Dick Enberg and Hot Rod Hundley calling the game. Hot Rod Hundley worked for CBS, TVS and the Phoenix Suns in the early 1970s. He went on to be the radio-tv voice of the New Orleans and Utah Jazz for 35 years. They are both missed. RIP.

UCLA's first loss since January 23, 1971 which was against Notre Dame. Just like in football, Notre Dame was the bookend of the longest unbeaten streak in college basketball.

I was at this game. I hugged Bill Ryan when we won. First time I recall hugging another guy not in my family.

Well, this video sure captured all the highlights of that game -- from an L.A. perspective. The Bruins up by about 10 all the way. A few little details of the final minutes left off, but so what? UCLA never lets leads like that get away from 'em! :)

There’s about 4 minutes of this game left off, that haunt Bill Walton to this day. He’s never gotten over this game!

Being a senior undefeated in college following two undefeated years in high school, he had impossibly high standards for his sense of satisfaction. As thrilling as it was for me to see this win (I was 15), and as much as I still enjoy watching replays of this historic game, I feel sorry for Bill. He is so much like many friends I’ve had that I’ve always thought of him as being like a friend. My friendly advice to Bill Walton would be: forgive yourself for a few minutes of misfortune in the game. Take stock of your myriad accomplishments.

TVS was a godsend for us college b-ball fans in the 70's. I remember getting a Maryland-UCLA game at 10:00pm on a Saturday and Maryland almost pulled it off. It was during the streak. I would draw out the bracket every year and this was when it was 25 to 32 teams. We would get a double header the Saturday it started and be grateful for it.

Eddie Einhorn and Digger Phelps had some back room deals, whereby on signal from Einhorn, Phelps would blow up at the refs, even if it meant getting a technical foul. It was to keep the viewers engaged.

Walton's passing at 15:17 and 18:56 looks like previews of the Portland Trailblazers NBA title in 1977. The outlet pass to spark the fast break and the high post pass to the back door cutter. Those are what Walton did so well.

As an Indiana resident who was still in a state of euphoria over the first game, I watched that re-match, which started at 11:30 pm our time, as I recall. A nice predictable way to relax late at night by watching a Bruin scrimmage.

@johnm8096 bullshit. Bruins were up 11 at 3 minute mark with no shot clock and no 3 pointer. Walton himself said worst L ever.

@@caesarfiorini1728 It’s true that ND finished on an 11-0 run and Walton missed a potential game winner in the final seconds. However, Walton has spoken many times about the NC State game being the most painful loss of his entire basketball (not just college) career. This was a made for tv regular season game that was part of a home-and-home series. UCLA beat ND handily in the rematch the following Saturday. How can you compare that to a 2OT national semifinal loss in which UCLA blew a late lead? Furthermore, it marked the end of Walton’s UCLA career. On top of that, it meant the end of UCLA’s streak of seven consecutive national championships. Adding to the disappointment, UCLA beat NC State by 18 earlier in the season. Not even close.

@@caesarfiorini1728 Ok, I’d like to see that. Check out his autobiography, Back From the Dead. He rips Tommy Curtis (mainly because he took playing time away from his best friend, Greg Lee) and goes on and on about the NC State game. To be honest, Curtis was instrumental in both losses, but Bill blames himself as well. It clearly haunts him to this day. Knowing Bill’s public persona, it’s not unusual for him to exaggerate and even contradict himself.
