This production is, hands down in my opinion, the best overall Emma. For me, directing Ms. Beckinsale to portray Emma as more determined and self-assured than as flighty and impulsive is the key to the overall quality. And including Mr. Strong as her counterpoint makes the duality of their dynamic stand out. Supporting cast members are almost perfect.

This is the best version of Emma and closest to the book. Best actors, too. The others don't compare...and Emma wasn't blonde, either.

I so agree with you. I'm fed up of blonde Emmas and brunette Harriets. They got it right here.
@ralphstephan3534 жыл бұрын
I agreed with the exception of Mark Strong. He’s an excellent actor but if it was up to me I’d substitute Jeremy Northam who’s a bit more transparent. Bernard Hepton is by far the best Mr. Woodhouse with Michael Gambon not too far behind.

This is my favourite Emma. Among many other things, the age discrepancy between Emma and Mr. Knightly looks right.

I don't know, they seem to be trying too hard to make him appear 'old'. I find the actor to be a quite unfitting choice, to be honest.
@samhart42054 жыл бұрын
@@reasonablyserious There's quite an age gap, and considering Emma isn't a teenager anymore but in her twenties, he's on par. The Knightleys in the recent times look and act, too young.
@reasonablyserious4 жыл бұрын
@@samhart4205 16 years, so he's at max 40 years old. I agree often times actors chosen are too young and/or good looking, but the other extreme isn't better (like in Sense and Sensibility 1995 -- where the captain looks at least double the claimed age)

On the contrary, this is the most accurate and authentic of the versions of "Emma," much closer to the book. If it seems less so now it is because our society is so very different.

It also looks to me well-balanced and tasteful. All characters are well spelled out unlike the american version of the same year, where Jane Fairfax only says a few words. Great production overall.

It's a beautiful, detailed production that embodied all of Austen's societal values. You feel the time period in this adaptation, very much.
@lizclegg75564 жыл бұрын
Its a great adaptation, with the characters (except for John Knightley who is a bit too good humoured in this, and maybe Harriet who is a bit too intelligent in this) and scenes very true to the novel. With the Romolai Garai version and the car crash 2020 version, you wonder whether the writer, director and actors had ever read the book.

@@lizclegg7556 as far as book accuracy goes, you Emma fans are spoiled rotten. You have so many relatively close to the source versions to nit pick over, so that you can call any version not a hundred percent to your view of the book bad, but think for a moment what we Mansfield Park fan girls go through! It's either the tv equivalent of a stage play or a messy movie with no loyalty to the source whatsoever. We haven't got our true version yet.

About to finish the book and this one is still my favorite Emma. I know some people prefer the one with Gwyneth Paltrow or Romola Garai (which are decent in my eyes). This one has something special about it.

I would love to see a version of Emma, told through the eyes of the Coles (new would-be gentry), the Perrys (apothecary), and the Martins (prosperous tenant farmers of Knightley). I strongly recommend "In Defense of Mrs Elton" by Diana Birchall.

This is quite a good version of the story. I think Kate Beckinsale made a good Emma. I don’t think that Mark Strong was a good Mr. Knightley though.

My mind is still so full of the 2009 version, that this seems all wrong to me! Especially the parting scene between Mr. Knightly & Emma, that was so much better done in the 2009 than the awkward set here.

+혜림 my dear Hyerim, I think you should read the original novel of Jane Austen, then will understand the difference between the one of 2009 and this one.

The 2009 was beautifully shot, but it seemed like an unbalanced adaptation. Unsure, what to do with it's main character. Emma came off as bipolar sometimes. Yikes.

Emma 2009, is shot in warm colours and the palette is generally spring/summer. Not exactly accurate or layering except for the fact it was beautiful to see.

The Romolai Garai version never shows Emma becoming a real adult. She is still acting like a silly little girl at the end of it. There were many excellent things in that version, but it fails crucially in showing Emma's final development.

I hope Emma was a much better deserving person of Mr. Knightly in the book. Her acting was quite ok, it was her character that disgusted me throughout the entire movie. Worst Jane Austen movie I've ever seen. Mr. Knightly did not deserve her at all. I really hope the book is better because this was just plain awful. Not a happy ending for me at all, except the marriage of Mr. And Mrs. Martin. 😏

You must not have seen the 2020 version yet. Now there's a mean girl for sure! Ugh! And a stupid twit of a Harriet as well. Please, please read the book. Read it slowly and let the Austen's real characters reveal themselves. Jane Austen knew how to write a girl who could be self deluded, etc and still loveable. Growing up is a series of painful mistakes but she does learn and grow. Jane Austen never lets Emma off the hook for the pain she causes others and she suffers for it.
@lizclegg75564 жыл бұрын
@@cs3742 Well I'm not sure Emma is ever sufficiently punished by Austen for what she does to Farmer Martin. Luckily everything turns out for the best. However, I agree that in the 2020 version Emma is a bitch. Which is a major failure, because if there is one thing Emma is not, she is not a bitch.

@@lizclegg7556 i haven't seen 2020's Emma so i can't comment on that. I will say that in the book Emma isn't exactly a bitch but she is one hell of a snob. Kind of can't wait to see how that's made worse in the 2020 Emma.
