My 2020 KTM 300 XC-W TPI began running really poorly quite suddenly. After pulling my hair out for weeks, I discovered a pretty simple fix. Before you spend a few hundred bucks at the dealership, try this out and see if it helps.

Wanted to pass along a sincere thank you for making this video. I have a 2020 300 XC-W TPI which I absolutely love and is the best single track bike I've ever owned. The nice crisp low RPM engine performance faded a few rides back, and I tried the typical first potential resolutions: new plug, new gas, re-flash of the ECU, online research, etc and had been almost convinced I needed a new map or a "Get ECU" (around $1000 component). After watching your video, I decided to try a replacement of the crankcase pressure sensor (around $50), and that nailed this rough running issue at low RPMs. Thanks much for taking the time to troubleshoot this issue, and to make a video so that others could learn. Your dealer you mention I’m this video is garbage. I’ve had this issue and took the bike the bike to my dealer. They put it on their computer and identified it easily. Great video!!

I believe I’ve got the same issue with my ‘21 300 XC-W. The bike only has 7 hrs on it. Will have to give this a try.

@Supermotive Since you are using the ELM OBDII reader with the Car Connection app you can view and record the live data of the Manifold Intake Pressure sensor. This should be your crankcase pressure sensor. I am curious to know how the readings would look compared to your new sensor. It could help develop a baseline s that people know when their particular sensor is failing. I have checked mine but I do not have a new one to compare it to as I don't think it's faulty at the moment. 2019 250 XC-W TPI

Yup, I've seen a couple of videos that even a new bike has a bad sensor from the dealer. Growing pains, still great bikes.

Another tip is to clean the hose between the head and sensor. They sometimes gunk up.

I have a 21 te 300 Had it in Moab which is 1,000’s of feet higher. Sat for a better part of this summer. Just fired it up and it won’t rev. Like it’s starving for fuel. Changed plug. Went through a long process of cleaning injectors. Still won’t run correctly. I assume I have found the correct video. I definitely learned something.

I'm assuming it was doing this when warm too? Try and idle adjustment screw - best $25 you can spend. I have a 2020 KTM 250 XC-W TPI and this made a huge difference for me.

My bike seems to have this problem…hopefully will diagnose it this week. Curious, what is everyone’s Start up and warm up procedure for these 2T TPI’s? People keep telling me to keep throttle active the whole time until radiator warm. However, a few people have said they just start the bike and idle for a few minutes then ride off. Or start and turn off, go get changed, come back start again and do a gentle ride to warm up. So confusing

Great video, a few people are talking about swapping the sensors to diagnose the problem but haven’t elaborated on what is involved. I’ve got 100hr on my 2018 300 EXC and this has just started to happen, I’ve cleaned the pipe and bits but still no good. I’ll swap the sensors tonight. Cheers from Ben in Canberra, Australia.

Great vid, had the same problem after 20 hrs, KTM dealer had no idea, told me KTM are aware of the problem but dont know what the cause is ??? I swapped the 2 sensors and problem solved !

I ride my 2022 300xcw TPI on the street as well. I’ve never tried to adjust the power valve and I thought that might be the problem but there is like no cruising. Either I’m on the pipe or not and when I’m not it feels broken up and choppy. Another problem is it seems like it doesn’t like to rev out. When it gets high in the band I feel like it breaks up. The bike has less than 50 hours on it. I’m going to try to mess with the power valve to see if that changes anything but after seeing this I think I might buy a sensor just to have it on hand in case the valve doesn’t fix the problem. Any opinions on the bike not reving out?

It really is disappointing. Seems like if they don’t see it on the scan, they don’t have a clue what to do next. Is the CCPS # the same on a 2020 300 XC as opposed to the XC-W? My 2020 XC sounds just like yours in the before clips. Thanks for making this!

Just checked a couple websites like this, and it appears yes. www.motosport.com/oem-parts/ktm/2020/300xc-tpi/lubricating-system?fam=engine You can double check by shining a flashlight on the sensor reading ambient pressure (throttle side of the bike). You should be able to see the part number printed on it, which will be 55641075000. Slavens is the only place that had it in stock when I bought mine. Everyone else was backordered to January.

Great info, thank you! Hope this is my fix. My gas mileage was suffering as well. Maybe because I had turned my idle up (idle screw mod) to try and clean up the bottom end.

@@SUPERMOTIVE got a gasgas 300 22' with 0hrs same problem i think i can call this a problem 😪🥺 it runs weird and it stalls very easy. I hope start working good after the 1st oil change might be clogged with metal residues since engine its new

Just a thought, send this video to your KTM dealer. Since they're a KTM only dealer and couldn't diagnose this well known problem. That's a good way for them to lose their Sponsor as a KTM Dealer. I used to do entire dealership repossessions for factories that got a bad rating with customers. It's fun taking their entire inventory, I always looked at their Google review to look for a trend. 2 semis pull up with a court order for their entire inventory, the prick dealers were treated accordingly.

KTM know full well theres a consistent issue with their tpi bikes. other people have been in talks with them and they just say "its a characteristic of the bike"

@@danhopkinson2811 it doesn't affect all of them and it's not always the CCPS. My son's 21 TE250i went bad at 6hrs or so I thought. Replaced it, didn't fix it. Got better but not crisp like it was new. Did the idle screw mod, helped but still not crisp. There's a leak inside the motor going to the hose that supplies the CCPS that in some cases is bad. Slavens found the crank position sensor bad on several. Asaand now KTM is offering a new ECU map called the 103 extreme. So it's kinda all over yet not all bikes are affected which is extremely frustrating.

