lol, I was thinking about that 'talking' stuff the other day. I also love Kuga's vids for the quiet contemplation...I could sit there beside him and stare out the window and just chill for hours (well except for the stretching my legs and ankles, lol0. I truly believe Americans have that tendency to talk, talk, talk either because they really are noisy, or because they are trying not to have to 'think' about things and talking takes up space and time...ps, yes, I'm American :)

You slept through the best scenery- through Oakridge, then up the Willamette Valley with all of the Cascade volcanoes showing between Eugene and Seattle.

I've been to meet my now partner there, in Northern California, and he showed me soooo much, he lives in Piercy California, we went through a few national parks with the breathtaking Redwoods, we've driven next to the coastline to and in Oregan. It was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. So glad I went there, and I will again asap

Amtrak has an aversion to traveling during periods where the best scenery is visible during daylight. SEA to CHI, both directions, the mountain traverse is at night. Always been this way and it's puzzling.

I rode Amtrak from Chicago to New Jersey back in 1983-ish end it was wonderful I was 18 years old. What an experience it was on the train. It was very comfortable. I'm almost 60 now and I remember and cherish every moment.

I've traveled twice in the sleeper cars on the Amtrak Coast Starlight. It's awesome. Friendly and helpful staff. Very comfortable, clean, and quiet. Delicious food. Beautiful views.

I will say compared to European trains with showers the Amtrak is a bit more adventurous as at times it can be a tad shakier but I can only say wonderful things about the Amtrak staff. Always happy to chat and so friendly.

To be honest, when you factor in the meals, the fact that you're basically in a moving hotel for 2 days, and the actual train ticket price, it's not too bad. More than flying, yeah. But, riding a train is often looked over as slow and outdated. Yet, it's still a really nice way to travel.

There is a good reason most Americans have never done it. The price is ridiculous and the cars are the same as they were in 1976. Just been retrofitted over and over. Give us decent speeds and actual sleeper cars and we'd all give it a try.

I'm happy you enjoyed your trip. Growing up in Portland with a father who worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad out of Union Station I've loved and travelled on trains around the world, from the US to China, Thailand, and Morocco. I haven't yet travelled by train in Japan, but from all I've heard, praise for Amtrak from anyone from there is praise indeed. Travel safe, have fun, make some lasting memories of my homeland.

Hey buddy, Welcome to the US! I know about the locomotives. The secondary locomotives is P-42 which is about to be retired once all ALC-42 arrives, probably in a couple of years. I rode from Kirkwood, MO to Fostoria, Oh (now closed) in 2005 and P-42 was cool! My first experience with P-42 was good, felt like 150 mph but I found out it was going 70 to 80 mph. These chicago people was so nice to me since I am deaf. I had ecomany tickets, but after changing in Chicago, they PUT me on business class coach without getting an upgrade. They did themselves. I could have an hour and half in St. Louis, I would have toured their station but the train came like 2-3 hours late so they had to make up, so the train stopped for like 5-10 mins before going to Chicago. I didn't miss my connection; I think it got there on time though. I hope to experience the ALC-42 soon! IM on Northeast Corridor route.

We took the Coast Starlight from San Jose to LA Union Station, and then the Southwest Chief to (as close as one can get by train) to Santa Fe, New Mexico. We had the roomette down to LA, despite not traveling at night, but got the biig room from LA to Santa Fe. Well worth the upgrade charge! The food was great then, too, and I believe I had the flatiron steak, too! Excellent!! That was in 1990, for our honeymoon. It doesn't look like it has changed since then! I'm happy you enjoyed it, as I enjoyed your video of the fast train from Tokyo to Hokkaido! That is one beautiful train!!! ❤

Thank you very much for sharing your experience on the Amtrak Coast Starlight. I've done this trip, last April, but in different segments, using the USA rail pass that allows me to do 10 segment for $299 but in a coach seat. I decide to do it different days, and getting off and on the train in some cities, to take advantage and see a lot from San Diego to Seattle. I also stopped in Los Angeles, Sacramento Portland, Oregon and then Seattle,Washington, and then keep going on the Empire Builder train, all the way East to Chicago. Even if it was coach and meals were not included, the price was really cheap, and the experience was worthy and beautiful scenery to enjoy.

もう何十年も前になりますが、Martinez駅（CA）からSeattleまでAmtrakで行ったことがあります！Amtrakバスで拾ってもらってMartinez駅に到着、そこから4時間待って電車に乗り込みました。席の隣に座った人と食堂車でランチしたり、楽しい思い出が出来ました💗またいつか乗りたいです。

I’ve done that ride and I’m not sure if I would call the cabin “luxury.” Maybe it’s different now that they have the updated cars, but when I did it a few years ago, it was like being on an airplane in the 1980’s…

I'm a senior American, and I've never been on an Amtrak train. I would love to try it someday. I think the price for this ride is ridiculous. For that amount you should at least have your own bathroom. Glad the food was good. The bed looks comfy. No TV? Very interesting! Thank you for sharing. ❤

I dont know if youve already finished your travels or not, but if you make it up to Vancouver (Canada), you should take a ride on one of the BC Ferries routes through the Gulf Islands. The routes can be notoriously busy in the sumner, but the scenery is lovely!

