate here is probably also part of why I love honey watercolors as well not to mention I love the way they feel. I cannot wait to begin getting some m Graham paints and I'd like to know your opinion on them.
