Kubota KX040-4 Excavator: How To Do The 500 Hour Service

Today we are walking through all of the steps to do a 500 hour service on the Kubota KX040-4 Mini Excavator plus changing out the air filters. This how to includes a list of tools and parts used to complete the service (be sure to verify the correct parts for your machine, there may be differences).
NOTE: the rough idle problem I was having completely went away after switching back to a Kubota fuel filter.

- 80W-90 Gear Oil (@1.5qt)
- RD159-51940 Separator Filter (1)
- HH1J1-43172 Fuel Filter (1)
- HH164-32430 Oil Filter (1)
- 15W-40 Engine Oil (5.3-5.5 qt)
- RD158-42270 Outer Air Filter (1)
- RD158-42280 Inner Air Filter (1)
- RD411-62150 Breather Filter (1)

Loosen the bleeder nut above the fuel filter when priming. That will help purge the air. I’m getting ready to do the 500 on my kx040-4. Informative video.

@@DirtAndRocksWhoops... Just got back from Harbor Freight, and it turns out that the Final Drive Hex size isn't 7/16. Lucky for me, I bought a full set, and the proper 5/16 was included. Not sure if your machine is a different size, but mine is a 2023 model.

am in the process of doing mine, thanks for showing me, it will save me time, however, at 20:22 you could have pointed out that you should clean out the Evacuator Valve, that rubber boot on the bottom of the filter housing, mine had a big glob of dirt inside, wish I had caught that sooner...

Fantastic video. Thank you for creating. I cant get mine started and error2 code on screen. When I disconnected the fuel line to water separator and turned key to activate pump, only a very small amount of fuel attempts to come out. Is it meant to be a continuous flow? Im wondering if fuel pump is faulty. Thanks in advance from Australia.

Thanks for watching! I tend to have issues getting the machine restarted when changing the fuel filter on my SVL65-2 track loader, especially if I do not prime the fuel filter with fuel. Normally i have to sit there with key on/engine off for up to 5 minutes to get the machine reprimed so it will start. Another spot where fuel restrictions tend to happen is the 90 degree elbows that go into the separator. If you have gotten into any dirty fuel, those may be clogged up. I am not really answering your question directly, and I apologize for that, I don’t know what error2 is, and I have not observed how much fuel pumps out of the line when disconnected. I would give the service dept at your closest dealer a call and ask them what the error code means, at least then you have a point to start from.

Hello, thanks for watching and commenting. I poked around on a few used equipment sites to see if I could get a baseline from other 040's with similar hours on them. I didn't see a huge difference between those and what mine look like. I will say that there are very few jobs we get into that are flat, and we work constant on steep slopes, etc. I don't expect that to be easy on the undercarriage, but we try to be diligent with routine maintenance and head off issues before they become a big problem. He’s correct, the drive sprockets look like they have 1500 hrs not 500. Crazy how hills can cause such fast wear.
