When the Shang-Chi movie came out, the Ten Rings reminded me of the iron rings used by one of the hidden masters (The Tailor). Incidentally the Landlord was in Shang-Chi too, as one of the elders in Talo.

Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer, King Of Cookery are the best example of how to adapt anime into live action and this films specifically feels like they are adaptation of a Shonen Anime This and Shaolin Soccer are my childhood i have seen them like 1000 times and I'm not exaggerating 😂😂😂

absolutely one of the best martial arts type of movies ever made, doesnt take itself too seriously but it's got what everybody comes to expect from the genre, humor, atmosphere and ass-kicking.

This is one of my favorites. I have three different copies of it (widescreen, standard, and steelbook). There is nothing wrong with me.

Fun fact. They are finally working on a Kung Fu Hustle 2 as of last year.

Haven’t watched this movie in YEARS, but now that I’ve rewatched parts of it with you guys, certain parts feel very anime-esque to me since I’ve been watching tons of anime lately. This movie brings back memories, man. Just tons of fun and an enjoyable movie. Loved the sht out of it tbh.

Yess this movie slaps!! My favourite moment is when the landlady yells at the tailor (rings guy) and he makes the funniest crying sound and runs away 😂when my friend and i watched it the first time we couldn't stop rewinding to see it again lmao, that actor was awesome

Watch this a few months ago again with my 11 year old daughter. She loved it and I had a little tear in my eye 😁

*FYI:* the movie pay homage to a lot of traditional tropes from Wuxia genre, especially how the main lead was able to recover from all those injuries. It has a lot more meaning in to those familiar with the genre and the short of it is, it's the combination of the manuscript from his childhood (which gives him the foundation) + the snake bit + later injury. What doesn't kills you will make you significantly more powerful, and each of those fatal injury is a trial to pass a threshold. Saiyan and Senzu bean from Dragonball uses the same tropes in bean form, each time a Saiyan recover from near fatal injury, it has the same effect.

The guzheng (harp insturment) fight is still one of my favorite fights. Then again I also love many asian stringed instruments. They sound so beautiful.

The toad style that the beast used is taken from "the return of the condor hero" and considered as one of the most deadly technique used by "the poison of the west" almost all of the character, and techniques from this movie is a direct reference to the classic kung-fu novel such as "the condor hero" , "the return of the condor hero", "the dragon slaying blade" , and many more.. (the land lady and landmaster is nicknamed as siau long lie and yao guo, which is the protagonists of the return of the condor hero)

I love this story with all my heart. A street rogue hero finds that any action that he takes in the direction of good only ever leads him to failure and personal loss. Wanting to succeed in some way shape or form, he chooses to do bad hoping to gain the respect he thought he had lost. Yet somehow, someway, life keeps pushing him, and reminding him to do good. Unable to part with his inner demons, it takes a merciless beat down for him emerge, reborn.

This movie needed a part 2. It was awesome

Remember the old guy in Ta Lo that Katy was kinda butting heads with in Shang-Chi? He was Landlord in this. Yuen Wah.

Yuen Qiu, The actress who played the landlady is an expert of both Chinese martial arts and Beijing-opera skills, and was apprenticed at the Peking Opera School under the same master, Yu Jim-yuen, as Jackie Chan, and Sammo Hung. She also had a small role in the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun

I think the chosen one thing was definitely a reference like the rest, to the classic trope. Just the way it's presented almost like a 4th wall break makes me think you're supposed to see that and go "Oh they're self-aware of the trope and playing it straight", you get sudden stiff narration and glances at the camera when they're talking about "Did I forget to mention I'm a kung-fu master?" and it cuts to a flashback or blatant exposition like when the couple is talking about "the only way he could survive is if he was the one in a million kung fu genius!" just super monotone and cheesy on purpose.

Saw this on dvd years ago, still an instant classic. Literally like live action anime done right.

The old man who sells books at the back of the movie, his name is Woo Ping, his Chinese name is yuan he ping, he is the action instructor of The Matrix, a real martial arts master

I freaking love this movie. The action the comedy, the heart, and the overall imaginative badasserry mixed with the k owl edge of it being a parody of old king fu movies makes it that much better

I can't believe you guys just watched this. Honestly. I LOVE this movie. This was my first Stephen Chow movie. I remember my sister and I watched it on Netflix around 2008. This movie probably has my favorite ending, its in the top 3 at the very least. I love the music, them working at the candy shop and how you see the younger selves of the guy and woman before he takes her into the candy shop.

