If it’s a copper washer re-use it. Just anneal it, you can do it 6-10 times. Propane torch, red hot, drop it in water…good to go. All British head gaskets used to be made of copper until it became too expensive. I’d re-use Triumph and Norton head gaskets 10 times easy without ever having a problem.

the 2 oil screens can be cleaned with some brake kleen and re used.. check the o rings, replace if need. no need to buy the KTM branded 100.00 oil change kit every time, saves you about 50% on the cost of changes. careful when overfilling the 690, countershaft seals are a known weak point and have increased failure rates when over full on oil.

Thanks for the great video. I'm about to do my 690s first service. IMO, changing the o-rings and washers is typically unnecessary. Great video. I watched this before I do an oil change on my 2021 KTM 690 enduro. However, I found one thing in the video that should be addressed. The oil you used (Power Synt) is not recommended for the 690. Cross Power is what Motorex recommends for big single cylinder bikes like the 690. Power Synt is what I put in my 890 Duke R and Cross Power goes in the 690. That’s what Motorex says anyway. Don’t shoot the messenger.

Hello my friend. Meanwhile, I inform you that in 2018 the production of the SMC has been suspended by KTM: so are you talking about the 2019 version, or the 2016 version like the one you see in the video that coincides with the 2017 version?

@torquemasters97
@torquemasters97 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the previous precision but my attention to detail is fundamental to understand deeply and if possible provide a solution. In this case, honestly, I never saw or heard of someone who did it. I am aware of cases where the rev counter and the display of the 2016 version have been replaced with the display of the Duke 690. Having said that, unfortunately I am not aware of specific real cases of what you are asking me. I can tell you I'm not absolutely sure what I'm saying but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a good chance of doing it. But I want to emphasize the difficulty linked to the limit of the physical space, which on the 701 does not exist for such a large lap counter (associated with the display). So I think that most likely from the point of view of physical spaces, there are major changes to be made (admitted and granted that it is possible to successfully connect and interface the components). In this regard, to be sure you should ask a mechanic / engineer or other competent people who know the components of both thoroughly to make a final decision. I hope I have been at least minimally helpful with this answer.

Why are there so many filters in the 690
@torquemasters97
@torquemasters97 4 жыл бұрын
There are many reasons but the upstream reason that justifies their presence is the fact that the engine, to be built around the concept of low weight combined with the fact that it is a single cylinder, forces the engineers to resort to alternative solutions other than those adopted on the classic four, two cylinder engines etc. With this type of solution it is possible to respect the objective of "little weight" but obviously the life of the engine will be considerably reduced.

@@camilleliford The rule would be to change it (the manufacturer declares it). My opinion is that it depends on what you have to do. For example, I always change it personally, but you can also check the state of wear and decide whether to change it or not. I always change it and keep all payment receipts so that if I have to sell it, I can prove to the buyer that I did everything perfectly. However, in the meantime, I suggest you buy it individually, then compare them and decide what to do. If you don't use it, it will stay for next time.

The seeger plier shouldn't be necessary for this but the stupid things have a concave indent with nothing to grab onto, you can try to use two thin pieces of anything like chopsticks but it's a total pain in the ass to pull the filters out, he gets lucky in this video because that is a smooth surface on the inside of that filter ring, nothing to grab onto really. I sat for almost an hour trying to figure out a way to do it, then I just drilled a hole in it to grab it and yank it out.

Here you are. As usual I can't go to sleep without the expert who comes to make the usual statement: fill the oil filters before inserting them. I'll tell you one thing: you made a mistake. Filters do not necessarily have to be filled. If it were a fundamental thing it should be written in the use and maintenance book. Now tell me: do I have to listen Mattighofen's engineers or do I have to do as a guy says on KZfaq (you)? What you see is what KTM suggests to do, and not what I suggest. So those who want to fill the oil filters are free to do so, but you can very well avoid doing without being afraid of any damage. I emphasize it: if it were a relevant thing KTM would have written it in the use and maintenance manual. Why do you think KTM didn't write it?

Why put drain plug back in before changing filters ?? You probably end up with 1/4 litres of old oil in sump .

People often have their ears open to what "others" say on KZfaq or the Internet in general. The procedure that must be followed in this case (and it is the procedure that we report in the video) is stated by the manufacturer in the vehicle use and maintenance book. People are free to do as the manufacturer says, or do as "someone" says on the internet.

Which steps are absolute necessary for every oil change? Seems too complicated and costly
@torquemasters97
@torquemasters97 3 жыл бұрын
Doing it without going to a mechanic already has its economic advantages. But if you want to save further you could for example buy a cheaper oil than the one we used (25 € \ l). There are oils for 13 € \ l. Another way to save is to skip the oil and filter change, but I don't recommend it, especially on this bike.

This is way too much stuff for an oil change. Are all modern supermoto and/or dirt bike this much of a pain in the ass?
@torquemasters97
@torquemasters97 3 жыл бұрын
The case concerning this specific bike is particular but generally for most supermotos it is worse from the point of view of the frequency of these works, the general maintenance and its costs.

You forgot to do 2 things: 1 warm up the engine before the oil change it becomes more liquid and leaves less residues, 2 put oil in the new filters before installing them it prevents damaging the filter at the first start due to the oil pressure
@torquemasters97
@torquemasters97 4 жыл бұрын
With all due respect: bullshits. First of all, you haven't read the video directions from the beginning. Second: putting oil in the filters is absolutely not necessary.

WTF??!! TWO OIL FILTERS AND TWO OIL SCREENS???!!! No wonder they don't sell much. There's no need in this UNIVERSE to design a thumper with more than one oil filter. Shit, this is worse than a Ducati! Can you say 'Break down much?' ! If I were that bike I'd feel violated!

Hahaha, trust me they sell them. They will probably have some more difficulties given the competition from the new Ducati which is probably better for the same price. The KTM smc is still iconic :)
