I recently visited Japan and I bought Japanese watercolours (gansai)! This video is a brand comparison between the Kissho and the Kuretake brands.
Note: Gansai uses a different binder to traditional watercolours - traditional watercolours generally use gum arabic as the binder (plant based), Gansai uses a combination of products which could include beeswax, starch, sugar syrup, glycerine, etc.
I forgot to mention that two of my Kuretake paints had cracked by the time I opened them - they were easily sealed together again with water, the Kissho however did not crack at all.
Materials:
Kissho Gansai
Kuretake Gansai Tambi
Winsor & Newton 200gsm watercolour visual diary
Moleskine Sketchbook
Winsor & Newton Artists watercolour sable brush - pointed round 4

You need to look up what Gansai is. They are Japanese traditional watercolor they are different then western watercolor. I'm no expert but they are made differently which make them glossy and opaque. They are hard to layer because they don't soak into the paper (like western watercolor). They sit on top of the paper. They are used mostly on paper that is like washi paper and the colors muddy easily because they are not really meant to be mixed. They are beautiful colors and they don't have to be used the traditional ways or on special paper but it is helpful to know this stuff so you don't get frustrated trying to get to do something they are not design to do.

EchoShadowKid thanks for your comment. I did already read that they were made differently to traditional western watercolours, but I didn’t know the absorbency was different (causing them to lift). I’m happy to experiment with products so the muddying wasn’t a huge problem for me - just a surprise, and something I think people should be aware of if they are thinking of purchasing them to use as a “normal” watercolour, hence why I shared my experience. Thanks for the tips though, I’ll definitely have to try them on washi paper!

@@jessicahanimator, More than this, I hope this could be usefull for you: this watercolors are made to be used not in the watercolor paper from the West, this paints are supposed to be used in rice paper, which is very thin and light. The absorbency from this paper is different too according to it's treatments. Look out for xuan paper and try again with some sumi-e tecninc with chineses brushes and ink from a stick. It's not necesary to use them only with this tecnic, as Echo Shadow said alredy, but as he says too, it's usefull to understand their real quality along the requirements they were meant to cover.

@@jessicahanimator, specifically, you can try with the shu paper, or mature one, which actually has less absorbency than the raw or the middle one, specially useful to Gong-Bi style.

Thank you for sharing this comparison! I have the full set of the Kuretake, which I consider more traditional colors, but am very interested to add the Kissho to my supplies. I LOVE the size of the pans, and the fact that a few can taken out at a time and placed on the desk or in another box. It was very helpful to know that the pan sizes are the same between brands. When a pan is empty it would be fantastic to fill it with a favorite traditional watercolor if desired. I don't know how to access single color replacements here in the US. Again, thank you for doing this review.

I've tried the kissho one, and it's really hard to control the paint.. It makes a really sharp edges, so i need to do extra effort to make the edges disappear ...
