I love the way this man teachers in all the videos I seen him in. He trys to be a silly best friend type guy. Breaks it all down. And, shows with each move he does which is a threat by it self, he is also setting up his second step, 3rd step 4th , 5th, and so on. Showing it's really is a thinking art. It's not just Physical but also what between the ears.

This guy is an 'old school' legend, hut, if you watch his videos and his fights, he was one of the pioneers of modern MMA. Incredible man who has lived and incredible life. I hope the kids in this seminar were respectful and realised what an honour they had being taught by the Superfoot.

"I learned to box for two reasons...." lol Superfoot is amazing, and he is definitely telling the truth. Boxing, and karate go together well in my estimation. It gives you a great deal of variety, and allows you to manipulate the range well. A solid karateka is a threat, and a solid karateka with some fundamental boxing is a serious threat.

It's true, people learn in 3's. First time you surprise them, second time they catch it and start planning a counter , 3rd time you switch it and catch them. It shouldn't work as often as it does, but it does. I picked up that trick from Mr. Wallace waaaay back in the early 80's

There aren't many like Bill any more. Lot of the "legends" are gone. Joe Lewis--gone. Still have Benny "the Jet" Urquidez though. Chuck Norris (who does't do interviews seminars). Jim Kelly is dead. Of course Bruce Lee as of 73...though, I never considered Bruce a "legend". He was a film star. As much as he tried to say he wasn't. That's all he was since he never competed. As an amateur...thus, he never turned pro. So Lee was never tested/documented (photos/film). My respect goes to proven champions like Wallace, Urquedez...proven. backgrounds undeniable.

I believe hes had 3 hip replacements. Special designs too to help him keep his hip mobility. Older now, I note he is throwing mainly chest or rib high side kicks in his teaching seminars, though he can still throw the odd round kick or hook kick at head height, at least no so long back I saw in a video. Maybe the days of five kicks at head height with that high knee up are gone, or maybe he reserves it for special occasions, but Bill has *nothing* left to prove regarding his ability. A true magnificent legend, and long may he continue to bless the martial arts world.
@kbanghart
@kbanghart 2 жыл бұрын
@@tomg2946 love his kicks but I was watching another video of him recently where he said that you know, kicks to the head are great but they can miss a lot, he said most of his knockouts came from kicks to the ribs. Which is great news for a lot of us who can't kick that high LOL. Of course kicking that high also leaves you wide open standing on one leg, so against a grappler I would say that's a tough proposition, yes?

It's great BW continues to give seminars. But every time we see one of these videos...we see how he's still on a totally higher level . WORLD'S apart from the students. That the students in tthesse videos will NEVER come close to where he was in his prime. He was legendary. Fastest kick clocked at over 60 MPH. With one bum knee (Judo injury). His demo of basic boxing punches. You can see that a Karate-ka would NEVER see any of the punches coming the way they are delivered. :) Seemingly "simple" fighting style--boxing. But one of the most effective for full-contact.= body body conditioning. Karate is "exercise". and demonstrations. In a point-fighting match Wallace would still win at his age here. :) He'd be untouchable. Still.

But in light contact he has benen beaten...twice I know of . john towns a los angeles 17 year old beat him as did ernie lieb in Detroit in maybe 67,68. But he was a tough, much better more versatile than joe lewis who had limited techniques. could I beat him...nah

True, Bill lost a few times in point matches, like all the top fighters did too. Another who gave him a hard time in points was Howard Jackson- he was about the only fighter fast enough to blitz Bill as Bill started a kick, sometimes catching him on the 'way in'. But on balance, in his prime, Bill was the top fighter at least 2 years running, I think 72 and 73, and in the top ten point fighters until he went full contact.

We've all heard stories about how professional fights get visited by "bad people" before the fight wanting them to throw the fight or do something in their favour. Since there's always a lot of money riding on the fight..I never knew there was also the TV people and promotors who would ask the fighters to carry the lesser fighter a few rounds. Just to fill time that night. That it's not always the mob. Though, I have to wonder now...in any big fight...millions of $ involved...surly the mob will talk to the fighters to do what THEY want...and then there's also the promotors/TV people?? I guess they'd do as the mob says.."more"...it's not just about going out there and doing your best. :) No "outside influences"...

Watching this one video...you see how the Karate guys would have no chance at all against a kickboxer. They'd never see the punches or expect the kicks. Interesting Wallace admitted Karate isn't designed for fighting. Many Karateka don't know this. So they spend their lives studying naively thinking they're now badasses. There's no substitute for ring experience. No matter what anyone says. To truly know you've learnt what was taught. More so if our goal is "self-defence". The man was undefeated in kickboxing. I'd take his advice on fighting over Bruce Lee (Lee never competed). Wallace was "the best"...Proven and undeniable!! And he was well educated. With 2 college degrees. One being a Master's. One of the few educated fighters. Knew when to get out...with an educated reason.

Depends on what kind of karate you're taking. I don't know how many dojo's spar these days, but I'm glad the one I am in does. And even MMA can't really simulate a real self defense experience, because a lot of moves you can't do in mma.

Of course, he's older, that would be silly to expect someone his age now to still kick that high. Also he said kicks to the head sometimes miss, and he got most of his knockouts by kicks to the ribs. Plus, kicking that high leaves your standing leg wide open.

The problem with traditional karate is twofold. One, it assumes you're fighting another karate-ka who is relatively stationary. That was true in Japan over a hundred years ago but not in today's modern world. Two, it assumes that all your punches and kicks are deadly. What Mixed Martial Arts has shown us is that karate strikes are NOT deadly and can be shaken off by a trained athlete. MMA has also shown us that a little defensive movement can make a karate fighter MISS and be open to counters. But, WORST OF ALL, a karate fighter is about useless if the fight goes to the ground. A more functional and practical martial art than traditional karate would be Muay Thai. At least they incorporate boxing skills into their movements.
@kbanghart
@kbanghart 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with a lot of what you say, but remember, there's different kinds of karate, I mean if you're talking about actual moves in the street, you can't do those in mma. If you're talking pure self-defense karate in the street, someone who knows what they're doing is going to nail you in the larynx or knee or balls or something horrible if you give them a half a second. Other things like the back of the head, can't do that in mma, like elbow to the spine, etc
@kbanghart
@kbanghart 2 жыл бұрын
Also, some good karate dojos out there are teaching ground work. But I think it's important not to always assume that you're going to fight on the ground, because what if your opponent has a buddy? Oops.
