Perhaps it’s the difference of experience, and age, but definitely, HxH was more comprehensive. (I read the magazines&books in Japanese - so no language barrier there hah.) It’s interesting that Naruto is much more popular overseas. It makes sense though, he did say in an interview, he decided to write about ninja (shinobi) because he wanted to target the non Japanese audience (he knew about the fascination non Japanese people have about ninjas - in some ways more than a Japanese person may have over shinobi). It may be because Japanese people know about how shinobi were real, in sengoku history.

Sasuke is easily the best character in the series not true. Most likely a lot is lost in the translation. Japanese has a lot based on nuance. Just the way (not voice actor but how they sentence the words) Kurapika and Sasuke ‘talks’ you actually kind of get their personality on the get go. Partially, anyway, since the way they talk is so telling of how they act. By the way Kurapika talks, we can see that he is very strict. Sasuke, in the other hand may be more “manly”, and less strict. (I might not be explaining it well enough - but for example, Kurapika could be a person who does kendo and the way Sasuke talks, he sounds more like a teenager. Nothing bad, but it’s he way they talk, and I’m sure both mangaka was considering this when they wrote the characters.) for example, Naruto TALKS childish. I’ve seen 12 year olds who talk more maturely. Honestly, many people lose a lot of nuances over the translation. It’s like if you’re American, how would you explain the southern accent, and the different nuances you get on the intonation in English to a person who doesn’t understand fluent English? Yeah, it’s hard.

In any other show, Kurapika would probably be my favorite character. Hunter x Hunter's cast as a whole is just too strong lol. I love Kurapika and his development so far, but he doesn't even fall into my top 3 within HxH.

Speaking of that, a bulk of this video was written for a Top 10 characters list that I'm working on. It felt more like a disconnected idea rather than a breakdown of Kurapika though, which is why I made it a separate video and expanded on just that comparative aspect of it. I ended up removing him from that list after I thought about it some more, so I was glad to talk about him here. I have another video like this one in the works that also broke away from that top 10. It's almost like I'm TRYING not to finish it, haha.

same here, I watch naruto way before HxH but even then I would get pissed off and say "why is the story about sauske, who actually gives a fuck about him". The entire story revolved around some annoying ass boring character that gave no reason for naruto or sakura to care about him. [KSH] Okay so I hands down think hunterxhunter is the most well written shit to date but Kurapika isn't more developed then someone like sasuke. However, that's only because naruto has a significantly larger number of episodes for said development to take place. Kurapika is only present for 48 episodes out of 148. Either you haven't watched all of naruto and hunterxhunter or you're just confusing developed with well written. Sasuke's development is honestly really good but he isn't very well written. Kurapika has some development but is hands down a more well written character.

Big cap!!! Kuripika is a waaaaaaay better character than sasuke. They have similarities but that’s what makes kuripika better. He’s done better plain and simple. My goal for these Thematic Breakdowns is to keep the information I present as unbiased as possible (save the part where I talked about their powers at the end, as I feel that's the least interesting part of both characters).

The Casual Anime Fan ALL shonen fans that comment are bumbling fanboys. DBZ's fans constantly wear nostalgia goggles, HxH fans rant and rave about how the series is a deconstruction of everything, One Piece fans have an elitist ideology over how the series compares to anime in general, Naruto fans actually understand the flaws but fight with each other over how to fix those problems, MHA fans place the series as the definition of perfect execution of all the clichés, and Bleach fans... have basically committed Jonestown. In other words - FANDOMS ARE CRAP.

