Did similar in the ‘80’s in Northern Indiana (Winamac) with a 3ft X 8ft farm livestock watering tank pool. Routed a garden hose from the pump/filter, coiled the hose on a slanted square of plywood (Sunward facing) then back into the pool. Sprayed the hose with black paint. Took the night chill out of the water every day without the use of a glass cover or box. The kids loved it.

Nice video filled with good tips & trix. I'm setting up a solar powered pool heater right now and my goal is 30°C / 86°F. I'm starting with 250 meters / 820 feet of 20 mm / ¾ inch PEM hose in a flat rooftop setup. A 20V rainwater barrel pump (2,000 liters - 528 gallons / hour) will be connected directly to a solar panel, so it's a completely automatic system controlled and powered by the sun. No sun = no pump = no heating. Since I'm located at 60° latitude in the northern hemisphere, I'll guess it'll be some problems to solve along the way, but it'll be fun. Keep up your good work

good idea, i did the same years ago less professional (wooden frame, 3 pipe coils, plexiglass plate) but just a risk, the problem concerns the polypropylene pipes which with heat and time will pierce ... it is necessary that the water circulates permanently otherwise there is a too strong rise in temperature, and that kills the pipes
@justinmyers719
@justinmyers719 3 жыл бұрын
This is a good video. You can run larger pipe - say 200 feet of 1 1/2 black pipe as near as possible to roof to heat and store more water than this. As anything with solar alone - output is greatly varied - but definitely efficient.

Hi, you should point in the description that you reached this temperature boost after some time of heating water in the collector. It's impossible to reach such good results with a constant water flow around 10l/min (9:20 - 10:20). Math says that in such case, with collector size 1m x 2m you are able to boost up the temperature about 3C as the sun provides about 1kW per square meter. It's still better than a nothing. Cheers.

I've seen a similar thing way back using a single-glazed frame (before proper double glazing was common) fitted with a wooden back board. The water was passed along thin copper piping in a zig-zag fashion and painted black for maximum solar absorption. I would be interested to see if that performance can be maintained at the flow rate you show, I get water at that sort of temperature from my garden hose water that has been heated in the sun all day before I turn the mains water on: it runs like bath water initially of course but soon runs out of steam. Yours is a really nice project but I think you'd need a few dozen of those to make a significant difference to a small pool. I love the idea though so well done.

Very nice. I’ll take the version that mounts to my south facing roof. Better to heat water then burn my shingles LOL. I’ve been watching a lot of these videos and I find myself wondering why some manufacturer doesn’t make a 4 by 4 foot evacuated glass “pocket” to place a heating tube inside. The methodology, simulator to a solar tube could actually boil water. Your are blessed with fine workmanship and ideas.. well done !

I pried my glass off in a cool garage, so I heated 18 inches of the edge with a heat gun 700 degrees, after a minute I slide my knife under the glass and was carefull to keep the knife tight to the glass ( not in the thick of the butyl glue) I kept the heat on the knife and the glass and slid it easily. The window does move so you need to block it, if youve got both hands on a knife and heat gun. I also put a wedge small bolt under the lifted window , so that it didnt fall back on the hot glue and get stuck.