Thanks for the video. There are several videos about the issue with the CCP sensor, but if its the same as the AAP, why only the first one fails on all those bikes? So csnyou help me out with these questions: - did yo change anything on the engine before the issue?(air bypass screw, power valve spring tension?). - did you try to "reset" the engine before doing anything? - how was inside the hose towards the CCP? - did you try to clean the CCP? - can you see the CCP and AAP readings using the OBDII? - and last, how do you know is the CCP and not the AAP? Hope you can help me with these doubts, thanks!

Q: did you change anything on the engine before the issue?(air bypass screw, power valve spring tension?) A: No, the engine was completely unmodified. After the first trip to the dealership, I was advised to give the power valve a couple 1/4 turns out. I tried this, but the issue was not resolved so I carefully reset it to the stock position before taking it back to the dealership. Q: did you try to "reset" the engine before doing anything? A: Yes, this was done by the dealer twice before I tried this fix. All parametric data was erased, and the reset procedure was performed. Q: how was inside the hose towards the CCP? A: The CCP hose was completely clear, no debris whatsoever. Q: did you try to clean the CCP? A: I did not; looking at the inlet hole there was no debris or blockage. Q: can you see the CCP and AAP readings using the OBDII? A: I actually did not look when I used the OBDII scanner, but I believe the answer is no. The diagnostic system the dealership uses did not identify the issue with the sensor, so I don't believe a regular OBDII scanner would be able to either. Q: and last, how do you know is the CCP and not the AAP? A: By swapping the sensors, you get a good idea of which of the sensors is faulty. When I swapped my original CCP and AAP, I found that my idle was behaving oddly, but while riding the bike felt normal. This indicated to me that the sensor being originally used for CCP was faulty, but the sensor being used for AAP was doing it's job. So my conclusion is that if there is low end bogging, the CCP is most likely to blame. If idle is inconsistent but there is no low end bogging, the AAP could be the problem. I don't really know why you hear about the CCP's going bad and not the AAP's. I think it's totally possible that people who's bikes won't idle without the air screw mod might just have a faulty AAP. Another possibility is the CCP's are experiencing higher pressures, and the sensor "wears out" faster. These are just guesses, I really don't know. Hope this helps.

@@SUPERMOTIVE It is possible to read the crankcase pressure sensor with your current hardware and app setup for future reference. It will be listed in the sensors list on car connection as intake manifold absolute pressure. This can be viewed as live data in sensors list, or trended on a chart. On 2018/19 bikes the CCP sensor will write a static value for the barometric pressure sensor on startup. On 2020/21 bikes the atmospheric air pressure sensor should reads this value continuously. You should be able to verify which sensor is reading correctly by comparing them to atmospheric pressure. Luckily most phones have this as an additional sensor. This can be found on Samsung Galaxies by dialing *#0*.

Crank case sensor is the one that went bad, swapped it with the ambient pressure which was good. They're the same part.

My 22 te150i is doing the same thing at 17hrs. Replaced both sensors, checked to make sure line to cylinder was not blocked. Still acts like a choke is on, runs horrible at part throttle.

@@katemason3776 Unfortunately I was unable to restore it to original running condition. Two husky/ktm dealerships billed me almost 800.00 in failed tuning attempts. Traded it in at the Yamaha dealership for a new yz250fx.

Were you using motorex oil? Apparently these KTM's and huskies can not take any other oil other than motorex. Their oil has a different viscosity, frequently causing issues with these TPI bikes.

I’ve used motorex in my 22’ TE300i since new. My sensor went bad within 10 hours. I’m replacing another one now at 68 hours. I ended up ordering the TokyoOffroad CCPS modified tray and his brass fitting. Hopefully will eliminate future issues.

My bike has 35 hours and I think that the CCPS is not working right. It's like it's coughing at low RPMs, especially for the first 5 minutes of the ride, after warming it up. Doesn't seem to be too bad as the bike gets hot and mid to full throttle, but at low RPMs it just seems ... weird.

@@bradleymuha4861 if your bike is excessively smoky, like white smoke out the tailpipe, and when you go full throttle it bogs out a bit, but otherwise runs ok then it's most likely the crank seal. The smoke is the giveaway though. These bikes should barely smoke at all. If there are clouds of smoke throughout the ride, it's the crank seal. I think the o-rings in there get cooked and then they do not seal. I think this is a more common problem with these than most people think, but it's not that hard to fix.

Dealerships in many states will plate a 2 stroke for you. All depends on how the MSO is written for that particular state. For example, KTM's have a motorcycle MSO in Pennsylvania, but an offroad MSO in NJ. As a result, you can walk out of the dealership with a plate in PA, but you cannot in NJ.

KTM needs to issue a recall on this and at minimum send owners free sensors. I don't know of a single '20 TPI bike that has not had this problem, including my own.

Wait for the 2023's to drop before you make a decision, there are rumors of some big changes to the TPI engines. I would not buy a 2022 or prior TPI personally

how do you know there isnt a problem with the other one? if they are the same sensor dosnt it make sense both may be faulty?

It’s entirely possible, but it would be very unlikely you’d notice a faulty atmospheric pressure sensor since it has such a relatively minor impact on ride quality. If you swap the two sensors and there is no improvement, two scenarios exist 1. Both sensors faulty 2. Pressure sensors are not causing the issue