As for my opinion (because you'll inevitably ask for it), it appears there IS more HxH bias in the comments - and by bias, I mean they just randomly claim "HxH is better than Naruto" over and over. Simply stating that without any reasons is not an argument, it's fanboying. It's perfectly fine to like one over the other, but disregarding one because you like another is plain elitism. Yes, there are things that HxH does better than Naruto, but what a lot of people here seem to ignore is that vice versa happening is inevitable. If there are things in common between the two, it's fine to compare them, but not shove eternal hatred onto one. We should look at Kurapika and Sasuke, and by extension both series, individually when critiquing them. My main problem with Sasuke, IMO, is that he's in the story too much. His story develops well on its own, but it also becomes the backstory for a lot of Naruto's mythology, and this causes a lot of the supporting characters, as well as Sakura and my man Kakashi, to not have as much development as they otherwise could have, a problem that more applies to Killua than it does Kurapika. Kurapika, meanwhile, hasn't really gone anywhere. He's still chasing the same goal he was at the beginning, and unlike other characters, his motivations haven't evolved. Yes, he's shown to care for his friends, but he doesn't experience the emotional rollercoaster that Sasuke does in regards to them, which I think makes Sasuke have better character development, even if he doesn't have better characterization. It's hinted numerous times in Naruto that, if Sasuke finally finds consolation, he will return to Team 7, something a lot of people seem to neglect. And in the end, let's be honest about something: a lot of HxH fans are part of the demographic that believes watching "popular" anime like the Big Three is Satanic, even though it's becoming popular itself. Liking a show just because it's not as popular as another is not a judgment on the quality of the product at all; it just shows you're a closeted weeb. Mathwiz may like HxH more than Naruto, but he can see merits in Naruto without giving it the finger all the time.

No, I disagree. The reason why Sasuke is a better character is because he's an exploration of what being obsessed with revenge actually does to someone while Kurapika, relatively speaking, is just a stock manga revenger. This vid makes far too much of Kurapika's choice at the end of York New. The point isn't that he chose his friends -it's that he hopped straight back on the revenge train (and yeah, in fairness, that is an exploration of what revenge does to somebody, as is his morphing into a Yakuza during the Ant arc, but it has nothing like the depth of what Sasuke goes through). Also, how can you say that Sasuke isn't conflicted? He repeatedly fails to kill Naruto despite having the opportunity when it would be of tremendous benefit to him. Later he is torn between his anger at the village for what it did to his family and honouring his brother's desire to protect Konoha above all. Given that ultimately Sasuke chooses the latter saying that there's no conflict seems especially crazy. Then after that you have conflict between Sasuke's plan to become a dictator and protect Konoha and the world by isolating himself through sacrificing his own personal feelings and the emotional pull of those ties. Sasuke pushes through with his plan but after the fight with Naruto just the use of the single phrase 'you loser' it should tell you that the pull of his ties to his friends in Team 7 has, belatedly, won out. I find it bizarre that people treat Kishimoto at face value but worship Togashi's every doodle. Kishimoto is genuinely influenced by Togashi (not in the way many people think of ripping off plot elements -that's mostly misguided nonsense) and Naruto is full of psychological depth. Nonetheless, when Togashi defies audience expectations he gets hailed as a genius but when Kishimoto does it he gets accused of being a bad writer. Go figure.

The genius in both mangakas is that they focus on that plot development but while Kishimoto wrote the story focused on Naruto and Sasuke being geniuses(naruto having the tailed beast counts). Togashi had a more spread out kind of. I don't really know how to explain it. Its like they both express their characters in a different psychological way depending on how they intend their stories to bend. Sasuke, for example, wants to beat Itachi and take revenge. While it may seem stupid and straightforward like naruto's goal to be hokage, he develops his inferiority complex because he wants to get stronger and somehow this boy the same age as him is already way stronger. Kurapika on the other hand, is more hands-off and calculated. I'm not saying he's better but in terms of what he mentally went through when planning his revenge plit out is still a mystery(unless you read the manga, the manga goes in depth) sasuke had mkre than 500 episodes to reveal to us exactly how he is, how op he is, and how he developed as a perskn with mixed feelings and goals. Kurapika for all we knew was just a badass we wanted to cheer for but that didn't make his goal any clearer or right. Both stories include a lot of though and even the slightest change in a factor could change the stpry of their lives comepletely.