Last year I built two 4x4 boxes for my 18x48 above ground pool with 200 ft of quality heat resistant 5/8 water hose with brass fittings, the plastic ends will melt and a cheap hose will melt the inside. That was my first mistake, bought cheap water hoses. I ended up getting Good Year hoses. Even though the water hose was black i spray painted them a flat black. I had an old front window from my house for one box and some old shower doors for the other. Cut the ends of some soda cans and put as many as could fit inside the box with the hose and painted flat black. The cans act like a vortex of heat. I use to Y off from my 12 inch intex sand filter pump. Just switch over from pool to solar boxes. I would run a big hose to a smaller hose into the box witch would slow down the flow of water. As the day got hoter i could let the pump run the hot water continuously. I just bought the 16 inch intex sand filter pump but has to much pressure for my hose, so i use my old 12 inch pump directly to the solar boxes. I live in San Diego so the average temp is around mid 70s to mid 80s. Iam in my pool around mid April. I keep a solar cover on it when not using and will lose a couple of degrees at night. I have the pool wrapped with 4 layers of 4 mill plastic witch helps. I keep the temp of the water around 84 to 86. I have got the water up to 90. I will let it get to 88. I have tried the irrigation plastic stuff before but it melted inside. I made many mistakes before i got it right. My neighbors with there nice pretty pools are sitting at the edge of the pool with feet in and i am swimming in my pool. I like to get in the pool early in the morning when the air is cool and the water in my pool is at 84. Those solar boxes get very very very hot, you will burn your hands

Cold water in the pipe will absorb more heat than hot water, because of the greater temperature differential (that's simple physics). So it's a bit counter-intuitive, but it is better to keep the water flowing quickly through the heater pipe, whatever the temperature. I.e. it is better to heat a large amount of water slightly, than a tiny amount of water to a higher temperature. .Just cycle the water through more times. You could have cut the 200 foot length into shorterr, and had more parallel tubes so the output didn't get so hot. Keep the water flowing more quickly so it never gets hot enough to melt even cheap plastic hose, and the whole pool will heat faster.

Very neat work, but painting the top glass black will just serve to reflect the sun's rays and reduce the overall efficiency. And I bet if you pump the water through at a decent rate, when a steady state is reached the temperature gain will be minimal.
@Thiscutepup
@Thiscutepup 2 жыл бұрын
I wonder if cleaning the inside of the glass with paint thinner and then painting it with ultra black might increase the heat absorption? I would suggest using soft copper tubing painted ultra black. The non sun facing side could be insulated with foam to prevent heat escaping the non facing side of the sun. Maybe the area on the edge of the heater could stage temp sensors, and and a digital flow meter.

The glass side he used actually blocks heat. What you are supposed to do is to get a square or rectangle uv double pained window; Heck, even a triangle-shaped one. Then you do what he did, except you flip the top glass putting the uv protection facing inward. This way light goes in and helps with insulation by reflecting light that went through, hit the back, and bounced back up. The bounced back up light hits the UV and bounces back down.

Your mentioning low volume of water passing through the coils is super important as the black tubes are not good conductors of heat, like copper tubing would be. Therefore, run the water through very slowly, giving the water more time within the coils to absorb more heat. Good DIY project and can be done so inexpensively. I have used this same system since the early 1970s.

If you want to warm up something quickly, you have to raise the flow. Cold water warms up more quickly then warm water ;) So if you would use this for like a swimming pool, you want higher flow rate. The water that is comming out will be less warm but you have more volume that is slighlty warmer then your pool water

This is a common misconception about the science involved. I heard the same argument with car engines and radiators. The fact is that heat transfer occurs more quickly between more widely disparate temperatures. By moving the fluid more quickly, you expose cooler water to the heat in the tubing. That is a more efficient strategy.

It would have been great if you could have measured the input and output temperatures AND the water flow rate so that the net power of the heater could be worked out. It would also be good to know the size of the collector so the power per unit area could be calculated so that the heater design can be scaled up or down depending on an individual need. Otherwise, an awesome idea to encapsulate the coil inside a double glazing unit.

how it looks after several intense sunning days? Does not remove the black painting?

Solar pool heater still looks nice and works great. Black color is not removed even after a month because I used black spray paint original for glass.

Did the 116 degree water kill the grass? It stressed it pretty good , I bet.

Very good system. I will make a similar one. What is the glue/mastic that you use to hold the hose on the glass ?

нижнее стекло и шланг-трубу в кипельно матовый черный цвет (глянец отражает много света и тепла), результат будет намного лучше, да и верхнее стекло не закрашивать. идея крутая, эстетика есть, но можно добиться выхлопа по градусам выше
