No motorbike is without issues and this is certainly true for a brand new production model, however the KTM 790 Adventure seems to have had a few more issues and problems than other bikes. From oil leaks, to coolant leaks to the TFT not being waterproof the 790 Adventure will probably be proble free in 2021, after the first year of production in China.

Went to the KTM dealers yesterday in France & was told only 500 790 adventure r were allocated to Europe. None available until next year.

Yes, I just got mine 6-19-19. I wanted one of the one's made at KTM Austria and not China so I decided to buy a first year bike. I haven't seen any of the problems yet on my bike that have been described here and elsewhere (it's early yet). My only complaint about this new bike, actually applies to virtually all new bikes and that is that the accessories needed for the bike are ether not available, sold out or take a year before you can buy them. Case in point, I have to order a hard case mounting plate from Belgrade, Serbia and then purchase the Givi hardware from Amazon to be able to mount my Monokey hard case on the bike. I would have never know about this workaround if I hadn't seen it on KZfaq. Go to Givi's website and look for the KTM 790 Adventure adapter plate for their hard case, you won't find one. I'll stop bitching now, I'm very happy that I was able to get one of the 2019 KTM 790 Adventure R. BTW I did hear that all of the 790 motors will continue to be built in Austria, even if the bike assembly goes to China.

Gear shift lever screws, TFT shutting itself off, sub-frame screws were tighten to much (the thread broke while trying to unscrew them), fuel gauge going crazy from time to time (especially when parking bike on the hill), the left-hand side buttons and the heated grips button got stuck from dirt after diving with the bike in the swamp (they are not proper IPxx apparently) and the chain lube "leak" that got me scared. I did 7000km so far and the bike handles and rides GREAT so I'm happy overall with it since so far everything I report gets replaced fast at the dealer. But that said I would not recommend this bike to someone that is not from the era that you had to take care of your motorcycle and wants something that is completely maintenance-free.

that tank derbies I never understand, how hard it is to make it right??? almost all adventure bike from ktm are having this issues leading to fuel pump failure! for such chunk of money I would expect more damn it.

Mine had Tank, gear lever and coolant issue. Thanks to proactive FB investigation and Eric‘s FAQ, I was able to hand the dealer a copy of the FAQ to get it right before handover :-) No issue during operation. Very happy Customer and Adventure Rider

GSs engine is being manufactured in china , but the bike's assembly place is the factory in Berlin

One issue that many owner have, as I do as well, is leakage of the front break reservoir

Great well balanced reporting. I just went out to my shed and realised that I don’t own a 790 so I shouldn’t be effected by these issues. Look forward to next time ✊🏻

So far, so good, only 550 miles, gas gauge does indee seem a little wonky, gear case is a little notchy, but I'm thinking with some more miles and full synthetic oil it will smooth out. I did notice a little oil on the lower gasket when I just got it, no dripping, just moist, I wiped it off and it never came back. Time will tell, but one thing is for sure, I love this bike!

Had my 790 for a couple of months and happy to report that I haven’t had any of the issues reported. Enjoy your reports but now I need a new torque wrench because mine doesn’t have nano meters😜

So not to long ago I mentioned waiting a couple years before buying the 790 umm well I bought probably one of the only ones left in the eastern US. “Bax Bike” is my new 790 ADV R. Only at 140 miles and no issues yet.

My 2019 790 adventure had an oil leak on the 600 mile break in service. This was a result of a bad crank shaft seal. Replaced by the dealer without any issue, So far... I'm still waiting on the completion of my service one week later.

Heard today that KTM has stated that the 790 adventure will NOT be built in china after all. Time will tell.

I've only had mine for two weeks, but I do have over 700 miles on it and so far no problems at all. One minor issue - sometimes neutral is hard to find. Reminds me of my Ducati's.

Same here, false neutrals, a little difficult to find neutral, I'm thinking it needs to break in, only 550 miles so far.

Ktm 790 will be manufactured in Austria for 2020 at least. After that is unclear if it will be moved to China or India or it may remain in Austria. So, the best year for 790 is 2020 and the first batch it will be available in late 2019.

given that (1) some of the issues are not unique to the 790Adv but exist across most ktm bikes (see oil leaks/engine cases), (2) it is a real turn off to "contact your dealership" more than once for a brand new bike, and (3) some of the alternatives (hopefully) don't suffer from so many issues....then, maybe...just maybe....Tenere 700????? :-) :-) :-)

T700 has issuess of her own (exhaust placement, sidestand switch, easy to bend handlebar mount, leaking forks, shock leverage exposed) .... basically like any other modern bike

i have a 790 S. and the first start in the morning looks a problem. needs 3 trys to be on. I just discover if i wait a lot before start the engine it will start great ( like waiting 40 seconds)

I have a 2019 BMW F850GSA. I took it on a 30,000 ride from Miami to Thailand the day after I picked it up... Not one issue. Zero. The bike worked flawlessly -- only needed a service and tires. BMW's are hassle free -- and I have been around the world on R1200GSA's. I'm looking at a KTM to go from Miami to South Africa on my next trip to save 100 pounds -- and I'm scared shitless. KTM is not BMW... Not even close. You travel in the world and 95% of adventure riders drive BMW for a reason. Still, I'm reading and hoping KTM can get their act together. I'm scared.

My cam chain started making a bunch of noise at 4200 miles so it’s now sitting in the garage to take to the dealer it’s a 2019 so it’s out of warranty and six months ago the oldest stopped up in the clutch basket and ate fried the clutch.

Seen the GSA in that colour scheme bring tear to my eye... But let's get to the meat of the matter, it's not thet there are problem, it's how the brand are responding to it. So if it's a matter, it leaks oil, no problem we'll fix it, and here a courtesy bike. it's super. But what if the Brand (or to be precise the Mechanic who rappresent the Brand) don't whant to recocnize the problem and fix it? (Yes i'm in the middle of a shitstorm with BMW), ok the basic problem and how to fix them (or if there was a recall) but more important is, is there a mechanic who can fix the problem that you didn't create under warrany?

Frankly all these issues are quite minor. Won't take a whole lot for KTM corporate to button all this up. It's not like a recall to replace half a gearbox.

No competition, 790 is leagues above the tenere, all these things are little compared to the whole picture.5 gallons of gas, 20 more hp, fully adjustable, 9.5 inch travel WP suspension, bolt on sub frame, twin 310mm brakes.....you can have your tenere......

That's what happens when your adventurous and try new bikes , engines , models , concepts etc ! You have issues ! It comes with trying ! It's much easier to use an engine that's been around for decades and risk nothing , and end up with the same bike year after year with a few modifications 😔😔😔

I am surprised you didn't bag on the tinderbox issue (a.k.a. crap slot), which has a tendency to collect debris which, if flamable, can be ignited by the exhaust header. If you own a 790 adv, buy a crap flap!

Ha! I had a discussion about the 790 and T7 on reddits r/motorcycle sub and I said that Japanese manufacturers and generally more reliable than European manufacturers and a few guys with orange koolaid on their lips attacked me, said I didn't know what I was talking about and that KTM is very reliable... Statistics say otherwise.

KTM love to highbrow it over the Japanese but their quality control boss must have a shitload of dirt on KTM’s CEO otherwise his or her’s arse would have been kicked to the curb years ago. How many fuckups can you have with wth these bikes until you start taking it seriously. The new adventure 790 is the latest in a long line of bikes released well before even the most basic of problems were sorted out. ‘KTM .. Rebel’s without a Clue’