That, until Itachi kills the entire Uchiha clans and shatters Sasuke's image of him and kickstart his revenge quest. With that said, Itachi himself kills the entire Uchiha clans because of their plan for coup, with hope to bring peace upon Konoha, even if he needs to gets his hand dirty. And that's why Itachi needs Sasuke to kill him. To sort of "sealed the terrible history" of the clans. And YES, hoping that by venging his family and kills him, Sasuke will be at peace. And remember, this whole thing were told by Tobi directly to Sasuke after he killed Itachi. You would think that after hearing that, Sasuke will return to Konoha and accept his fate as a fugitive for the sake of his unfortunate brother's wish to keep Konoha in peace ???? NOPE !!!! He goes around throwing tantrum and be like "he forced my brother !!!!" And tries to kills all Kages out of spite and hatred. And even further causing mayhem because of it. This act alone has proven that Sasuke was written in such an incredible inconsistency that almost baffling. I used to hate Sasuke, but I realized that what I hated about him was his powers rather than his character arc as a whole. That applies to most of Naruto, actually. The characters and ideas are generally good, but the execution is where everything falls apart for me.

So OP that he had to be killed by deus ex machine (aka rose bomb) which had no built up at all. Then there was Gon's sudden power up against Pitou which was explained after but it just shows how poorly nen system is designed

I'll agree to disagree with you on the Death Note guy -- because he's good -- but not on your examples, or that nen is poorly designed. Madara was too OP to be killed because Kishimoto wrote himself into a corner (which he admitted). Meruem was too OP to be killed in an honest fight in service of thematic elements. There were no mechanics forcing Togashi's hand to make Netero vs. Meruem end the way it did, because we hadn't seen either character in a serious fight. The Rose Bomb wasn't foreshadowed in name or specifics, but something *on the level* of the Rose Bomb was the logical bitter culmination of the arc's major theme: Human or Ant, you can be a monster. The humans had to level something against Meruem -- a man down to eat children and commit genocide -- that spoke SO poorly of humanity's character that it could look the audience in the face and still say that humans could be Just As Bad. That's why the story demanded that Meruem be so OP. Meanwhile, Gon's sudden power up... I've actually written a small essay before that breaks down the way that was a carefully-set-up deconstruction of the "shounen protagonist gets big powerup from righteous fury" cliche. It's too long for a KZfaq comment, but the setup started with making us sympathetic to Komugi, so that, when Gon hates hypocrisy more than he cares about her life, the audience is invited and encouraged to emotionally disengage from Gon as a protagonist and instead identify with Killua's feelings as a bystander who loves Gon but is helpless to talk him out of this, ultimately building up to a hollow, unsatisfying victory against an enemy who's already dead, the exact opposite emotional outcome from what usually happens when this trope appears. The narrator is hand-holdy during this, but the narrator is hand-holdy through the entire last half of the Chimera Ant arc because of the clusterfuck of simultaneous scenes -- which I admit is a flaw -- but anyone who has internalized the Magic A Is Magic A and isn't lost by this point is going to know before the narrator says anything that there are going to be Terrible Consequences for whatever the fuck Gon just did, and there are. Alluka ends up offsetting some of those Terrible Consequences, but it took an entire arc to do, Alluka herself was foreshadowed, and it properly introduces that shit from the "Dark Continent" (I hate that name) -- where this strain of Chimera Ants is also implied to have come from -- can sometimes bend the power limitations, which opens interesting doors for the origins of Emperor Time and what's up with Chrollo (my money is on "bodysnatched an 11-year-old boy in Meteor City via haunted video tape, because in order to understand the humans you have to become the humans").

