The KTM 500 EXC is rally-inspired, where the 450 RFR is a pure rally bike straight from the factory.
A quick video showing a few of the differences between the two completely different bikes.
There is a huge price difference, would that make you decide, or maybe you want to build it your way, what do you say?

Fascinating as always. I can't thank you enough for the knowledge base you've created over the years. Particularly useful IMHO is your focus on attitude, mindset and planning over gear and bling. I'm still at the 640 with Deutch plugs stage (30 liter tank), but any bike will do as long as you can fix it in the bush - (Or take the 24 hr trip to civilization)

Good stuff as always. Sold my 21 500 and getting ready to do a build (sort of) on a 22 next month. In the last year I’ve raced MX and Hare Scrambles on two different bikes. Going to do a one bike fits all build for what I like to do. It will include dual sport riding, GP races, hare scrambles and a couple of desert races. Don’t travel on it so won’t lean in that direction. Take care all.

Super helpful - thanks Paul - 1st review I’ve seen of the comparisons. Trying to find a 450 Rally is the hard bit - like rocking horse 💩

great vids Paul thanx. 2 questions.. did u notice a difference with the Hinson clutch?? The skid toolbox... is it worth it. seems dirty!

Man those rally bikes are nuts. It’s really cool to see them side by side. I just put out a 500exc review on my KZfaq page yesterday, would love to hear your input on the build that Mike did for his bike.

Anything bigger than my FE501 is just too big IMO. Love it, and it cruises well on the highway and allows me to handle the rough terrain. See guys all the time with bloated bikes that they can barely handle off the pavement. Cracks me up.

What you do is awesome and inspiring. Is the KTM the best bike so far for what you do? How do your past bikes rate? If you could only stick with one from now on what would it be?

The 500 makes a ton of sense for a lot of stuff, I have a 690 with the 450 RFR tanks and tower. I find it's the "unicorn" bike for me and my adventures but to each their own. Each bike is fully capable of doing just about anything you would want to do on an adventure bike.

Got mate with the same setup but the husky 701 great bike done a 6000km trip threw the centre of Australia with my on a loaded 1290SAR.

That is interesting. The 450 rfr parts fit the 690? The frames are very much alike. Can I mount a 500exc engine in the 690 frame? I prefer the exc engine over the lc4

@oliverrosenkrantz2670 it's called the Basel Quest rally kit, allows for mounting the RFR parts onto a 690.

Not much talk about what is the REALLY big difference between the two. Wheelbase and head tube angle, the rally reclipa has a bigger wheelbase and a slack fork, both making a big difference in the feeling of the bike, tha rally beeing so much more stable and predictable at high speed open trail.

I think important difference is also airbox and airfilter location. If I remember correctly rally has it under the seat sitting higher and better protected from environment. Exc has it on the side for easy maintenance and its a bit lower which can be a bit problem during water crossings.

Interesting that you added the extra fuel tank to the left rear of the bike. I’d like to know how the bike feels when carrying the extra weight of the rear tank when full? When both tanks have fuel in them does the rear tank take precedence over the front tank?

Not really noticeable. The rear tank has its own valve so I can control flow as I want.

Thanks for this. The RFR is fascinatingly slender. What do you think the rational is for low vs high exhaust? Also, can you show us how you set up the laggard on your exc? Looks like you have a purpose built metal bracket. Cheers.

Part of the reason for the lower Exhaust on the FRF is about keeping some of the heat away from that rear fuel tank.

Did you have to extend the cables for your speedo in order to fit it on the tower? Was thinking of doing the same on mine.

I suppose the 5L rally tank on your 500 is from RebelXSports? Did you consider their 14.5L rear tank or do you have a general opinion on it?