The most common are: 1) the lack of accessibility to healthy foods 2) taxes and tips 3) everyone smiling at and communicating with strangers 4) how ungodly loud we are 😂 Our smiles are like a bow, it gives acknowledgment, a welcome, and elevates the good endorphins of both parties. Same with being loud! Being a tribal species, moods are contagious and if everyone is laughing and celebrating around us, it makes us feel good, too. It must be a real shock, though! I’ve never ridden Amtrak with a sleeper compartment, but it’s the only way I’ll ever go overnight again. Sitting in coach and trying to sleep is the worst! Especially in this age of personal electronics with people talking on their phones, watching movies, etc. - at all hours. Unfortunately the cost difference between coach and a roomette is hundreds of dollars. Overall, the long distance Amtrak experience is not very pleasant, especially solo, but it makes reaching the end of the trip that much more a relief!

Ahh i was hoping youd get the steak! Ive watched the other train youtubers get it as well. Alot of us who travel in the states bring our own soap and shampoo and conditioner we put it in travel size bottles so we can use the same stuff we use at home by the way so hopefully people could just see their hygiene items and just save the trains for momentos

For a while, Amtrak started serving prepackaged food on most sleeper trains, but now they are going back to freshly-prepared on some lines. It looks like the turkey sandwich was the only poor one! Most people love the flatiron steak dinner. Amtrak sleepers are expensive, but I think they are worth the experience.

Most of the "camping cars" are homeless people/families. It's actually harder to do the camping car thing here like you can in Korea and Japan, because people just assume you are homeless and tell you to move on. We don't have anything close to the Japanese Road Station network here.

A hint regarding American food. The turkey/ chicken sandwich you had for lunch, in most cases, is always delicatessen meat. It is pressed meat cut from a loaf. If chicken/turkey is offered as a main course (dinner) It will be fresh meat, as offered during your trip.

Ohhhh! Our favorite route! The only scenic drawback is that it is going through the Siskyous in Northern CA at night (both directions) otherwise there would be a tremendous view of Mount Shasta! Though northbound, if you get up early as it is traveling though Butte Valley and Kalamath Shasta is really beautiful in the sunrise!

We did some of this route (LAX - EMY) in May as part of a 6 week rail tour of the US and loved it. The scenery is amazing - one miniute you're almost on the beach and the next you're climbing through mountains. Jackie the cafe car attendant was very entertaining :) If I was doing it again I'd get a bedroom as the roomettes are very small for two people.

I was on the Shasta Daylight as a child, eons ago. My Dad worked for Southern Pacific railroad, and he had a pass. My brother took it across country from Oakland, CA to the east coast but he said it was a very long trip. The freight trains have priority like they always have had it took a few days. hat is probably why you were an hour late. This ride looked very nice though and the food seemed to please the Kuga-san of course there wasn't any curry but I am sure he wasn't expecting it there or in Alaska :)

Kuga, this Video was Very Nice as I expecte of you. I love Kuga's train travel Videos. The Sleeping Quarters look very Comfortable. The dining was exceptional. The fancy Chef prepared meals looked Scumptious, especially on a train traveling the country. It was like being in a nice hotel on Railroad tracks traveling from LA to Seattle.

I hope it wasn’t a disaster of a trip. A decent 4 out of 5 meals. Nothing fancy and I’m really sorry about that turkey sandwich. Not the best burger you’d find just about anywhere but you seemed to enjoy it. You’re berth didn’t have washroom or bathroom but you made the best of it. I like traveling vicariously through you. It’s been a few hours of exploring with you that I’ve really enjoyed. You made your trips and looked at it as positively as you could. I’m going to start my next trips with you wherever you go. I've been wanting to try this route, or something like it! It has some of the most beautiful scenery in the US. Also Amtrak has quite a few routes that take you to through the national parks, which sounds spectacular. Thanks for sharing with us, I was curious if this was worth the long trip. Sorry for the somewhat sad lounge. They could have at least put out some hot food! 😭🤣

Thanks for the upload. The great thing about train travel is of course that you actually see something of the country, which is great. Looks like a descent product but not what I would call “luxury”. I was spoiled when I took America’s last true luxury train (American-European Express) from Washington DC to Chicago back in the 90’s. Unbelievable experience never to be forgotten.

That was a fun trip and thank you for showing my hometown of Seattle ..well at last King Street station. The food looks amazing and of course the scenery. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us.

I did the same trip, but in reverse from San Francisco to LA as part of an Amtrak Vacation. For the whole 12-13 days, it was the same menu every trip.

Watching this video certainly brings back memory about 10 years ago, I took the exact Amtrak train/route from LA to Seattle in the exact same type of room as you were in. So sad that the train has become so old now, although with some reupholstering on the seat, everything else seems to remain the same....including the dining car.....The fare then was about half of the current rate, and flying is still a lot cheaper than riding the train.

Out of all of your long-distance sleeper train journeys, apart from those gorgeous ones in Japan, this one was my favourite so far. Yes, the roomette was more 'ette' than room, and had few modern facilities, but the bed looked comfortable. I'm still stumped as to why there are no locks on the doors from the outside though for security. The food looked decent - the diabetes comment re: cake made me laugh. The US puts SO much sugar in things, it makes my teeth melt.

There's no need for security for your stuff on an Amtrak train in any sleeper room. It's more for your peace of mind for your personal security while you are sleeping

The one thing I don't like is their six minute showers on the trains. One cannot get cleaned properly in that short amount of time.

@@englishatheartyou are able to stop the water in between, you have 8 min of water but as long as you need to clean yourself

I’m starting to look into a Sleeper ride from Boston/NewYork to Colorado…. Do you have a video on a trip of that length and route? Or would you have one in the works possibly?! I think quite a few, me being amongst them; would be keen on watching that as well!! Edit: I just realized you are a foreign traveller!! Awesome! I look forward to following your journey’s! Great video!! It's a trip I dream about taking. I'm glad you showed all the food, in case I ever get to go. I would be watching the scenery every minute I could.