Rising Wind lol firstly watch HxH till the final episode then talk about what is better. Personally I think Hunter Exam and Heaven Arena is just boring af compared to Land of Waves and Chunin Exam. Yeah, Sasuke was also constantly morally conflicted throughout the series. Initially he was introduced as being very single-minded towards vengeance, but after the first few arcs he gained a deep appreciation for friendship, similar to Kurapika. The only difference in this respect was that Sasuke's appreciation for friendship wasn't as great as his desire for hatred, prompting him to leave his friends until the latter parts of the War Arc at the end of Shippuden, when he was won back over by Naruto. Kurapika, on the other hand, never let go of his friendships. Sasuke definitely wasn't as morally single-minded as the video makes him out to be.

Yeah you're right, you could see sasuke calming down a little and actually becoming a part of team 7, but when Itachi came and didn't even acknowledge him and only seemed to focus on Naruto. That was the turning point. I don't think gon, killua or even kurapika could be compared to sasuke. There's just alot of inner conflict he had to deal with that I don't think any of those characters had too. I mean sure it's fucked up that kurapika's family/clan got killed be the troupe, but imagine if they got killed by his own brother who then forced him into an illusion where he had to repeatedly witness his families death over and over.

Aj Reyes well sasuke was... a child. He’s only 16 when itachi dies and he gets into it with danzo etc. and he’s 17 by the end. Where as kurapika is 19 from the start of the show. One is pretty much an adult and the other we see in his angsty teenage years...

Honestly, I think Naruto is worth watching. Yeah, it has its fair share of problems, but there are definitely weaker shows out there. Now that I've read it, I'd personally recommend the manga over the anime to save yourself some time (the anime has really slow pacing even without the filler), but I also understand how watching anime can be more appealing than reading manga, so do what you will lol.

Honestly i feel like its not worth it, i started watching it like 2 years ago and I still have like 200 more episodes, I just find I'm not really enjoying it now and its more of a chore to watch it. Read/watch enough through skipping around the series until you have a solid understanding of the characters, their traits, and the Naruto universe, pick a favorite character (or a character you think was pretty shitty but had potential to be well-written) and go find some quality fanfiction. Naruto has the most (and best imo) fanfiction for a reason. The series did a lot of things pretty badly, but it was solid enough that authors can build on it well, and it appeals to many age groups so it’s not hard to find stories written by actual adults who take the time to analyze and storybuild before writing something that’s actually really good. Or just read the manga if fanfiction isn’t ur thing.

And lastly, 3. saying something is better or worse isn't a subjective claim, but an objective one and if you don't want to make a fool out of yourself you'll back that claim up with facts, explanations and examples, because you're talking directly about the show itself and its quality. However if you say "I *like* naruto more than hxh" or "I prefer naruto over hxh" that is a subjective claim because you aren't talking about the show itself but your feelings about the show. This claim can also be backed up with examples and reasonings but since this is a subjective claim that is far less important than when making an objective claim.

The only people i see defending Sasuke are little kids with Naruto in their Avatar. I like Naruto(mostly because of Obito and Madara) but Kurapika is a better charecter than Sasuke in every single way. Sasuke started off as a great character in Naruto and they completely ruined him by the end. They made him so unlikable it's like they were trying to make you hate his character on purpose.

Just take a look at Naruto. Now, contrary to popular opinion, I think post-timeskip Naruto wasn't that weak. He just looked weak compared to Sasuke's exponential growth. The guy had a mission, and no one was going to get in the way of him achieving his mission. And if achieving his mission meant having to abandon his friends, then so be it. I for one couldn't be able to, but that just proves how immense Sasuke's determination is. And that alone is admirable. The guy went on a complete rampage. And understandably so. Finding out the place you've called home for so long actually used your brother as the instrument for your own family's demise can really take its toll on you. So as opposed of following the common shonen troupe of turning bad guys into good guys: Sasuke went the opposite direction: from protagonist to antagonist to temporary villain. I figured people would like that change up. I just don't know how you can hate this guy. He went from living only for the singular purpose of killing his brother, to experiencing what its like to become a victim of the shinobi world and now has vowed to 'destroy' it, and from the ashes, he will create a new world system.
