Kundun is a 1997 American epic biographical film written by Melissa Mathison and directed by Martin Scorsese. It is based on the life and writings of Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, the exiled political and spiritual leader of Tibet. Tenzin Thuthob Tsarong, a grandnephew of the Dalai Lama, stars as the adult Dalai Lama, while Tencho Gyalpo, a niece of the Dalai Lama, appears as the Dalai Lama's mother.
Before the film was released, China's leaders hotly objected to Disney's plans to distribute the film, including to the point of threatening Disney's future access to China as a market. Disney's steadfastness stood in stark contrast to Universal Pictures, which had earlier "turned down the chance to distribute Kundun for fear of upsetting the Chinese." Scorsese, Mathison, and several other members of the production were banned by the Chinese government from ever entering China as a result of making the film. China retaliated by banning Disney films and pulling Disney television cartoons.
Disney apologized in 1998 for releasing the film and began to "undo the damage", eventually leading to a deal to open Shanghai Disneyland by 2016. Former Disney CEO Michael Eisner has apologized for offending Chinese sensitivities, calling the film "a stupid mistake." He went on to say, "The bad news is that the film was made; the good news is that nobody watched it. Here I want to apologize, and in the future we should prevent this sort of thing, which insults our friends, from happening."
By 2015 Scorsese's ban had apparently been lifted as he attended the premiere of his short film The Audition in Macau.
As of 2022, the movie is unavailable on U.S. streaming platforms. However, it was released on DVD and Blu-ray by Kino Lorber in 2019.

Tibet was ruled by monks who had absolute power and 95% of the population was living as feudal serfs before it was liberated by CPC. Tibet was an unrecognized slave state that practised ritual lashings, amputations and executions by hypothermia. I've been to Tibetan camps in India and Nepal. And let me tell you: Tibetan culture is MUCH better preserved in China, and people's life conditions are incomparably more prosperous.
@alexandrabiryukova8847

@@onya_marxWould you care to elaborate how is Tibetan culture better preserved in China? Which measures are taken? What is the opinion of Tibetans on this matter?
@onya_marx
@onya_marx Ай бұрын
@@alexandrabiryukova8847 It's simple. Tibet under the communists: the Tibetan language gets standardized for the first time, and formerly illiterate feudal serfs finally become literate in their own language. The culture of the former ruling class and the broad masses differed greatly.
@alexandrabiryukova8847
@alexandrabiryukova8847 Ай бұрын
@@onya_marx It's not simple because cultural identity can't be reduced to a language. There were a lot of negative consequences for Tibet. For example most monasteries were destroyed during Cultural revolution. Only some of them were rebuilt. Others were left to ruin. And China promised that they would respect religious freedom. How often CCP considers desires and views of the Tibetan people now? Do you mean spoken or literal Tibetan? Because their literal culture has existed for thirteen hundred years. And aren't there still problems with standartization because of dialects? What measures are taken to promote the use and development of Tibetan? You ignored my other questions. You know, these arguments are very similar European colonial rhetoric. The conquest or, as you say, "liberation" is justified by the necessity to civilize backward barbarian people. China also had many traditions which could be considered barbaric. Should Europeans have invaded China to put an end to footbinding, for instance? Or Russia where serfdom existed till 1861? Or USA? The system in Bhutan was similar to Tibetan and it was abolished in 50s. It happened without Chinese invasion.

One of the most beautiful films ever made: I saw it on the big screen when it came out (apparently a rarity): the depth and profundity of an indigenous people grounded in compassion, Buddhism, and Bon, from shamans to Enlightened Lamas, from farmers to servants, it's a culture the West can hardly fathom yet somehow Martin Scorsese's sensitive artist eye (incredible camera angles and such sensitivity to the humans in front of the lens) and Melissa Mathison's incredible script of intelligence and penetrating insight captures the miracle of Tibet and the horror of their Chinese overloads -- for China to try and erase what it has done must be countered by free-thinking people, esp. those of us who have benefited greatly from the three great jewels bequeathed to us from Tibet: the Buddha, the Dharma, the Sangha yet as His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama bravely and wisely shows us only compassion will heal and righten the wounds of the past as we continue to work for a brighter future... this should be streamed worldwide, thank you for posting this here and may it ever be so! Ho!

The History of Tibet, Mongolia and China are not peaceful at all. A Chinese Emperor ended a 300 years war between Lhassa and another city for the domination of Tibet. The first Dalaï Lama was named by Gengis Khan after his invasion of Tibet. Later the Mongols have been under Tibetan rule till the Russian War end of the 18th Century.

No hate or anything towards the Tibetans but we who lived on the fringes of the Tibetan border know how violent the Tibetans were. Kingdom of Ladakh, once a prominent power in the region was utterly destroyed because of the Tibetans, they destroyed zhangzhung before that. China taught them non-violence by showing them what violence does, otherwise it was just lip-service, nowadays Tibetans are considered peace-loving because they have no other way.

"Divide and conquer" was a trick by the West after 500 years of colonization. Tibet was part of China since the Yuan Dynasty (1240-1354) and then the Qing Dynasty until 1911. Tibet sought independence only for 30 years (!921-1951), while China dealt with the warlords and the Japanese imperial invaders. The West always ignores others' history (because it had a horrible history) and uses gaslighting tricks to make others focus only on the 30 years rather than the 900 years of history. This is just part of the colonial narratives the West has created to demonize their ideological "enemies" IN THE NAME OF TIBETANS. They never allow anyone who is different than them to unite, proper, and thrive.

I wonder what Disney and Scorcese said were their reasons for doing such an extreme about face, and I wonder what was the actual reason for it. They may be similar, but no doubt they are not the same thing. So I wonder about them both. I'm sure we'll never know what the true reason was. When such a talented director puts SO much effort into making what I hear (I haven't watched it yet, but I know what it's about.) is a GREAT movie, he/she usually believes in it whole heartedly, so WHAT could have caused him to so drastically change his mind?! A complete change in his world view, and every philosophy he believes in? Not very likely. Were his children threatened? Equally unlikely. What then?

The ideas of non-violence and peace are the personnal ideas of the 14th Dalaï Lama. Gandhi is a predecessor. Before them, a Persian Prophet came with a bigger idea of Peace and non-violence, Baha'u'llah.

@@fredengels8188 In those times, the alternative would have been slavery to warlords. Most of the peasants were happier under the Dalai Lama's protection, rather than live with the ruthless horror of warlords.
