Those little half rooms are less expensive and the beds fold down in a different direction, so your sleep is better because you are moving with the flow of the train motion; whereas in the big sleeper rooms, you are being jostled uncomfortably in an opposite direction of the train motion, Better to book two of the smaller rooms on oppositie sides of the aisle (if you are travelling w/ someone) and then you have the option of viewing the best scenery from either side of the train, w/out having to compete w/ the standees' in the aisle. No shower in the smaller rooms, but not an issue because the small shower in the sleeper car is inconvenient and not used because everyone uses the larger shower rooms down the hall, anyway.

What a wonderful video. I didn't think I would like a video with subtitles but you did a magnificent job. I was worried that coming from a country with superb trains you would find many faults with Amtrak; we hear about that all the time. Instead, your very positive came through. In "days of old" (pre-Amtrak) you could reserve a sleeper car compartment from NYC's Grand Central Station (via Chicago) all the way to San Francisco. The NYC to Chicago's LaSalle Street Station portion would be via the New York Central's "Lake Shore Limited", then your train car would be shuttled over to Chicago's Union Station. Then continue on to San Francisco.

Uh, Oakland, actually. Up until some time in the 1950s, the train would terminate at a ferry boat pier for a water crossing to San Francisco. After ferry service was discontinued, it was (and continues to be) connecting busses across the Bay.

@@christopherstephans3383 A "Coast to Coast" NYC - Los Angeles sleeper thru-car ticket could also be obtained during the same time period (pre-Amtrak). Combining New York Central & then AT&SF's "Super Chief" for the west of Chicago portion.

I rode train from New Orleans to San Francisco 1974. Train hasn't changed, I'm sure they changed the seats, beds but everything is the same. Food is done different, we had a dinner car with cloth napkins, tablecloth. We had the menu to choose which meal. Also had a lil snack store downstairs... Going thru Texas was the most fun, people racing the train when road was along side the train tracks.

What a great trip, from East Coast to West Coast by Amtrak. Yeah, Lake Shore Limited is the fastest way by train from New York to Chicago via Upstate New York, but if you want more scenic, take the Cardinal. Unfortunately you got the older generation of bedroom, which some part is "beatboxing". Something interesting to see when you boarding the California Zephyr is the train announcement. Rockies area never disappointed, and also it's great to mention all natural landscape around California Zephyr route.

Thank you for sharing this. Your camera picks up details really well. Some of your shots of the mountains and big cities looked almost 3D. Was wonderful. When I was about 12 years old I rode the train from Detroit Michigan, to Chicago and then into Los Angeles California. On the same Amtrak Trains. This was back in the late 1960s...which goes to show how old our trains are in the U.S. We were in economy seating which worked out fine.

I enjoyed the video. Just a hint about the Viewliner bedroom, though you probably already learned this. First, the single seat next to the bathroom folds up and stows against the corner leaving plenty of room to use the shower and bath. The en-suite shower is why your bedroom costs so much more, I'm surprised you didn't try it. It's much more comfortable than the shared shower. Regarding the "beatbox door" -- that's a door that opens to allow two adjoining bedrooms to be joined for families. You have some cardboard safety flyers in the pocket next to the table. There are one or two "sweet spots" in the door where you can jam the cardboard between the door and its frame. That will stop the annoying rattle. I do this while the train is rolling, so that I can find just the right spot. At 5:11 in your video, you can see where a prior traveler made an attempt. Once you find the right spot for the cardboard, the rattling will stop. I know this shouldn't happen, but it does. FWIW, the same happens in the new Viewliner II bedrooms as well. I've booked a trip on the Zephyr next January, out to Emeryville and back the next day. I take an Amtrak vacation each year, and next January I'll be doing a round-trip between Boston and Emeryville. I'll be on the Lakeshore from Boston to Chicago, then the Zephyr, then making the same trip back. I really enjoy riding in the observation car and eating in the diner. I enjoy making new friends while watching the scenery slide by.

Don’t be surprised to encounter shaky seats, obsolete system and food served in dollar store dishes. But overall I did Enjoy every bit of the coverage of your trip story. After all US has so many other benefits to experience that most other countries don’t. After 4 days, however, you do get tired, or it seems. While the long distance Amtrak is amazing, it's anything but luxury. Coming from Japan, you would know it even better. Thanks ~

I took the zephyr from SF to Chicago in 1953 and the Chicago limited on to NYC. Mom and I were on the way to Germany to start our three year tour. Dad had gone over earlier. It took 11 days by ship from NY to Bremerhaven, Germany. I was 6 yo then

Haven't we seen this video before? I remember the noisy room and you wanting to be in the nicer/cheaper one!

I am from Hong Kong. Thanks for your sharing experience in the journey of amtrak, that why I can know more inside of the trains for my favourite N scale Kato trains on Superliner & Viewliner.
