Kung Fu Sword Training : 4 Basic Cuts

This is a combination of 4 horizontal cuts of the kung fu sword that provides a solid foundation to sword training. One of the unique aspects of this technique is that the first two slices and last two slices are done in the same direction which is all dependent on the placement of the guarding hand in relation to the swords resting position upon completion of the cut.
This is a combination that I teach to my students when they begin learning the sword.

Like your vid. One question for you, that I always ask myself, why are you learning this? Is it to just learn this form/movement pattern to continue an art or is it to learn an actual combat style that I can and will fight with? It would be nice to know your motivation 👍🙂

Thanks! Your question is an excellent piece of advice and should always be on students minds when learning something new. Though I don't go into depth on KZfaq, I am very application focused in my training and teaching. I love to spar and test the techniques and figure out what type of force should go where and at what time, and what makes it more effective vs less effective... I just don't show many applications on KZfaq, I feel that it is something best learned in person. Experienced martial artists would be able to pick up the concepts and nuances in a video, but to learn it right, it's best in person.

Hi James, unfortunately I am unable to. Mah Mun Dao is a Shaolin form as fr as I know, and I only know Choy Li Fut.

That is not a sword; jian. That is a saber; dao. Terminology is important. Chinese swords have two edges. A saber has one. It is classified as a knife.

@@jinn2400 Not really true. There is a Chinese word for "sword". It's "jian" 剑 (or "bao jian" 宝剑). If you live in certain parts of the US or Canada where Cantonese is the version of Chinese spoken, they'd call it gim (or bo gim) The Chinese do not call a dao 刀 a "sword". They call it dao because it is well, a knife, and dao is the Chinese word for knife, albeit big and long compared to the cleaver we use in the kitchen to chop up big pieces of meat with bones attached. The confusion came about when someone started to translate both weapons to "sword", calling the jian a sword - and that's what it is - and a dao a broadsword (sometimes "sabre") because it looks like a sword but has a broad blade.
