Every year tourists visit the canyons of the Southwest and don't realize that flash flooding is one of the most common ways to die out here. The waters come roaring down and high speeds and are full of projectiles. It can be sunny and clear where you are hiking but raining only a few miles away and you get washed away. Finding pants in the tree is a sure sign that they were hit by high waters and drowned and are now covered by mud.

when I visited Hawaii for 6 weeks, I used to go hiking up to waterfalls. That being said, there are signs everywhere warning of what could happen with rain. I was always keeping an eye and ear out. Maybe signs?

Wow. I had no idea the floods can be that bad, that fast. I'm from the mountains in Canada, where sudden snow will get you in winter, avalanche etc. Im always amazed that ppl get caught that way. I suppose the locals always know their area. If the pants were in a tree, you are saying the flash floods would get that high? Or I guess the trees may bend a bit because of current and bring the tops down a bit lower. Crazy

Did it say if they were found near a flash flood basin, or if they were hanging on a tree, etc Do we know what the condition of the SXS was in? Was it untouched? Or showed obvious signs of being swept away in a flood? The news and media are baiting the audience with ambiguous updates

@@bbreezy2060 I would, clothes weigh you down when wet. If I ended up in the middle of a body of water, l'm ditching my pants and shoes. Both will slow me down and take extra effort to swim with.

I'm not trying to sound rude or disrespectful but if they have rings or metal on them you might want to get metal detectors because floods do have a tendency to bury things and my deepest condolences I hope they make it out alive but if they don't again my deepest condolences to the family. We'll definitely keep them in my prayers.

With that huge volume of water they could have easily been washed into the Colorado river - which is only 12 miles away. This would be about a 20 minute trip or less with raging waters..

Almost happened today to us at Bryce Canyon. We watched for weather but it blew up. Hail and our path was flooded. Once we finally got to the jeopardy the roads were washed out. Thank God for 4/wheel. At the end of the road we realized they had closed it. I wonder before they closed it if they knew we were up there. It was scary to say the least.

I agree I never seen a flsh flood in moab but in Zions national park yes and capital reef yes and cider city has had flooding but never heard not one in moab utah pretty scary I saw the storm on the news it looked very scary so seeing their stuff in the tree tells me something bad happened to both of them or one of them I hope they are found

Can we say out of nowhere is complete false. Here in AZ UTAH NEW MEXICo and Nevada we all get really unpredictable monsoons during this season. Last year a girl did the same thing here in az off the trails and on the trails and was swept away. Praying they are found safe

Cold rain and night time, plus flooding, possibly got hypoxia being to cold and stripped off clothing, or floods ripped clothing off, bad deal either way and hope they some how survived the ordeal.

I'm sure that these people were experienced outdoors types, but sometimes it's these people in their late 50s or 60s, they think that they're still as agile as they were 15-20 years earlier, and they believe in themselves a little bit too much, that they can read the weather and the forecast and convince themselves that "we got this" , they hopelessly rely on their instincts, but we are reading too many of these incidents of hikers and backpackers in their 50s and 60s and 70s who go out for too strenuous of a hike or climb or jog or excursion and they pass away in the mountains or desert, it's too bad

There are many options: He took his pants off to help his wife bc he couldn’t swim with them. He took the off to throw to her to help but didn’t make it and got caught. He left it worried someone wouldn’t look for them so he wanted someone to find that they had been there. You don’t know if he was in a smart or scared state mentally.

Not that kind of trail. They were driving a UTV a two-person ATV, which got washed 3/4 mile by the flash flood. But, yeah, let's go off trail, and not remember the way back, and be "looking, looking, looking," for the way back.

Where the pants thrown in the tree like from rushing Waters or were they folded and hung up on a tree like he was trying to dry them? Because if they were hung neatly they could be still out there somewhere. But if they were all muddy and in distress perhaps they are not okay. I hope they are found.
