Katie Couric reflects on her middle class upbringing, and how she identified with both her mother's creativity and her father's writing skills. Couric recalls entering the competitive television industry, initially facing criticism, but persisting through practice and self-confidence. Couric emphasizes preparation, active listening, stresses the responsibility of journalists to ask tough questions, hold public officials accountable, and maintain composure during significant events.
Katie Couric is the TV host and journalist who anchored The CBS Evening News from 2006-11. She previously was the host of the NBC morning program The Today Show from 1991 through 2006. Katie Couric worked for CNN and ABC early in her career, also reporting in Miami and Washington, D.C. She joined NBC News in 1989 and the Today show in 1990, becoming permanent co-anchor in 1991. With her perky attitude and no-holds-barred interviewing style, Katie Couric boosted the show’s sagging ratings and became one of morning TV’s most popular personalities. Her husband, Jay Monahan, died in 1998 of colon cancer, and in 1999 Couric co-founded a non-profit organization for cancer research and education. In 2001, Katie Couric signed a new contract to remain with The Today Show through 2006. When that contract ended, she announced to Today Show viewers in 2006 that she would leave the show to become the anchor of The CBS Evening News. Couric made her debut on the evening news broadcast in 2006. After five years, she announced in 2011 that she had decided to step down from the job.
From the 2013 PBS Documentary “Makers: Women Who Make America”, examines how women have helped shape America over the past 150 years, striving for a full and fair share of political power and economic opportunity.

Katie is my favorite reporter, news anchor. She has the empathy, spunk and girl nextdoor quality that makes her so relatable.

What a FANTASTIC interview. Certainly one of the best I've ever seen. It's too bad Katie Couric's current KZfaq Channel is not of this quality. I have always been keenly aware of Katie's talent, having worked with her on a few occasions. I immediately fell in like with her. I recognize the voice, but who is the interviewer? She did an excellent job. I'm surprised I'm only seeing this for the first time now.

I love Katie. She, for me, in the thirty years that she has been bringing me news from far-flung places, has always been the PERFECT blend of humility, dignity, credibility and truth, honesty, accessibility, and charm, elegance, and grace. Many kudos. 🏆

Katie is so different from other reporters in TV. She is still fresh faced, great personality, sharp as anyone and has a relaxing way of relaying information and interviewing guests.

I was watching the Today Show on 9/11 as I was getting ready for work. I was running late. I had an hour commute to work. My colleagues had no clue what was going on. I’m emailed my boss asking her about what was happening and whether I should stay home and she said, “I don’t know what you’re talking about. We have a lot to do today. You need to come in.” I drove in thinking bombs might fall from the sky (I was in the Boston are). But Katie’s coverage gave me the calmness I needed to go in. Because she didn’t panic, I felt safer. She is truly a national treasure.

@@rachelstark2391 I believe it would be her last book, Going There. I didn't read it. I don't intend to, as I have heard that she has slammed too many people, but I did enjoy this interview.
