The lower Heim joint at the bottom of the shock absorber on the 690 Enduro and other bikes is vulnerable to a lot of dust, dirt, and water ingress because of it's exposed location. Once the seals and/or bearing are worn or damaged, they should be replaced. I discovered it's a fairly simple job, with no special tools required - even though the 690 makes it somewhat difficult to remove the shock from the bike because of having to partially remove the fuel tank.
