"This is my type of song" That's what made Metallica. You can't deny the talent and the ability they had to convey feeling through their music. It's math meets emotion in a perfect storm. No one really listens to them and doesn't feel something. They're to metal what NWA is to rap I think. No one will ever be them.

I love how heavy and melancholy the first half of the song is simultaneously. The Song evolves. Feels like the first half is the first act of a story of man who's seen some shit in the war and came home and committed by his family to a Sanitarium to get better. He's sedated and miserable, slowly he becomes more acclimated and while he's playing along, he's not resigned. Then he slowly adapts and the big change comes with the line: "They think our heads are in their hands, but violent views bring violent plans. Keep him tied, it keeps him well. He's getting better, cant you tell?" I think this is where the patient is going mad and planning out violence against those keeping him restrained. Then right after that, the song changes to be very aggressive, citing "Mutiny's in the air" and "Got some Death to do." I think the song changes because he's fighting back. "Kill is such a friendly word... Seems the only way of reaching out again." The end of the song, he's in fight or flight mode, he's convinced he's either going to break free or die trying.. I love this song, and feel its telling a story.

It's really cool to watch people who are quite a bit younger than I am react to bands that I grew up with back in the day. This is one of my top five Metallica songs overall and it comes from an incredible album that was the first metal recording selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry.

Imagine this is what you worshipped while growing up abx the memories it brings back now that my old ass is in my 50s!! This was so incredible to play over and over when I was in my teens/20s! Glad it's getting the props it deserves. Thank you for giving it the platform it deserves!!!

I completely agree with your assessment of the intro. There’s something stark, yet cinematic about it. Kirk’s opening solo sets the mood perfectly. Going out the same way they came in would have been great too, but I like how the song gets almost whimsical-sounding just before the end. They still play it live these days. Great reaction as always!