I cant think of another film I've rewatched so much while growing up. The action, comedy, the badass axe gang. It's an absolute classic

This is such a fantastic movie and I've seen it so many times. I love the blend of action and comedy. It definitely has bits where it feels like 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' with the cartoonish bits mixed into reality. Some really good humor and fantastic choreography.

The problem with Chosen One stories, is that by now, those stories have been really over done in cinema. It's hard to do it in a way that's surprising. If you lead up too much, it takes away from the reveal. If you skip the foreshadowing, it can seem awkward & rushed. I think a pretty good balance was struck, based on the fine line that was being walked. I think the movie works far better than "The Golden Child" - another Chosen One story. (obviously) For another twist on a Golden Child type of story, you might like Jackie Chan's "The Medallion". For another classic Chinese mythological story with Stephen Chow, you might like "The Mad Monk". Of course, there's also "Shaolin Soccer", and I'm surprised so few have recommended that. That really is another must watch Stephen Chow film.

Omgggggggg it's the english voice over one that's the funny one because they changed the dialog to make it even more comedic. Everyone who reacts to this always watches the wrong one.

Awesome unexpected reaction. Saw it in theaters as a kid and most of the humor definitely went over my head. I remember feeling bad for characters that I now realize are literal punch lines.

Idk why but the scene with them laughing at the chick while escaping is so hilarious to me because you expect the scene to cut but it keeps going.

One of my fav Chinese cinema movies as a kid, and it still holds up! Stephen Chow is a genius! "Shaolin Soccer" should be your next..its sort of a predecessor to this. The intro to this movie had a wink wink homage joke/reference to it where Stephen Chow stomps on the soccer ball

You should check out Shaolin Soccer after this. Imagine this but with soccer. Also, Stephen Chow was in the running to do the live action DBZ movie before we got that horrible movie. He would have done an amazing job if he had done the DBZ movie.

The screeching landlady appeared in the 1974 James bond movie, The Man with the Golden Gun. In the movie, both her and her sister helped defend Bond (Roger Moore) when he escaped from the karate compound from which he was being held.

The funniest scene to me is when the boss of the Axe Gang becomes terrified of the landlords and gets his hair ignited. Also, when the landlady finds lipstick on the landlords check and just starts rocking him with swings.

Not a Chinese but Chinese movies were made fun for the excessive use of CGI. That's exactly what Hollywood is banking on in the name of super heroes now.

"What are you prepared to do" was a reference to the movie The Untouchables, the line was from Sean Connery, who asks Ness after he gets shot. They shend one of yoursh to the hoshpital, you shend one of theirsh to the morgue. Thatsh the Chicago way.

No sequel (I dont think it needs one) but before this Chow did Shaolin Soccer which you guys should totally watch. Very similar tone. In 2013 he directed Journey to the West which is based on the same ancient legend Dragonball is based on, and it's a super weird adventure fantasy.

This is one of those movies you don't get bored how many ever times you watch it great re-watch value

Became a huge Stephen Chow fan after watching Shaolin Soccer, and this movie is right up there for me. Definitely check out The God of Cookery (Food Wars vibes!) Journey to the West, and King of Comedy, too. All pretty great!

Love this movie. I saw it in theaters. And I actually really like the dub. Its kind of intentionally cheesy and terrible but its very faithful to the script. I never ever get tired of watching this movie. Its just such a super fun movie.

Yo ! This movie, like all Stephen Chow's movies, is UNFORGETTABLE ! It's simple, once you've seen one of his movies (like Shaolin Soccer, another cinematic UFO) you'll remember it for LIFE ! His style is so absurd and quirky and unique it just burns it imprint deep in your brain and never leaves you, like a funny curse that will follow you for the rest of your life. So when you said "I think I might have seen this when I was 15" I was like " yeah, you've never watched it..." You lucky bastard ^^.

Toad Style, Buddha palm etcetera are all references to the old Shaw Brothers kung fu movies back to the 60s-70s. Most of the actors here are legendary HK action actors back in the days. This is Stephen Chow homage to the old KungFu shows.

After the glory days in the 80's and early 90's of Hong Kong movie scene (horror, horror comedy, kungfu, detectives shows etc), Kung Fu Hustle remind people of how fun movies from there can still be made in the early 2000's. Im not a Chinese but during those glory days, as a kid, i often watch and enjoy these old school Hong Kong movies as long as they have the subtitles.

Man, it's been years since I watched this movie. It's so great. Thankfully, Stephen Chow confirmed that a sequel is happening but that was back in 2019. Hopefully he gives more info in the near future.
