The lion, known globally by the scientific name of Panthera leo is a lovely, tawny-coloured large cat that is found living in prides. The prides are usually composed of one to two males, several females, and cubs. They are carnivores and their favourite quarry is the buffalo. They have retractable claws. The job of the males is to patrol the pride’s territory and keep unwanted intruders out. Male lions have a mane. Territories are marked by scent markings and scratches on trees. Adult males communicate with a series of roars, chuffs, and grunts amongst other sounds.
Like all cats lions have excellent night vision. They have well-developed canine teeth for gripping. They use carnassial shears and incisor teeth for cutting.
Lionesses produce 1-6 cubs at a time. A female who is pregnant will quietly remove herself from the pride when she is ready to give birth, and remains with the cubs until they are ready to be safely introduced to the rest of the pride and can keep up with the pride when they are on the move through the bushveld. It is never advisable to come between a lioness and her cubs as their instinct to protect their helpless cubs is very strong. Lionesses are very good mothers and are fairly tolerant of the rambunctious antics of their offspring. Male lions on the other hand are not very patient, but will humor the cubs if they are in a playful or relaxed mood.
The lions found in the Lowveld of South Africa are a special group, or subspecies known as Panthera leo krugeri.
Did you know?
Did you know that male lions sleep for an incredible 18-20 hours per day? Lionesses on the other hand sleep for only 15-18 hours per day. The reason is that female lions are dedicated parents who need to take care of their cubs and also are in charge of hunting for the pride. Lionesses really are the animal moms who do it all.
Fun facts!
A fun fact is that the Zulu name for lion is “Ngonyama” which literally means “eater of meat.” The lions are the first to eat, followed by the females, and lastly the cubs.
