+Gargi Chakravorty So true! Hilarious that it was finally Elinor who got a reaction out of him.

Elinor's gratefulness in this version elevate's her performance even higher, Joanna David is the best Elinor Dashwood i've ever seen.

24 years later, Joanna David played Mrs Gardner in Pride and Prejudice, and her daughter Susannah Harker played Jane Bennett.

Actually, Susannah Harker is the daughter of Polly Adams and Richard Owens - Owens is the Colonel in this version of S&S. Joanna's daughter is Emilia Fox. The role Joanna and her daughter Emilia shared was the unnamed "second Mrs. de Winter" lead in Rebecca. Joanna played that role opposite Jeremy Brett (the best version), and later, Emilia played it opposite Charles Dance (a so-so version)..

I never saw the appeal if Willoughby. He only regrets what happened with Ms. Williams because he lost his inheritance, not because he left her with their child and her life in ruins. He toyed with Marianne's affections in the beginning, and then threw her away in favor of a fortune. And he calls Elinor harsh for not buying his bs apologies. Why are readers swooning over this tool? Give me a Colonel Brandon any day!

Willoughby in his apologies and attempts at self reproof always seems to shift into putting the blame on someone else. That is until he is called on those attempt. Then he in an attempt to curry favor admits it once more. Still in spirit it is evident that he will never accept accountability for his own actions and will go through life always putting the blame on someone else.

Agreed, but also, lets not forget that he was also counting on Elinor to be as harsh and judgemental about Colonel Brandon' s niece behavior, in those days the morals were so tight on women that even an innocent change of letters between a single woman and a gentleman would be cause for a lost reputation on the lady's part. So Elinor's reaction was quite uncharacteristic of the society and times. ( not so long ago this was still seen as worse than death for a single girl )A pregnancy was enough for a girl to be outcast and to be labeled as a prostitute .What he saw as a good argument and one that he used on his circle for sure, was lost on her and he was smart enough to realise it. In fact if not for Brandon and Sir Middleton and Mrs Jennings kind and benevolent behavior through the whole story ,Marianne's reputation would have been lost too because of her sending him letters, driving unchaperoned in his carriage and visiting his aunt's house just the two of them.

There really is nothing positive about Mr. Willowby, outside of being a great horseman and hunter. This visit to see or justify himself to the Dashwood sisters is an affront to his wife. Once he married her, other attachments should go. He has no business expecting Marianne to be a third and regardless of her personality, his wife should come first. As a side note, the hairdos in this clip are beyond believable. Here they are, worn out and worried sick, and their hair is made up to perfection! Funny!

John Willoughby broke Marianne Dashwood heart who he is really in love with and she was really in love with for a rich wife and social status but I don't believe he lived happily ever after and Marianne marry Colonel John Brandon who loves her and she came to love him live hopefully happy ever after.

This Colonel seems to be gradually becoming slightly less unattractive throughout the movie. But I have been spoiled forever by the more magnificent Brandons-- the humble and noble (Alan Rickman) and the sexycreepy (David Morrissey). This Marianne is awful. But Elinor and Edward are quite decent and Hyacinth--um, Mrs. Jennings--is hilarious! I'm pleasantly surprised by this antiquated production.

You are very harsh in your moral judgements....words every narcissicist will throw out at a critic when their self centredness is exposed in all its evil.....Austen ever respected the objective nature of moral law for humanity and its true progress....she was NEVER fooled by subjective value judgements alone....

I always like Willoughby very much. It's so sad that he and Marianne would never come together.

Die Welt von Jane Austen what is there to like about a man who gets a young girl pregnant, plays with another's emotions, and marries a third for her money? And takes no responsibility for his actions? Men like him still exist today, they are called deadbeats.

Willoughby could of opted for a life of poor and happy rather than rich and wretched. Shame Jane Austin didn't put any of her women in Willoughby's position, never mind though, never mind.

I love this version and have thoroughly enjoyed watching it over a few nights. Prior to this I watched the 1981 version and it is beyond awful. Poor acting and costumes.

Willoughby is a truly pitiful character. He is unable to own up to the consequences of his own actions no matter the person. He didn't take responsablitity for his lovechild and he doesn't take it for his behaviour towards Mary Anne. It's simply his Go-To-Solution to blame it on anything and everything BUT himself. But i DO believe he loved her to a certain degree. Allthough i think his showing up and asking about her well being, is more about absolving himself from an unfamiliar feeling of guilt than anything else. He is a selfish jerk. But a selfish jerk who fell in love.

Could someone kindly explain to me why was something W said about the composition of the letter to Marianne so bad for his wife according to Elinor? I thought he actually praised his wife's style.

I see you wrote this a year ago. But I think Elinor took issue with W's letter to Marianne because it was cold and unfeeling and calculated to hurt, whatever his wife's style in dictation and composition. I think when W praises his wife's hand in its writing, he does so with a note of irony which is why he seems almost to laugh. That's just my opinion, though.
